Defying Fate

"Hmph, I wondered who it was. Turns out it's just a lackey of the underworld, a member of the Hades Circle?"

The person pressing down on my head let go.

"Look who's talking. So you're one of those people from the Nether Syndicate who kill anything connected to ghosts, good or bad. I finally get to see it for myself today."

After a brief exchange of barbs, the two of them stood on either side of me, squaring off.

"This kid's earth soul is gone. Soon, he'll either be a lunatic or a fool. Rather than letting him suffer, ending it now—what's wrong with that?"

"Hmph, who gave you the right to decide life and death?"

"I don't want to argue with you here. Lately, a lot of vengeful spirits have escaped from the underworld. I suspect it's you people from the Hades Circle who let them out on purpose."

"Pah, nothing good ever comes out of your mouth."

The man in front of me snorted coldly and turned to leave.

I smiled foolishly, staring blankly at the woman before me.

"Sister, you're really beautiful."

The woman squatted beside me, took off her shawl, and draped it over me, looking at me with deep regret.

"People from the Ghost Syndicate are truly hateful. It's a shame I can't save you. Listen, you still have a bit of consciousness left, but soon you'll lose your mind. That's your fate."

As she spoke, the woman stood up, glared fiercely at the three men in black lying on the ground, and walked away slowly.

"Sister, where are you going?"

She walked away, looking back at every step, her expression forlorn, shaking her head and sighing as she left.

I sucked on my finger, pouted, and started crying and fussing.

"Brother, get up." Someone grabbed me from behind. The voice was familiar. I turned my head numbly.

"No, no, I want to find sister."

Then I felt someone hoisting me up, dragging me along as we walked...
