Someone Is About to Have Bad Luck

Governor Yale was so furious that he didn’t even notice someone lurking on his own rooftop.

Sean Hayes, General Alexander Hayes’s top martial expert, was crouched on the roof, eavesdropping. When he overheard Governor Yale plotting to throw Lily Evans in jail, he frowned.

But that frown wasn’t for Lily Evans—it was for Governor Yale himself.

"Tsk, trying to arrest my Lady Evans? I’ll enjoy watching you get what’s coming to you!" With a flicker, Sean Hayes disappeared into the evening shadows.

May Parker was practically skipping home, delighted that Governor Yale would arrest Lily Evans at dawn. As soon as she entered, Grandma Evans and Helen Parker rushed over, peppering her with anxious questions: "May, what did Governor Yale say? Did he take that wretch Lily Evans to jail?"

May Parker burst out laughing, her voice dripping with smugness. "Governor Yale said he’ll arrest Lily Evans tomorrow and punish her hard! I’ll make sure he ruins her family and has her flogged eighty times before chopping off her head! Hmph, Lily thinks she’s special because she made a little money. Once she’s in my godfather’s hands, she’s done for—crushing her will be easier than squashing an ant!"

Grandma Evans clasped her hands together, her wrinkled face lighting up with glee: "Heaven’s finally opened its eyes! That shameless Lily Evans is finally getting what she deserves! And when Lily’s dead, I’ll deal with that wretch Margaret Evans next!"

Helen Parker jumped in, "Exactly! Margaret Evans acts like she’s so important. Once she’s in our hands, we’ll make her pay!"

Just then, Lila Green waddled in, heavily pregnant. “And those two maids, Belle and April! They think they’ve climbed high and forgotten their old mistress—just wait, I’ll teach them a lesson!”

Grandma Evans tugged on May Parker’s sleeve, eyes twinkling with calculation: "May, you really do have a clever mind. When are you going to find a way to deal with Arthur Evans, that good-for-nothing?"

Just mentioning Arthur Evans made Grandma Evans grind her teeth in hatred. He was a rich merchant but insisted on pretending to be poor and coming home. Grandma Evans couldn’t wait to wipe out Arthur’s whole family and snatch their fortune.

May Parker couldn’t hide her excitement: "Grandma, Governor Yale is especially fond of me now. Just let me whisper in his ear a little more, and soon, they’ll all be finished!"

At Evans Manor, Arthur Evans’s informant rushed back, reporting that Governor Yale had already checked the land and found no connection to the Huainan Prince. He was planning to arrest someone early the next morning.

Arthur Evans paced anxiously, sending people to check if Steward Yuan had returned with Li Yanhao’s letter, but learned it wouldn’t arrive in Green Seedling City until tomorrow afternoon at the earliest.

"Tomorrow afternoon isn’t too late. Once the letter arrives, we’ll be fine. Lily, don’t be afraid. Uncle Arthur will pull some strings, spend whatever it takes to buy time—there’s no way we’ll let them take you!" Arthur Evans grabbed a fat stack of silver notes and dashed out into the night.

Margaret Evans was still blissfully unaware. Lily Evans, not wanting her mother to worry, kept her in the dark and told Belle to help her settle in for the night early.

Belle quietly led Margaret Evans to bed, then returned to Lily Evans’s side. "Miss, everything’s settled. Mistress is resting," she whispered.

April, the youngest maid, clung to Lily Evans’s sleeve, wide-eyed and trembling: "Miss, will the Governor really come arrest you tomorrow?"

Lily Evans smiled, her voice gentle and reassuring: "Don’t worry, April. Everything will be fine."

Lucky, her devoted husband, stepped forward, his eyes blazing with determination: "If anyone dares lay a finger on my Lily, they’ll have to go through me first!"

Lily Evans turned to Lucky, her smile both grateful and teasing: "All right, hero, let’s see what you’ve got!"
