A Teenager's Troubles
Lily Evans asked Alexander Hayes to write the appointment letter, and had Neil Zhao help prepare for taking over the merchant guild. She then said to Arthur Evans, "Uncle Arthur, Neil Zhao may be from the Zhao family, but he’s already pledged loyalty to the Palace of Qin. He’s spent years in the guild and knows the ins and outs. In the future, you can rely on Neil Zhao for help."
And just like that, the matter of the new guild leader was happily settled. Arthur Evans and Mrs. Charlotte Evans were brimming with fighting spirit, ready to dive into their new venture.
Suddenly, Lily Evans realized she hadn’t seen Leonard Yuan in quite a while.
"What has Leonard been up to lately? Why hasn’t he left the house? Is he still buried in his books at home?" Lily Evans asked, her voice tinged with playful concern.
Mrs. Charlotte Evans sighed, her expression troubled. "Ever since Leonard set out from the capital, he’s been gloomy. He barely touches his books and seems lost in thought. A few days ago, I couldn’t stand seeing him so down, so I asked if he still wanted to pursue the imperial exams. If not, he could join us in the family business. But Leonard just looked confused. Sigh, sons grow up and their hearts become mysteries. Your uncle and I can’t figure out what Leonard is thinking. He used to be set on earning his title and bringing honor to the family, but now, I have no idea what his plans are."
Lily Evans pressed her lips together. She and Alexander Hayes had already fallen out with the imperial court, so she would never let Leonard Yuan go to the capital for the exams and become an official. Otherwise, it would be like sending a hostage for Leonard Li to exploit.
Leonard Yuan was a young man with strong opinions and big dreams. He’d always aspired to win honors and bring glory to his family, but now that path was completely blocked. No wonder he was feeling lost and down—who wouldn’t be?
"Leonard can’t pursue the exams anymore. In the end, it’s because of me and Alexander," Lily Evans sighed. "I’ll go see Leonard and have a talk with him."
Mrs. Charlotte Evans brightened instantly. "Lily, it’s wonderful if you can talk to Leonard! You’re the sister he’s closest to, and the teacher he respects most. He’ll definitely listen to you."
