Director Wei agreed. Already over forty, Director Wei saw that the reporter was a beautiful woman, and she was very enthusiastic, so he didn’t think much and accepted. Rachel took Director Wei to a high-end restaurant, and he had no doubts about Rachel at all.
Rachel first chatted with Director Wei about many topics. The conversation was very pleasant, and she kept toasting him.
Director Wei drank happily and became a bit tipsy. Then Rachel started to get to the main topic. Director Wei’s expression turned somewhat grim, but because of the previously joyful atmosphere, he couldn’t easily refuse.
But Rachel saw hope in Director Wei’s face, because when she mentioned the special criminal department, his expression changed significantly. Although he quickly recovered, Rachel noticed something was off.
“Director Wei, I just want to investigate the rumors circulating among the police. Nowadays, even regular citizens have heard about it. Some have even seen those police officers dressed in black.”
“It’s just a rumor, you’re overthinking it. Heh, comrade reporter, as a director, why would I lie to you?”
During their first meeting, no matter how Rachel tried, she couldn’t get Director Wei to say anything useful, so she had to give up. Then she started investigating in H City, deciding to begin with police-related buildings one by one.
A week later, Rachel tried to meet Director Wei again, but he declined with various excuses. It was clear that Director Wei definitely knew something, but this was probably a major internal secret of the police, and he wouldn’t reveal it easily.
To investigate the rumored mysterious special criminal department, Rachel ran all over H City’s Public Security Bureau and police stations, searching everywhere. She didn’t lose heart at all.
Rachel also told Mason Wan’s parents about this. They gave her a lot of financial support. It had already been more than half a year, and Mason Wan still hadn’t woken up.
Over the course of half a year, Rachel tirelessly ran around H City every day, investigating from south to north, east to west.
Eventually, Rachel uncovered some clues—a breakthrough related to a building. She used every method she could to investigate and finally heard that, years ago, a large expanse of farmland in the east had become police property, and a police academy was built there. No matter how she checked, Rachel couldn’t find out anything about this academy.
Some people had gone there before, but found only wasteland and no sign of the academy. Although no one had seen it, it supposedly existed. Rachel found a worker who had worked there over twenty years ago, and he clearly remembered that many people had built a large facility there.
One day, Rachel discovered that a transport company delivered large quantities of fresh food there every week.
After investigating the transport company for a long time, Rachel devised a detailed plan. On a Monday, when the company was delivering a truckload of vegetables, Rachel waited on a second-floor spot by the road. As soon as the truck passed, she jumped onto it.
She succeeded—Rachel landed among the vegetables, ecstatic, quietly waiting in the truck, hoping to finally see the special criminal department she had been searching for nearly a year.
Sure enough, Rachel saw a vast complex, with many people coming out to unload vegetables. The truck stopped at the gate but didn’t go in. After Rachel got out, she seized the moment to enter, but was immediately caught.
They planned to send Rachel back, claiming this was just a simple police training facility and nothing special.
Rachel didn’t believe them, but these police officers in black still gave her a brief tour. It looked just like a regular school—complete training facilities, dormitories, a cafeteria, and a place for black vans. Everything seemed perfectly normal.
But Rachel was sure she hadn’t made a mistake. She kept telling the police she’d encountered ghosts and similar things, but they just listened, took notes, and prepared to send her away.
At that moment, two men approached—one looked over forty, had short hair, wore a gray coat, and smoked a cigarette; the other was tall and thin, wearing black-rimmed glasses. The police showed them great respect.
"Come inside and let's talk."
The man with glasses was called Hugh Thompson, and the middle-aged man in the coat was Chief Stone. Rachel was led to a reception room. Hugh Thompson smiled as he listened to Rachel talk about her boyfriend Mason Wan and her investigation into their special criminal department.
Chief Stone gave a wry smile, holding his head in a troubled manner.
"Our organization is called the Ghost Burial Squad. Outwardly, we claim to be the special criminal department."
Hugh Thompson began to explain, and Rachel felt a surge of hope.
Finally, there was progress. Rachel was overjoyed. Hugh Thompson agreed to personally help resolve the matter, bringing six team members, driving off with Rachel.
On the way, Hugh Thompson asked Rachel for details, then smiled and asked a question.
"Miss, if we resolve this, your boyfriend may have to join us and learn how to effectively deal with ghosts. After all, he can see ghosts now, and there’s no helping that. What about you?"
"Huh? What could I do?"
Rachel widened her eyes, looking at Hugh Thompson, but he just smiled.
Hugh Thompson led the Ghost Burial Squad to Rachel’s city, where they met Mason Wan. After investigating, they told Rachel that Mason Wan was possessed, which was why he hadn’t woken up.
At this point, Mason Wan’s entire body showed visible black meridians, but medical tests still found nothing wrong. The trouble was, the ghost possessing him had completely taken over his body. If they tried to force the ghost out, Mason Wan’s life could be at risk.

The only option was negotiation. That day, Hugh Thompson had Mason Wan’s family take him out of the hospital to a place with strong yang energy—Workers’ Stadium. In broad daylight, with plenty of sunlight and crowds of people, the yang energy was very strong.
After the Ghost Burial Squad set up a formation, Mason Wan was placed inside. As the formation activated, Rachel was shocked to see Mason Wan finally responding.
Suddenly, Mason Wan opened his eyes wide, mouth agape, glaring viciously at everyone around him. Red ropes bound every corner around Mason Wan. The ghost had emerged, and Rachel watched wide-eyed from the side.
"Hey, buddy, if there’s a problem, let’s talk it out. No need to take over this guy’s body."
Hugh Thompson spoke lightly, but the ghost just roared angrily, showing no intention of communicating.
Normally, when a ghost possesses someone for a long time, the body can’t handle it and collapses. However, because Mason Wan had gained the ability to see ghosts and had long-term contact with them, his body naturally adapted to withstand the yin energy.
The reason this ghost targeted Mason Wan was that he had enough time to drive Mason Wan’s soul out and completely take over his body. Normally, people possessed by ghosts can’t last that long.
Such cases are extremely rare, but records show that some ghosts, unable to endure life in the ghost world, choose to blend into the living world. However, daylight is torturous for them.
So some ghosts possess people with weak constitutions to avoid the sun, drifting from place to place, seeking somewhere to settle down.
But this ghost was different. He wanted a complete body, so he possessed Mason Wan for so long, carefully restraining himself to avoid damaging Mason Wan’s body.
After being possessed for so long, part of Mason Wan’s soul had already separated from his body, likely wandering to places where ghosts gather. The difficult part was that finding Mason Wan’s soul would be very challenging.
"Liu Tao, get that guy to help."
Hugh Thompson spoke, and then a young man named Liu Tao from the Ghost Burial Squad stepped forward, holding a small jar. With a bang, he opened it, and a pale female ghost appeared. However, what surprised me was that in this part of the memory, her appearance was completely unclear.
Ghosts have their own language. The ghost released by Liu Tao started communicating with the ghost inside Mason Wan. After a while, Liu Tao nodded and reported to everyone.
This ghost was kept by someone, but after that person’s health failed, he planned to sink the ghost into a mud pit, trapping it forever.
In the end, realizing the danger, the ghost broke through the sealing talisman, skinned the man who had kept him for years and used him for many things, and killed him—the victim in that strange case. In his terror, the man’s soul left his body before he died, and he even called the police. Since it was daylight, the ghost thought the man was still alive and left.
The reason this ghost targeted Mason Wan was that he received the cornea of the man who kept the ghost and thus carried his aura. The ghost always believed the man he hated was still alive, so he followed the aura and eventually possessed Mason Wan, intending to take over his body completely.
