General's Wife Is Me
"Alright, alright! You're a generation older than me, you're the boss!" Grace said. "Aunt Maya, you have to dress up tomorrow—who knows, you might run into Prince Cheng!"
"Why should I dress up just to meet him?"
"To make him mad, of course!" Grace said. "Let him see what a beautiful, amazing girl he missed out on!"
"Boring!" Maya Summers rolled her eyes and walked away.
Honestly, these birthday banquets are the dullest thing ever.
Plus, when a bunch of girls get together, drama is bound to happen.
Like spilling sauce on yourself, or accidentally falling into water—stuff like that.
Grace had been through it before.
When she was little, someone shoved her into the water from behind. She almost drowned.
Ever since then, she’s been terrified of water.
Thankfully, once she got the Dragon Scale, she stopped being afraid of water.
...
Grace told Maya Summers to dress up, and Maya rolled her eyes at her. But when it came time for the banquet, Maya really did dress up extra nicely.
She ditched her usual heroic style and wore a pale yellow dress—she looked so stunning, even the plum blossoms by the roadside paled in comparison.
Grace slipped into the same carriage with her, and the two of them happily headed off to the banquet.
The General, the Prime Minister, and the Grand Chamberlain were the three most powerful officials in the court.
So, for the Grand Chamberlain Shen’s birthday banquet, nearly every official in the court showed up.
There wasn’t enough space for all the carriages inside the estate, so they cleared a big area by the canal on the side of the Grand Chamberlain’s residence just for parking.
It’s just like they say: enemies always cross paths.
They had barely stepped out of the carriage before bumping into their nemesis.
It was Sophie Sun and her cousin Serena Liu.
Trailing behind them were four or five maids, making quite the entourage.
Their carriages were parked close together, so as soon as they got out, they ran into each other—no way to pretend they didn’t see.
As soon as she saw her, Sophie Sun flashed a triumphant smile. "Miss Lawrence, hope you’ve been well."
Grace nodded, "Hope you’ve been well."
"I heard you were hurt. Are you all better now?" Sophie Sun asked.
"All better. Did your injuries heal too, Miss Sun?" Grace asked.
She asked very politely.
But to Sophie Sun, it sounded like a jab.
Because her injuries were nothing like Grace’s.
Her injuries? Courtesy of Princess Lynne Ling from Windspire Kingdom.
Pretty embarrassing, honestly.
Sophie Sun’s smile faltered for a moment, but she kept her composure. "I’m all better too! Thanks for your concern!"
"I’m not so sure!" Grace said. "Looks like you’re limping, and you’ve got a bruise on your cheekbone! Why rush to the banquet instead of resting up?"
Sophie Sun shot her a sideways glance and suddenly smiled knowingly. "I heard you nearly died just to avoid going with Emperor Henry—cut your own heart meridian, didn’t you? The Emperor was so moved!"
She leaned closer to Grace and asked, "But who were you really dying for? Was it really the Emperor?"
Grace glanced at her but said nothing.
"Oh, I know who it was for! But you’ll never get him in this lifetime! The General’s Wife... is me!" Sophie Sun finished with a flourish and turned away.
Serena Liu gave Grace a look full of envy, jealousy, and pure hatred before following after her.
"Those two women, seriously, they just beg for a smack," Maya Summers raised her brows at them.
Grace: "Exactly!"
...
Samuel Summers was greeting guests at the gate. When he saw Maya Summers and Grace, his eyes lit up and he hurried over. "Maya, Grace, you’re here! This is wonderful!"
"Wonderful? What’s so wonderful about it?" Grace raised her brows.
