The Evans Family Puts on Airs

May Parker was a million times unwilling to go to Lily Evans's house, but with the elders at home giving orders, she had no choice but to sulkily prepare to leave.

Even though she didn't want to go, May still dressed up carefully. She refused to let herself look shabby in front of Lily Evans—if she was going to be compared, she had to make sure she came out on top.

May rummaged through her wardrobe, picked out her best outfit, and even put on the jewelry she usually couldn't bear to wear. After primping meticulously, she finally set out.

Just thinking about going to Lily Evans's house made the Evans family pull long faces, but every single one of them made sure to dress up. As a group, they looked like a bunch of overdressed clowns.

Helen Parker saw how pretty May looked and couldn't help feeling proud, so she took her daughter's arm and deliberately glanced at Susan Evans's daughter, Lana Evans.

Lana Evans was only ten, a skinny little girl with dark skin—nothing like May, who was tall and fair.

"Just look at my May—so fair and delicate, clearly born to be a young mistress. Unlike some people, who are dark, short, and ugly—obviously born to be a maid!" Helen Parker openly and secretly insulted Lana Evans.

Susan Evans immediately shot back, "Think being fair makes you a young mistress? The pigs in the pen are even fairer—maybe they're all destined to be queens!"

The moment the two sisters-in-law met, they started bickering. Grandma Evans snapped, "Enough! When we go out today, watch your mouths—don't embarrass our family!"

With almost the whole Evans family gathered, there was just one person missing: Samuel Evans.
