Not Understanding Evan Xiao's Way of Caring

12/19/2025

Evan Xiao let her hold his hand, unmoving, quietly watching her.

Lily Bai, I’m not just an ordinary person.

I am Prince Drake.

House Drake stands at the head of the Three Great Houses, ruling this world.

Your lifespan is only a few decades, but ours stretches tens of thousands of years, maybe even longer.

Even if I wanted to take you back, the place where I live isn’t somewhere an ordinary person like you could ever reach!

So, it’s impossible for us.

Just forget about me!

Evan Xiao took a deep breath, withdrew his hand, and stood up to leave.

......

Grace woke up feeling refreshed and clear-headed.

Even though she’d spent the whole night plagued by nightmares, she actually slept pretty well?

Getting up this morning, she felt energized, almost like she was back in her old cultivation days.

Her body felt fine, but her mood was anything but.

The questions she couldn’t answer last night bubbled up again.

Where should she go from here?

Staying at the general’s manor, it was getting harder and harder to get close to Evan Xiao. Should she just leave?

If she didn’t leave, Cecilia Chen would eventually kill her! Cecilia was a third-rank Spirit Practitioner and basically half the boss of this manor.

Fine, she’d leave then!

Her grandmother’s birthday was coming up soon, so she’d have to go home anyway.

If she left now, everything would be safe and foolproof—no last-minute mishaps to mess things up.

Once she got home, she’d figure out what that white medicine was, and look for another chance to make her move.

Or maybe, she could figure out why sleeping with Evan Xiao gave her a Spirit Root—wait, maybe it wasn’t just Evan! Maybe sleeping with any man would do the trick?

After all, in her last life, Evan was the only man she ever slept with.

Honestly, who knows...

With that thought, she made up her mind—she’d leave today!

She turned and went straight to find Steward Qin.

All the servants in the general’s manor were just temp hires.

Unlike the Prime Minister’s Residence, where most staff had signed life contracts, and some families had served the Zhu Family for generations.

So, if a servant at the general’s manor wanted to quit, all they needed was Steward Qin’s approval and they could leave anytime.

After Grace told Steward Qin she wanted to leave, he said, “Miss Lily, I don’t know why the General asked you to leave the Frostmoon Quarters, but from what I see, he’s been taking special care of you.”

“Really?” Grace couldn’t quite understand Evan Xiao’s idea of ‘taking care.’

“I haven’t had a chance to tell you yet,” Steward Qin said. “Servants in the stables usually get one to three taels of silver a month. But last night, the General said to raise your salary to fifteen taels a month. That’s double what the stable manager gets!”

Grace’s eyebrows lifted. “Is that so?”

“So, I think you should stay! You won’t find a job with pay this high anywhere else!” Steward Qin was genuinely looking out for her.

Grace thought about it. The only reason he did all this must be because of Cecilia Chen, right?

She’d helped Cecilia before, so maybe he felt it was wrong to just kick her out—so he bumped up her salary.

But honestly, this didn’t help her with what she really wanted to do.

So... she’d leave anyway!

“Thank you for your kindness, Steward Qin,” Grace said. “But my mind’s made up. I hope you’ll approve.”

Steward Qin sighed and said, “If you’re sure, I’ll talk to the General when he returns! Even if you move to the stables, you’re still officially part of the Frostmoon Quarters.”

Grace nodded. “Thank you, Steward Qin.”

......

She pictured Evan Xiao’s reaction when he heard she was leaving.

Would he just grunt with a blank face, or sigh with relief, glad to have one less trouble to deal with?

Probably the latter, huh?
