Brothers Are Like Limbs, Women Are Like Clothes (2)

Maxwell Jing let out a sigh of relief. "That's good!" Thank goodness he hadn't missed out on a beauty because of one wrong decision!

He never doubted Ethan Gu's integrity. He naturally assumed that Ethan Gu would keep his word. But later, he learned that Ethan Gu was not always a man of his word—when necessary, he could be more slippery than anyone!

"Sanctuary Heir..."

Grace Gu walked in, and before she could steady herself, Maxwell Jing rushed into her arms, calling out sweetly, "Sister Grace, I've missed you so much!"

"Huh?" Grace Gu was caught off guard and stammered, "I was only gone for a little while!"

Maxwell Jing hugged her and nuzzled closer. "I just missed you, Sister!" Mmm, she smells nice!

Grace Gu poked his forehead with her finger and laughed, "Such a smooth talker!"

Ethan Gu stood aside, watching the two. His expression was a bit odd, because just now, when Maxwell Jing rushed past him, he whispered four words in Ethan's ear: "Marry her, take her!"

Is he really determined to marry Grace Gu? By the time he grows up, Grace will be old! Ethan couldn't help but wonder if Maxwell Jing was deliberately setting him up. Now, Maxwell was still clinging to Grace, and Ethan had no reason to scold him!

Grace Gu hadn't forgotten her duties. She turned to Ethan Gu and said, "Sanctuary Heir, there's a boy named Lucas Lu who wants to see you!" She knew that child was one of the selected group, and being allowed to request an audience meant he had permission. She'd heard they were supposed to pick two for the Sanctuary Heir, but he only chose one. It seemed the master still wanted one more person by the heir's side!

Ethan Gu frowned. "Let him in!"

Grace Gu turned to leave, but before she went, she couldn't help reminding Maxwell Jing, "You need to follow the rules inside the Sanctuary!" She was fond of this child, but if he kept acting out, trouble was bound to find him sooner or later.

Maxwell Jing nodded obediently. But as soon as Grace Gu left, he collapsed carelessly into a chair. Ethan Gu glanced at him and spat out three words, "Two-faced brat!"

Maxwell Jing lazily shot him a look. "You think you're any better? Aren't you two-faced too?"

Lucas Lu came in and was momentarily stunned by Maxwell Jing's lack of decorum. But then he remembered that Maxwell had even dared to hit the Sanctuary Heir, so maybe nothing should surprise him anymore.

He walked up to Ethan Gu, bowed respectfully, and said, "Sanctuary Heir, I wish to serve by your side!"

Unlike before, Ethan Gu didn't reject him outright. He asked, "Has Master Kieran Kong agreed?"

"Master Kieran Kong said that as long as the Sanctuary Heir agrees, I can stay by your side!" Lucas Lu looked at him with eyes full of hope—he truly wanted to follow Ethan Gu.

Ethan Gu thought for a moment, then nodded. "Alright, you may stay with me."

Lucas Lu was overjoyed. When he came back to his senses, he quickly said, "Thank you, Sanctuary Heir!"

Ethan Gu waved his hand. "You may go." For a child to act this way was not strange at all—on the contrary, it felt natural. Many adults couldn't match his presence.

Once again, only two people remained in the room. Maxwell Jing was still sprawled carelessly in his chair. After a moment of silence, Ethan Gu finally spoke, "Aren't you going to ask why?"

He had just made such a demand, and now accepted another person—anyone would feel upset or dissatisfied.

Maxwell Jing smiled. "That's the Sanctuary Heir's privilege!" With that, he got up and walked out.

Ethan Gu watched his departing figure, lost in thought. He really didn't seem angry—why was that?

Looking at the person in front of him, bleeding from all seven orifices and writhing in pain, Kieran Kong nodded with satisfaction. "It seems the Sanctuary Heir has succeeded!"

Ethan Gu replied expressionlessly, "It's already been three days." It had taken three days to develop a fairly ordinary poison—nothing to be proud of.

He seemed long accustomed to this method of testing medicines. He felt nothing for the person in agony; any fear he should have felt had long since been purged from his body.

Kieran Kong was quite satisfied with his disciple. Watching Ethan Gu pack up the medicines and wash his hands, he finally said, "Starting tomorrow, those children will begin training—including the two by the Sanctuary Heir's side! To become Ethan Gu's right-hand aides, they must pay a higher price."

Ethan Gu paused, then said, "I need one person to stay with me. Let it be Maxwell Jing. The things he needs to learn, I'll teach him myself."

Hearing this, Kieran Kong couldn't help but frown. Ethan Gu could certainly teach a child, but for someone to become his capable aide, that alone wasn't enough.

Ethan Gu glanced at him coldly. "If he fails in the end, there's still Lucas Lu!" That was why he'd kept Lucas around.

Suddenly, he didn't want Maxwell Jing to undergo such training. He knew all too well how brutal it could be. But if he only kept Maxwell by his side, Kieran Kong would never agree. With another candidate, Kieran might reconsider—because even if Maxwell was eliminated, there would still be someone useful left, and the loss wouldn't be too great.

Seeing Ethan Gu's determination, Kieran Kong had no choice but to compromise. "Fine! But he must participate in the monthly tests. If he passes, the Sanctuary Heir may continue to teach him. If he fails, he must join the others in training." Kieran had always admired Maxwell Jing, which was why he set this condition—he didn't want Ethan's impulsiveness to ruin him.

Ethan Gu knew this was Kieran Kong's bottom line, so he didn't push further. He nodded and left the alchemy room.

At night, Healer's Sanctuary was unusually quiet—except for one particular place, where those held inside served only one purpose: to test medicines.

Healer's Sanctuary was divided into Inner and Outer Valley. Only those of certain status could reside in the Inner Valley. Everyone there knew it was forbidden territory and never approached lightly. The blood-curdling screams alone were enough to send chills down one's spine—who would dare go near?
