Late Night Conversation with Mom

1/4/2026

"Mom, what exactly is going on?" Cecilia couldn't help but ask.

Helen Gu finished tidying up the bedding and had Cecilia lie down on the bed to make her more comfortable.

Seeing how attentive and caring her mother was, Cecilia felt her heart warm.

So what if everyone else in the Gu family was cold and heartless? At least her mom loved her the most!

Aside from being a bit timid and always trying to please others only to be taken advantage of, her mom truly did everything she could for her.

Cecilia obediently lay down, a pillow tucked under her waist, and felt most of her exhaustion from the day melt away.

Helen sat beside Cecilia, massaging her legs as she spoke: "Pregnancy causes swelling, so let me help you. Don’t worry, Cecilia, I’ve been reading up on childcare these past few days. I may not have been lucky enough to have a child of my own, but I’ll take good care of you and your baby!"

Hearing her mother's comforting words, Cecilia's eyes grew moist.

"Mom, you should rest too. Let’s just talk like this for a while." Cecilia held her mother’s hand, inviting her to lie down beside her and continue their conversation. "Why doesn’t Dad have the ability to have children anymore?"

"When you were four, your father had an accident. I’m not sure if you remember, but after that incident, he had major surgery that cost our family four hundred thousand yuan. That’s why your uncle and aunt have been holding it over us for the past twenty years." Helen sighed. "Your father and I were married for years without a child. Of course I had my suspicions, especially since your grandmother kept pressuring me for a grandchild. So I got checked out, and I was perfectly healthy. But your grandmother refused to believe it—she insisted I’d bribed the doctor and faked the medical records."

Cecilia listened intently.

Helen looked helpless. "During that surgery, the doctor also checked his sperm viability. The result was: congenital dead and weak sperm, infertile. If your father knew, he would’ve been devastated. Plus, he was facing another major operation at the time. I was afraid he couldn’t handle the news, so I asked the doctor to keep it secret. Afterward, we were busy with his recovery and never brought it up again. So many years have passed, and now that we’re older, having children isn’t so important. I’m just grateful to have you as my daughter!"

Cecilia suddenly sat up straight!

So this was the truth!

Her mom had been blamed for infertility for over twenty years, while her dad—the one who couldn’t have kids—had kept it a secret and still wanted another child!

Hmph, looks like Mom’s the only one who’s truly let go of having kids. Dad never gave up on the idea!

It was all just too ironic!

The one who could have children was cursed for over twenty years, while the one who couldn’t kept messing around...

Maybe this is karma, huh?

Helen saw Cecilia’s face shifting between emotions and thought she was worried about her father’s health. She quickly smiled and said, "Don’t worry, it’s just that he can’t have kids! It’s really not a big deal. We still have you, my sweet daughter!"

Cecilia turned to look at her mother’s face.

Years of hard work and housework had aged her once beautiful features before their time.

Seeing how all her mother’s sacrifices only led to betrayal, Cecilia’s heart ached.

"Mom, look, you’ve gotten old!" Cecilia traced her mother’s eyebrows and eyes with a loving touch. "Since we’re full and have nothing else to do, come on, let me take you for a beauty treatment!"

"Oh, I’m too old for that! It’s embarrassing! I don’t want to go, really!" Helen blushed. "I’d just embarrass myself!"

Cecilia immediately pretended to be upset. "Mom! You can’t talk like that. You’re not old at all—you just worry too much about this family! Besides, when the baby’s born, won’t they ask me why their grandma looks so old? What am I supposed to tell them?"

As expected, Helen fell silent.

Seeing her mother’s expression soften, Cecilia quickly put her hands on her shoulders. "Mom, a woman should treat herself well! If you dress up and look pretty, Dad will like it too, right?"

Sure enough, when Cecilia mentioned Dad, Helen nodded without hesitation.

Cecilia sighed inwardly: Mom, if you ever find out Dad betrayed you long ago, what will you do?

Cecilia packed up and, without giving her mother a chance to refuse, dragged her out.

She was determined to treat her mother well and make up for everything her mom had lost.

With that conviction in her heart, Cecilia took her mother straight to the biggest beauty center in town.

Charles Yin stood by the window, his gaze falling on Cecilia and Helen.

He didn’t know what Cecilia was up to, but whatever she did, he would support her all the way.

There was a knock at the door. Little A tiptoed in: "Sir, Madam went with Mrs. Gu to the beauty center."

"Got it." Charles lowered his eyes, the moonlight casting a hazy, almost seductive glow over his stunning features.

Little A glanced up at Charles, then quickly looked down.

The CEO’s looks were just too overpowering. It wasn’t just women—even men found his appearance hard to ignore.

He’d always known how breathtaking he looked, which was why he hated people staring at his face.

Of course, that used to be the rule.

But now, it seemed that rule had been broken—and the one who broke it was none other than the CEO’s wife!

"Follow her and protect her carefully." Charles lightly tapped the glass with his fingers. "No matter what she does tonight, let her vent."

"Yes, sir." Little A bowed and left immediately.

Just as Little A opened the door to leave, someone approached and whispered something in his ear.

Little A quickly looked up at Charles.

"What is it?" Charles raised his brows, his gaze instantly sweeping toward Little A.

Little A respectfully replied, "Sir, Jenny Gu... seems to be looking for you everywhere..."

Jenny Gu?

A mocking smile curled at the corner of Charles’s lips, and he waved Little A away.

Little A and the others quickly left the doorway.

The Gu family really were all the same!

Charles turned to change his clothes, planning to spend some time at the bar.

With Cecilia gone, he suddenly felt at a loss for what to do...

Cecilia, excited, dragged her mother to the beauty center with the driver.

As soon as they got out of the car, a crowd gathered around, introducing all kinds of services.

Cecilia was used to this scene and pointed at a brochure, telling a beauty manager, "We’ll take this package. Make my mom look gorgeous!"

"But this package is..." The manager glanced at Helen, who looked rather shabby. The package wasn’t cheap at all!

For comfort, Cecilia wore simple clothes today—not a big-name brand, but truly custom-made, so there was no logo on her outfit.

Cecilia hadn’t expected that her simple outfit would make them look down on her.

Not wanting her mom to suffer any slight, Cecilia took out her wallet. "Can I pay by card?"

The manager’s eyes instantly lit up at the sight of Cecilia’s wallet.

It was the latest Hermès!

The manager immediately smiled warmly. "Oh, what a slip of the tongue! Please don’t mind me. I’ll arrange for our most experienced beautician to serve you!"

Of course Cecilia knew they were judging by appearances.

She just smiled and said, "Alright, take my mom in. I’ll just wait outside for a bit."

"Why don’t you get a beauty treatment and relax too?" The manager tried hard to sell more services.

"No thanks, I have a private beautician, and I don’t use outside products." Cecilia smiled politely. "I’m pregnant, so I only use my own company’s products."

The manager’s mouth dropped open, completely at a loss for words!

A private beautician!

Her own company’s beauty products!

Absolutely top-tier!

Cecilia turned and picked up a book, ready to pass the time nearby.

Originally, one of the beauticians wasn’t convinced and wanted to keep selling more, but the manager quickly dragged the clueless beautician into the next room.

"Manager, why did you drag me away?" the young beautician whispered. "That client looks loaded! Sell as much as we can, right?"

"Are you blind? Didn’t you see her wallet? The hand cream inside was a real top brand." The manager glared. "Selling is good, but you have to know who you’re selling to! She’s definitely someone important!"

The young beautician finally shut up.

It was Helen’s first time at a beauty center, and to her, it was dazzlingly luxurious!

So Helen felt a bit awkward, lying stiffly on the beauty bed, not knowing where to put her hands and feet.

If Cecilia hadn’t picked the most expensive package and paid up front, the beauticians would have thought they were just here to try and skip out on the bill!

To help Helen relax, the beautician started chatting. "Was that your daughter just now? She’s really beautiful!"

Hearing someone praise her daughter, Helen was happier than with any compliment. She smiled and replied, "Yes, my daughter is wonderful!"

"Your daughter looks pretty well-off. What does she do?" the beautician asked curiously.

Spending three thousand yuan on beauty care in a snap—she was definitely no ordinary person!

"She... she works for Yin Enterprises," Helen replied, staying clear-headed despite the flattery. She wasn’t about to reveal her son-in-law’s true identity!

Even so, the beautician was amazed. "Wow, she works for Yin Enterprises! No wonder! People who work there are all rich!"
