Uncle Martin and May Chen

1/4/2026

Rona Muir kept making all sorts of faces at Cici, and finally Cici played along, saying, "Ah, yes... I majored in nursing in college, and I always carry a bunch of emergency medicine with me! Uncle Martin fainted on the road just now—was he on his way to see a doctor when he passed out? Is the nearest hospital pretty far? Should we drive Uncle Martin there ourselves?"

May Chen turned around and saw that Uncle Martin really did look unwell.

May Chen's resistant expression finally softened a little.

To prove she knew medicine, Cici quickly rummaged through her luggage and pulled out a medical kit.

When May Chen saw that Cici's kit was actually full of medicine, she finally said, "Come on in."

Those three words felt like an imperial pardon—Cici and Rona both breathed a sigh of relief at the same time.

Even though May Chen let Cici and Rona into her house, she was still full of hostility toward them.

Cici and Rona were both puzzled.

They hadn’t even explained why they were here yet, so why was May Chen looking at them like they were some kind of threat?

Cici thought to herself, was her vibe really that non-threatening?

Rona Muir looked innocent, as if to say, 'I'm about to burst out laughing, okay?'

Why does May Chen keep glaring at me with that fierce, disapproving look?

Uncle Martin seemed to know May Chen very well. He immediately reached for her hand and said, "If it weren't for these two girls just now, I might've died out there."

May Chen looked flustered. "Don't say stuff like that."

Uncle Martin chuckled and said, "Seriously, you're jealous of kids now? They're just children!"

A hint of shyness flashed across May Chen's face. She twisted away and said, "I am not jealous!"

Cici and Rona suddenly understood what was going on!

They exchanged a look and wiped the cold sweat from their brows at the same time.

Auntie, you’re seriously overthinking things!

We really have zero interest in a sixty-year-old uncle!

Cici noticed Uncle Martin’s face didn’t look so good, so she hurried over and pretended to check his pulse like she was a real doctor.

Honestly, she didn’t actually know how to check a pulse.

But for simple stuff like headaches, fevers, or diarrhea, even someone with zero medical knowledge could figure it out if they had a bit of common sense.

After asking a few questions, Cici quickly figured out Uncle Martin either had dysentery or enteritis. Anyway, the solution was simple—stop the diarrhea and rehydrate!

Cici opened the medicine box, picked out some anti-diarrheal pills, and handed them to Uncle Martin. "These work great. Just take one in the morning and one at night. But you passed out on the road earlier, which means you’re seriously dehydrated. You need to drink some glucose and saline to restore your fluids."

Uncle Martin didn’t hesitate at all—he swallowed the pills Cici gave him right away.

Cici took out a bottle of glucose—not for injection, but for Uncle Martin to drink directly.

Uncle Martin did exactly as Cici said. After taking the medicine and drinking the glucose, his complexion returned to normal in less than twenty minutes.

Seeing Uncle Martin recover, May Chen finally relaxed. She turned to Cici and Rona and asked, "So, what brings you two to Chen Village?"

Chen Village is pretty remote—that’s one reason it took them so long to drive here.

Most of the young people in this village have gone out to work in the cities. The only ones left behind are women, elderly folks, and kids.

May Chen runs the little grocery store here. Everyone in the village buys their oil, salt, soy sauce, and vinegar from her.

So she’s basically a household name around here.

Nine years ago, May Chen found a man on the mountain and brought him home. He’s lived with her ever since.

They’ve lived together as husband and wife ever since.

But the man doesn’t remember who he is or where he came from.

He doesn’t have anything to prove his identity, either.

May Chen never married before. After she found this man, she gave him a name: Martin.

Cici hesitated for a moment, then braced herself and said, "We heard you have a royal skincare formula. We’d like to buy it for a high price. What’s your asking price?"

May Chen gave Cici a long look, then glanced at Rona. She said to Rona, "You’re the one who wants to buy it, right?"

Wow, she guessed right!

Rona didn’t pretend. "Yeah, it’s me."

May Chen was just as blunt. "Not for sale."

Cici and May Chen were both left speechless, not sure what to say next.

"Don’t think just because you saved Martin that I’ll fall for this." May Chen impatiently waved them off. "Go on, leave Chen Village. I’m not selling the formula."

Just like that, Cici and Rona were kicked out of the house.

They watched as the big iron gate slammed shut with a bang. Cici and Rona were left helpless.

Back in the car, they looked at each other, lost for words.

So, what now?

"May Chen is really something! Why is she so jealous? I mean, you and I aren’t even thirty yet—why would we go for an old uncle?" Rona complained to Cici.

Cici nodded quietly. "I don’t need to be jealous, but you..."

Hehehe, Rona, you got plenty of attention from French uncles back in France, didn’t you?

Older men totally love your type!

Rona instantly lost her confidence. "Hey, just because I have a big chest doesn’t mean I don’t like younger guys, okay!"

Cici couldn’t help it—she burst out laughing.

Rona shook her head helplessly. "Forget it. I didn’t expect to succeed on our first try anyway. Let’s find a place to park. Looks like we’ll be sleeping in the car tonight!"

Cici nodded, started the engine, and drove away from May Chen’s house, parking near the village committee office.

No choice—the land here is flat and perfect for parking!

They reclined their seats and just lay back.

"Cici, don’t you think Uncle Martin is kind of weird?" Rona said, resting her arm behind her head. "He just doesn’t fit in with this place."

Cici nodded. "Same here. When he got in the car, he immediately found the seat adjustment lever. Only someone familiar with this car or this model would do that so smoothly. And your car isn’t cheap. He was way too natural about it—not like someone who’s only ridden in a car once or twice."

They exchanged a look. Okay, time to ask the locals!

No sooner said than done.

They grabbed a bunch of food and knocked on a villager’s door.

The villagers were already curious about the two pretty girls who brought Uncle Martin home. Now, seeing them bring gifts, they were even more enthusiastic—pulling Cici and Rona to the table and eagerly spilling all the gossip about May Chen and Uncle Martin.

But after hearing their stories, Cici and Rona felt even more suspicious.

Uncle Martin is no ordinary guy.

All these years, he’s lived in May Chen’s house. Without an ID, they couldn’t get officially married—so they just lived together.

May Chen treats Uncle Martin really well, and he seems to treat her pretty well too.

But every month, Uncle Martin leaves the village for a few days. When he comes back, he always brings money for May Chen.

No matter how much May Chen or the villagers ask, Uncle Martin never tells them where the money comes from.

Oh wow, Uncle Martin’s got plenty of secrets!

No wonder May Chen is so nervous.

Once they’d learned what they wanted, Cici and Rona politely took their leave.

For two women, it’s just safer to stay in the car.

"I’m sure of it now—Uncle Martin isn’t suffering from amnesia," Cici said firmly. "He’s hiding something."

Rona pinched her chin, curious. "What could be so important for him to hide? Who is Uncle Martin, really?"

Cici patted Rona’s hand. "Forget it, let’s focus on figuring out May Chen. Whoever Uncle Martin is, it’s none of our business. No need to complicate things."

Rona instantly agreed.

There’s only half a month left until Grandma Evelyn Yin’s 80th birthday. Cici kept that date in mind—she had to attend, because it was her only chance to see her two children from afar.

And maybe investigate her lost memories while she was at it.

While they were busy organizing their luggage in the car, Uncle Martin quietly appeared in front of them.

"Who are you? How did you find this place?" Uncle Martin looked at Cici and Rona, full of suspicion.

Ha, told you—Uncle Martin isn’t really suffering from amnesia, he’s just pretending!

Cici quickly explained, "Don’t get us wrong, Uncle. We’re not interested in your personal business. We just want to buy May Chen’s formula, that’s all. If you can help us negotiate, we’ll pay you a generous finder’s fee."

Rona added, "We don’t want any trouble. Once we get what we want, we’ll leave right away."

Uncle Martin didn’t seem to believe them.

"Anyone who can afford a Porsche Cayenne wouldn’t care about something like this," Uncle Martin said, his eyes dark and thoughtful as he looked at them.

"Exactly. If someone’s never ridden in a Cayenne before, they wouldn’t know where the seat memory switch is," Rona shot back, arms crossed. "This isn’t a brand-new model, but someone who’s never been in one wouldn’t find the seat adjustment that quickly."

"So, Uncle, I think there’s been a misunderstanding," Cici said right away. "Believe us or not, our only goal is May Chen’s skincare formula. Whatever price you ask, we’ll pay. Once we get what we want, we won’t say a word about your business. After all, there’s no conflict of interest between us, right?"

Uncle Martin’s eyes narrowed slightly.

Suddenly, Cici realized Uncle Martin’s mannerisms were strikingly similar to someone she remembered.
