"Are we just going to let them leave like this?"
I asked, glancing at the room where Rachel Lan was staying—the lights were already out, the entire village swallowed by darkness. I looked at John Chou beside me; he was silent, lost in thought.
I kept my eyes on the shoreline, planning to question John Chou once he came up with a solution. I had no idea what Rachel Lan said to those two, but one thing was certain—the situation was all wrong. Peace had almost returned to the Living World, with most ghosts captured and sent directly to the Underworld Court.
The Underworld Court is still mobilizing its forces. Though it's just a guess, I suspect they've detained a significant number of spirits, pressing them into service as troops.
The Living World's troubles, which once plagued the Underworld Court, have now been resolved. The Buddhist and Taoist Orders have benefited greatly from all this, and they're actively helping the Burial Ghost Squad. Once those two sects start moving, the rest should follow.
But this won't last long. Once war breaks out, everything will descend into chaos. I have no idea what the point of all this is—especially the motives of the Immortality Society.
We've already been discovered here. If they really want to force their way in, it's not impossible. The Blood Jade in my hand, plus the two instincts inside Rachel Lan—these are exactly what the Immortality Society wants.
The more I thought about it, the more wrong it felt. I turned to John Chou.
"John Chou, move Rachel Lan somewhere else."
As I spoke, John Chou finally looked at me and shook his head.
