I saw a zombie with slightly purplish skin and a stiff body, slowly hopping behind a tree. It wore a tattered white shirt and a pair of pants that had already rotted away, exposing a thigh that was entirely purple. Its sharp teeth were bared, but it just kept hopping in place, never coming closer.
The zombie was still thirty or forty meters away from me, like a wild beast eyeing its prey. At this moment, I had completely reverted to my human form.
"I’d better leave. If I stay here, none of them dare come over. Ethan Zhang, once you’re done, I’ll come back."
Lance Quinn finished speaking and vanished in an instant. Just then, the Purple Revenant suddenly leapt toward me at incredible speed.
As black-green corpse energy spilled out across the ground, the Purple Revenant was almost upon me. This was my first time facing a zombie, and since it was the lowest rank, I had nothing to fear.
The moment the bloodsucking Purple Revenant lunged at me, I saw its long, black nails and hands covered in corpse spots reaching for me. I dodged quickly, my right hand condensing Deathbane Aura into a sword, and slashed fiercely at its head.
With a swift motion, the Purple Revenant’s entire head flew high into the air, but its body kept moving, sweeping its arms toward me. I was caught off guard and, with a dull thud, was knocked to the ground.
"Ethan, be careful."
Rachel called out from above, startled by what was happening. I rubbed my numb arm—it hurt, like being struck by an iron rod.
I quickly realized the zombie was hopping toward me again. I’d chopped off its head, but its body could still move. The severed head had landed far away, its eyes wide and white like a lightbulb, mouth still smacking and moving. Somehow, the head seemed to be drawn by a mysterious force, slowly inching back toward the body.
I roared, Deathbane Aura surging from my body. Facing such a low-level zombie and making a fool of myself made me furious. I shot up into the air, leaving the Purple Revenant still bouncing below.
In an instant, I dove toward its still-moving body, wielding the Deathbane Twin Blades, slashing down again and again. Under my fierce assault, the Purple Revenant’s body was quickly chopped into several pieces—its arms and legs severed.
Strangely, even the zombie’s severed limbs kept twitching. I squatted in front of the pile of purple-black corpse fragments and checked them briefly. There was no sign of anything crimson, which made sense—low-level zombies like these couldn’t possibly have corpse jade.
I decided to keep waiting patiently.
Soon, I noticed many shadows moving in the forest—some hopping, some slow-moving. A whole crowd of Purple Revenants and White Revenants appeared. I recognized them instantly, but with so many zombies, I didn’t bother fighting. Instead, I spread my wings and took to the air.
Then I noticed something interesting: most of the zombies here wore modern clothes, while ancient ones were rare. After a moment, I laughed, watching the Purple Revenants on the ground, heads lifted, as if they’d noticed me but couldn’t reach me, just hopping in place.
The slow-moving White Revenants stretched their stiff necks to look up at me. I ignored them and hovered above, drifting toward the floating house and entering the room.
At that moment, William Wu, the chubby guy, woke up. Rachel was leaning on the bed. The fat man seemed to see something unbelievable and nearly fell over the edge, so I grabbed him quickly.
"No photos. Behave yourself. If any of this gets out, it’ll be a huge problem." I stopped William Wu from using his camera again.
"I understand, officer. Rachel already told me about the Ghost Burial Squad. I’ve decided—I’m definitely joining the Ghost Burial Squad. So I’m taking some photos to bring back for them."
I smiled and nodded. Back during the Helen Chen incident, that teacher named Xue Ming also joined the Ghost Burial Squad. I’d heard Hu Tianshu mention it before—he was older, so he could only do odd jobs for the squad, but he was happy about it.
A groan came from behind me. I hurried over to see Rachel drenched in sweat, while William Wu, though excited, collapsed after only a few photos. His camera clattered to the ground. Rachel looked terrible—she was barely holding on.
"I’m fine, Ethan. I can hold on."
I shook my head. I could tell Rachel was just forcing herself. Over these past few days, my impression of her had completely changed. I used to think she was just a playful girl, but now I realized she was actually a really good person.
At that moment, I remembered my blood. I wasn’t sure if it would help, but I quickly cut my skin a little and had Rachel open her mouth. I let my blood drip into her mouth.
Immediately, Rachel cried out in surprise. I saw the black patches on her body start to fade away bit by bit—the effect was obvious.
I quickly had William Wu drink my blood too. Sure enough, after a while, both of them looked relieved—their weakness was gone. They started eating, devouring the food hungrily. That’s when I noticed there was food in the corner of the room.
I sat down with them and ate too.
After we’d eaten our fill, I saw the two of them had recovered their spirits. I breathed a sigh of relief. Just then, I heard a noise from the first floor—a sudden loud bang.
The three of us were stunned. William Wu was the first to head downstairs.

"The zombies are coming up."
William Wu shouted. I rushed downstairs, surprised, and saw William Wu’s legs trembling as he collapsed, staring in shock as a Purple Revenant hopped up through a hole in the floor.
Reacting quickly, I didn’t use the Deathbane Aura Blade this time. Instead, I clenched my fist and smashed it into the Purple Revenant’s head. With a bang, it crashed through the wooden house and fell down. But just then, three more Purple Revenants jumped up through the hole.
I grabbed William Wu and pushed him aside. Instantly, the three fast-moving Purple Revenants thrust their hands at my chest. Not daring to be careless, I transformed into mist with a snap.
Cold sweat broke out on me. Thirty or forty meters below, the ground was packed with zombies. They were stacked like acrobats—the White Revenants seemed drawn to the blood-soaked towel, while the Purple Revenants acted as stepping stones, letting others climb up layer by layer.
I instantly conjured three strands of Deathbane Aura, like ropes, looping them around the three Purple Revenants that had climbed up. With a bang, I hurled them against the wall, knocking them out. But more Purple Revenants were still jumping up in layers below.
A swarm of Purple Revenants was about to climb up. The ones acting as stepping stones didn’t move, seeming to willingly let others use them. I started to panic.
Suddenly, Deathbane Aura surged around me. I kept gathering it around my body—the only way now was to blast through these zombies.
Seven or eight Purple Revenants were already in position, about to jump up. I couldn’t wait any longer. With a crash, I smashed through the floorboards, my wings flaring powerfully behind me. With a thunderous bang, I dove into the pile of zombies.
Instantly, the zombies I crashed into scattered, tumbling in all directions. But the impact wasn’t enough—those zombies, even after falling, were fine. There were still ten meters between them and the house above.
With a thought, I spread my arms. Suddenly, black arrows appeared in the sky behind me. I poured much more power into these arrows than usual—these weren’t ordinary Deathbane Aura arrows. They had to be lethal, even though these were just the lowest-level Purple Revenants.
Their skin was tough—I’d noticed that when I chopped off the Purple Revenant’s head earlier.
I roared, and a rain of black arrows poured from the sky, showering the zombie horde below.
Instantly, the arrows riddled the zombies with holes, and the stacked zombie tower began to tilt and collapse.
I breathed a sigh of relief.
"Ethan, be careful."
Just as I let my guard down, I sensed something behind me.
With a rip, I saw a crimson, hairy hand reach through my chest.
With a snap, I transformed into a ghost. Then I saw, behind me, a zombie with crimson hair, its body covered in red fur, baring sharp teeth and staring at me with blood-red eyes.
It was a Flying Revenant—I realized it immediately. Its features resembled Shadow’s, and its body was very stiff, but it could fly through the air. Its speed was terrifying, able to approach me without a sound.
I didn’t dare let my guard down. I turned completely into mist, but the Flying Revenant suddenly shot up toward the house.
"Damn."
I shouted, instantly reforming into human shape and blocking the Flying Revenant. Its hands clamped around my neck, mouth wide open, lunging to bite me. I couldn’t shift into ghost form, panic rising as I roared.
