Severe Hemorrhage
Quentin Lin knew that his father, Dr. Rowan Lin, was a man of immense pride and self-respect, never one to easily acknowledge another family's medical skills. Helplessly rolling his eyes, he turned his attention back to the baby.
Dr. Rowan Lin saw that Quentin Lin was too absorbed to pay him any mind. Though he wanted to leave, he couldn’t tear himself away from the fascinating medical instruments. Using the excuse of watching his grandchild, he lingered in the room, sneaking peeks at the equipment and studying the principles behind the blood exchange.
Quentin Lin had long seen through his father’s thoughts. He knew his father cared about saving face and would never admit it, so Quentin simply pretended not to notice, letting Dr. Rowan Lin watch as much as he wanted.
The father and son stayed in the room for half an hour when suddenly, from the neighboring delivery room, Alexander Hayes’s startled cry rang out, calling for Dr. Rowan Lin.
Both Dr. Rowan Lin and Quentin Lin felt their hearts skip a beat. Something was wrong.
“I’m going to check on your sister!” Dr. Rowan Lin said as he rushed out like a gust of wind, heading straight for Lily Evans’s room.
Inside the delivery room, Alexander Hayes’s hands were covered in blood. Lily Evans had fallen unconscious, her face as pale as paper!
“Dad, Lily’s hemorrhaging badly! Please, save her!” Alexander Hayes was more anxious than he’d ever been before.
“I’ll stabilize her with acupuncture—you go get Quentin!” Dr. Rowan Lin ordered.
Alexander Hayes hurried off to find Quentin Lin. True to his reputation as a legendary physician, Dr. Rowan Lin didn’t panic in the face of crisis. He calmly and steadily began administering acupuncture to Lily Evans.
The midwife from the next room rushed in, checked Lily Evans’s condition, and wailed, "It’s bad—she’s hemorrhaging! She won’t make it!"
Dr. Rowan Lin snapped, "Nonsense!"
The midwife hurriedly protested, "I know you’re the legendary physician, but you’re still human, not a god! You can’t save everyone! I’ve delivered babies for decades—over a thousand births—and I’ve never seen a woman survive a hemorrhage like this! The blood is pouring out as if it’s being sprayed! No matter how skilled you are, you can’t just conjure blood out of thin air! If she loses all her blood, she’ll die!"
Dr. Rowan Lin grew irritated by the midwife’s shouting and promptly kicked her out.
As soon as the midwife left, Alexander Hayes entered with Quentin Lin.
Quentin Lin was already prepared. The moment he heard Lily Evans was hemorrhaging, he drew a bottle of blood from a pre-selected donor and hurried in.
"Dad, I’m going to give Lily a blood transfusion!" Quentin Lin said to Dr. Rowan Lin.
Dr. Rowan Lin quickly made room at the bedside, letting Quentin Lin take over. He watched anxiously, his nerves stretched tight. "Quentin, can you handle this alone?"
"I can. It’s just a transfusion, not as complicated as a full blood exchange." Quentin Lin worked swiftly, hanging the blood bottle on a prepared stand and skillfully disinfecting Lily Evans’s arm before inserting the needle.
Alexander Hayes and Dr. Rowan Lin stared intently as Quentin Lin inserted the needle into Lily Evans’s arm. Scarlet blood flowed through the oddly-made soft tube and into her body.
After a while, Quentin Lin monitored the transfusion and instructed, "Dad, you focus on stopping Lily’s bleeding and preventing further hemorrhage. With the blood bottle in place, she won’t die from blood loss. If there’s only a third left, send someone to tell me—Simon Yu will bring a fresh bottle. The baby can’t be moved during the blood exchange, so I need to watch over there."
Dr. Rowan Lin looked at his six-year-old son, calmly directing him. For a moment, he felt as if a brilliant new star was rising in the world of medicine.
