Southriver Underground Palace

These item cards aren’t very useful, and their redemption prices are low. For example, a Golden Body Card only costs one million Fame Points, and a Healing Card just 1.5 million. Right now, Ian Song has 2.001 million Fame Points, so these prices are ridiculously cheap.

Most importantly, these item cards aren’t limited to the host’s own use.

So, Ian redeemed ten Teleportation Cards, two Healing Cards, and ten Golden Body Cards for Lynn Ning.

With these three types of cards, she can protect herself if she ever runs into danger.

“Did the upgraded System really just add an Item Shop?”

Ian felt a bit dissatisfied, staring at the System interface for a while, but found nothing else and could only close it.

A few days passed in a flash. During this time, the Mech Squad kept up their training, and after Ian "defeated" Tyson Tian, he became a star among the City Special Police—plenty of female officers even asked him out to eat.

But he turned them all down.

That day, Ryan Zhou hurried to the Mech Squad training ground, looking pretty serious.

“Captain, did something happen?” Ian asked.

Ryan Zhou said, “At three a.m. yesterday, machinery at a major construction site in Southriver County was sabotaged. After the police were called, Southriver’s special police intervened and discovered an underground palace beneath the site.”

“And then?” Ian asked again.

Ryan Zhou continued, “Nine special police officers entered the underground palace and were attacked by a swarm of giant rats. They had to retreat, but by early this morning, all nine mysteriously died!”

“They couldn’t determine the cause of death?” Ian asked in surprise. With technology so advanced these days, how could they not figure out how someone died?

“No results yet.”

Ryan Zhou shook his head. “Southriver’s special police requested reinforcements from the city, so I ordered Deputy Captain Leon Liu to take two squads to Southriver. I just got word that after entering the underground palace, not only did they face giant rats, but also hundreds of giant snakes. The Seventh and Sixth Squads suffered heavy losses—five dead on the spot, six seriously wounded, five lightly injured!”

“So you want the Mech Squad to handle this?” Ian asked.

Ryan Zhou nodded. “The Mech Squad gets the best pay and equipment at our special police base. After all that training, it’s time to show what you can do. If you succeed, the Mech Squad will become our ace team. If you fail, both of us will lose face.”

Ian nodded in agreement. “So when do we leave?”

“We’ll leave in an hour. I’ll personally lead the First, Second, Third, Fourth, and Fifth Squads. The other three squads will stay behind to guard the base!”

After finishing his conversation with Ryan Zhou, Ian went to gather the Mech Squad.

When everyone heard they finally had a mission, the whole team was super excited.

An hour later, ten special-police flyers lifted off from the base, headed straight for Southriver County.

At full speed, the flyers could reach five hundred kilometers per hour, and Southriver County was only seventy or eighty kilometers from Plumridge City. So in less than ten minutes, they arrived at Southriver’s special police base.

Director Henry Yun from Southriver was already waiting there with a group, including Leon Liu and Max Lin from Plumridge.

After a quick round of greetings, everyone headed into the conference room.

The meeting was chaired by Director Henry Yun himself.

He started by playing a video—battle footage showing the county special police fighting giant rats, and Leon Liu’s squads fighting both giant rats and giant snakes.

The video showed that both the giant rats and giant snakes had extremely high defense. Regular laser weapons could only injure the giant rats, not kill them in one shot.

Plus, there were a lot of giant rats—at least over three thousand.

As for the giant snakes, their defense was even crazier. Laser weapons could only leave faint white marks on their black scales, and only high-explosive grenades could blast off a few scales—but still couldn’t really hurt them.

There was even a shot in the footage of Max Lin, suited up in his mech, getting smacked flying by a snake’s tail.

The giant rats fought at about fourth- or fifth-level warrior strength, but the snakes were terrifying—reaching ninth-level warrior power, with defenses comparable to War-Generals.

After watching the spliced-together footage, everyone looked very grim.

This mission’s not going to be easy!

After some discussion, Ryan Zhou shared his opinion: if the special police just stormed the underground palace, it’d be hard to wipe out thousands of giant rats and hundreds of giant snakes. The best way would be to bombard the site with city artillery and wipe them all out together.

“I disagree!”

A cultured-looking middle-aged man spoke up.

“And you are?” Ryan Zhou glanced at Henry Yun, asking.

Henry Yun smiled. “Captain Zhou, let me introduce you—this is Director Arthur Chen from the Provincial Cultural Relics Bureau.”

“So you’re from the province. Director Chen, do you have any better suggestions?” Ryan Zhou asked, looking at him.

“My only job is to make sure the relics inside the underground palace aren’t damaged. How you deal with the giant rats and snakes is your City Special Police’s problem!”

The moment he said that, everyone shot him unfriendly looks—his words were seriously aggravating.

Ryan Zhou said grimly, “Director Chen, our special police have already suffered heavy casualties. If we keep attacking the giant rats and snakes, we’ll just lose more people!”

Arthur Chen replied arrogantly, “That’s not my concern. The relics in the underground palace are important and must not be damaged. That’s a direct order from Deputy Governor Victor Zhang. If you have a problem, take it up with him!”

“What kind of crap order is that? Are our special police lives worthless?” Leon Liu slammed the table, cursing.

“How dare you insult Deputy Governor Zhang!” Arthur Chen pointed at Leon Liu, shouting angrily.

Leon Liu sneered, “Yeah, I dare. Most of my officers are lying in the hospital. If I send more down there, they’ll just die too. If you want those relics so badly, go get them yourself!”

Arthur Chen’s expression turned nasty. He shot Leon Liu a venomous look, then stared at Ryan Zhou. “Captain Zhou, is that how you feel too?”

Just then, Leon Liu’s phone rang.

His face quickly turned ashen. He looked at Ryan Zhou and said, “Everyone from the Sixth and Seventh Squads is dead!”

“What?!”

Ryan Zhou shot to his feet, shock and disbelief all over his face.

As for the others in the conference room, when they heard the news, they all looked at each other in horror—a chill running down their spines. Except for Leon Liu and Max Lin, every officer who’d entered the underground palace was dead.
