Husband, Am I Useful Now
Perhaps it was because Lily’s aura exploded so suddenly and fiercely, or maybe because she’d always seemed gentle and timid, but the stark contrast left the entire village stunned.
Margaret sat inside the house, watching her daughter and son-in-law stand protectively in front of her. She covered her mouth, tears streaming down her face. She’d always thought she was destined to be bullied her whole life, and only endured for Lily’s sake—to raise her well and see her married off. That would be enough for her.
But now, seeing her grown daughter stand up for her like this, Margaret felt an endless joy and pride welling up inside. Unconsciously, she straightened her back.
With her daughter and son-in-law backing her up, she no longer needed to live in fear in the village. She could finally hold her head high and live with dignity, never again forced to endure humiliation!
Lucky stood nearby, utterly awestruck. His eyes sparkled with admiration as he gazed at Lily, his whole face practically shouting: My wife is amazing! My wife is so smart! My wife is fierce and unstoppable!
Even Cynthia Wu was taken aback by Lily’s presence, her eyes filled with admiration. How did Lily become so commanding?
Arthur Evans, the treasured son of Helen Parker and Grandma Evans, was completely subdued by Lily and didn’t dare act tough anymore. Seeing her intimidation had worked, and not wishing to escalate things, Lily let Arthur go.
"Remember what I said." Lily shot the Evans family a cold, sweeping glance.
"Oh, Arthur, my precious Arthur!" Helen Parker rushed over to help Arthur up from the ground.
Arthur’s face was pale with fear, trembling and unable to speak. Supported by Helen Parker and Grandma Evans, he hurried home.
With the excitement over, most of the villagers dispersed. The village chief, however, stayed behind. Lily had expected him to scold her for stirring up trouble, but instead, he sighed and looked at her family with deep sympathy. Shaking his head, he said, "Sigh, having relatives like that must be tough for you..."
Lily couldn’t help but smile. So even the village chief couldn’t stand the Evans family’s behavior. It seemed he was strict on the outside, but fair on the inside—he knew exactly what kind of people lived in the village.
After a few comforting words to Margaret, the village chief left with his son, Alan.
Dr. Wu gave Margaret’s injuries a quick look. As a man, he felt it was inappropriate to apply the medicine himself, so he asked his daughter Cynthia Wu to help.
Margaret clung to Lily’s hand, tears mixing with laughter.
As Cynthia Wu applied the ointment, she said, "Lily, you were so impressive today! You even scared me! Look at the Evans family, so tough at first, but when you put that hairpin to Arthur’s face, I swear those two nearly wet themselves!"
Now that things had calmed down, Lily relaxed, playfully sticking out her tongue. She pointed at Lucky and said, "It’s all thanks to my husband holding down the fort. Otherwise, us two weak women wouldn’t have stood a chance!"
Lily’s use of the word "husband" made Lucky’s heart swell with joy. His face flushed with happiness as he puffed out his chest, gripping Lily’s hand tightly. "Wife, am I useful or what!?"
"Yes, yes, yes! My husband is super useful! If Lucky hadn’t been here today, the Evans family would’ve torn us apart! And don’t forget, you even managed to hold Arthur back and threaten them!" Lily praised Lucky again and again.
Dr. Wu chuckled and nodded. "That’s right, every household needs a man. Without a strong laborer at home, when people come to bully you, even the fiercest words can’t stop a punch. Cynthia, when will your father find you a good husband? Only then will I be at ease!"
Cynthia Wu blushed. "Why drag me into this? Weren’t we talking about Lucky?"
"Isn’t that the truth!" Margaret, oblivious to the father and daughter’s expressions, chimed in with a laugh. "Thank goodness for Lucky! Just look at how strong he is—anyone thinking of bullying Lily and me better think twice about facing his fists!"
