May Parker Wants to Marry the Magnate
The news that Lily Evans and the owner of Savory House were close friends spread through the village like wildfire. Hearing this, May Parker’s eyes burned with jealousy; she twisted her handkerchief until it tore, and complained to Helen Parker, “Mom, what’s so good about Lily Evans, that even the boss of Savory House wants to be friends with her?”
Helen Parker thought for a moment and said, "Oh, it's just Savory House. Once you marry into the Miller Estate and become a young mistress, even the owner will have to curry favor with you."
May Parker lowered her head. She kept asking Arthur Evans about Benjamin Zhang’s proposal, but Arthur always brushed her off. The more May Parker thought about it, the more anxious she became, afraid that if too much time passed, Benjamin Zhang would forget about her. She decided to go to the city to see him and ask when he would come to formally propose.
While May Parker was thinking about her marriage, she heard Helen Parker gossiping nearby: "May Parker, there’s a house being built on the land behind the village, near the mountain. I took a look from afar last time—the place is huge, even bigger than Lily Evans’s house. The wood and bricks are all top quality! I tried to ask around to see whose house it was, but the workers wouldn’t say a word. Even the village chief kept his mouth shut. I asked him several times, but he just pretended not to hear me and wouldn’t tell me anything."
May Parker didn’t care about any new house. All she could think about was how to dress up nicely tomorrow to go into the city.
Helen Parker muttered to herself, "Such a grand house must belong to a rich family. May Parker, I bet that rich family has a son. If you can’t marry into the Miller Estate, marrying into the rich family behind the village wouldn’t be bad either. It’s close to home, and you could easily bring things back to your family."
May Parker finally responded, "If I marry into a rich family, the things they give me will be mine. Why should I bring them back to my family?"
Helen Parker immediately grabbed May Parker’s ear and scolded, "You ungrateful brat! Have I ever let you go hungry or without clothes all these years? Listen to me—don’t think you can kick your family aside once you strike it rich!"
Right then and there, mother and daughter started arguing about whether May Parker should bring things back to her family if she married into a rich family.
