How Could Anything Happen to Her

Evans Manor.

Lily Evans lay on the bed with her eyes tightly shut, her breathing faint as a thread. Beside her, Margaret Evans wept so much her eyes were swollen.

Arthur Evans politely invited the doctor out and asked, "Doctor, how is my niece doing?"

The doctor stroked his beard and shook his head, "She was already frail, and now after falling into the water in the dead of winter, I'm afraid she won't make it. Unless... you have a thousand-year-old ginseng, only then could she be saved."

"Doctor, money is no object! Use whatever good medicine you have!" Arthur Evans said eagerly upon hearing there was still hope.

But the doctor shook his head again, "Mr. Evans, it's not that I won't use medicine, but a thousand-year-old ginseng is a rare treasure. In a small place like Clearwater City, there simply isn't any! Now with the roads blocked by snow, it's impossible to go elsewhere to buy one, alas..."

"How could this happen..." Arthur Evans staggered and collapsed onto a chair, gripping its back tightly. He called in Eugene Jr. and said, "Go to the Li residence and ask if Mr. Li Yanhao has a thousand-year-old ginseng at home."

Eugene Jr. took the order and braved the wind and snow, riding off on horseback.

Belle came in with a bowl of medicine, but it wasn't for Lily Evans—at this point, Lily couldn't take any medicine anymore.

"Sir, you should drink this medicine. That day you jumped into the icy river to save Madam, and then took her to every clinic in town seeking help. These days you've watched over her day and night—no matter how strong you are, you can't keep going like this." Belle handed the bowl to Lucky, her eyes filled with worry as she saw the abnormal flush on Lucky's face.

Lucky gulped down the medicine in one go and refused to leave Lily Evans's side.

"Oh my, Lucky, your forehead is burning up! Drink the medicine and go get some rest, don't keep watch here—we're all here for her." Margaret Evans noticed Lucky's flushed face and, after feeling his forehead, was startled by the fever. She suddenly remembered that not only did Lily fall into the river that day, but Lucky also jumped in to save her. Thankfully, Lucky was strong and didn't end up as sick as Lily, who was now barely clinging to life.

"Mom, I'm not leaving. I want to stay with my wife!" Lucky stubbornly shook his head, clutching Lily's hand tightly.

Margaret Evans knew how close her daughter and son-in-law were, and that Lucky couldn't bear to leave Lily. She could only ask Belle to keep making medicine for Lucky, lest one recover and the other fall ill.

Lawrence Manor.

Leonard Li was enjoying his tea when he heard Mr. Warren had sent someone over. He quickly invited the guest inside, grinning, "Did Mrs. Evans make another delicious dish and invite me over again?"

Eugene Jr. arrived, sweating with anxiety, and explained Lily Evans's situation.

"What? How could she..." Leonard Li's teacup clattered to the floor as all trace of his usual carefree attitude vanished. "Steward! Steward! Do we have any thousand-year-old ginseng in the house?"

The steward shook his head, "Young Master, we don't have any thousand-year-old ginseng in the house."

Leonard Li exclaimed, "If we don't have any, then get some! We must get the thousand-year-old ginseng!"

With that, Leonard Li rushed out of the house, the steward chasing after him. "Young Master! Young Master! The snowstorm is so fierce—where are you going?"

Galloping through the snow, Leonard Li was frantic, his mind filled with thoughts of that clever, headstrong little chef. He had just discovered that Lily Evans and Lucky weren't truly married, and hadn't yet brought her home to cook for him forever. How could anything happen to her now!

Eugene Jr. rode after Leonard Li, watching the young master recklessly spur his horse through the blizzard. Careful and observant as ever, Eugene Jr. couldn't help but wonder: Leonard Li was so anxious about Miss Lily—was their relationship really just a simple business partnership?
