The Beginning of War Part 4

Beneath a sky tinged with black-green, billowing smoke and deafening cries of battle filled the air. The clash of weapons was relentless. I watched the scene below in silence: the forces of the Underworld Court had formed a massive concave formation, blocking the enemy advancing across bridges that regenerated no matter how many times they were cut down.

The enemy’s actions amounted to nothing but suicide. Again and again, high-ranking ghost generals at the front wielded their weapons, unleashing powerful ghost aura to strike the foes on the bridge, sending them plunging below.

Watching the war below was witnessing a one-sided massacre. From the fortress where I stood, giant incendiaries were constantly hurled from the lower tiers, bursting among the enemy ranks and instantly reducing many to ash.

Originally, in such a one-sided slaughter, the enemy stood no chance. Yet I still saw some slip through, crossing the bridge and engaging the Underworld Court soldiers directly. Though none of the ghosts wore proper armor, their sheer numbers allowed them to steadily erode the Underworld Court’s forces.

Only the skeletons from Yuna Ji’s Infernal Hell could fight these endlessly regenerating ghosts. But it was clear the skeletons were far fewer than the enemy. In the distance, I could see ghosts pouring out of some cities, converging at the edge of the chasm and launching a direct assault.

With a sudden rush of green light, Perry Min appeared beside Lord Shenyan. His ghost aura was weak, and he collapsed onto the platform, exhausted.

"It’ll take at least several hours to recover. Looks like we won’t be able to hold this position."

Lord Shenyan’s face was grave as he watched the chaos below. No matter how strong the Blue Wraiths and Ghost Sovereigns were, their strength would eventually wane. Against these ghosts—who could never truly be killed—the slaughter could wipe out swathes for a time, but soon more would surge forward to take their place.

"Can’t we just go straight to the enemy’s stronghold and destroy their source?"

I asked, and Tan Tian burst into laughter.
