Sentimentality in the Face of Life and Death

12/2/2025

Sophie White looked as if she was hanging onto life by a thread, kept alive only by a miracle pill—she could die at any moment.

Without hesitation, Alexander Hayes said, "Don't be afraid. I'll take you to the Lin Family of Healers right now—they will cure you!"

"Mmm..." Sophie seemed extremely weak, closing her eyes as she whispered, "If I die, please have Your Highness cremate me and scatter my ashes in the river. After all, my family... none of us have a proper resting place anymore..."

Alexander Hayes heard Sophie's words and remembered the loyal White Family, who died far from home and whose bodies were left for the wild dogs. His heart twisted in pain.

"I won't let you die! If you do, how could I ever face your father in the afterlife?" Alexander Hayes couldn't care about anything else—he scooped Sophie into his arms, used his qinggong, and raced toward the Lin Family of Healers as fast as he could.

In the bustling marketplace, people were shocked to see His Highness Prince Alexander Hayes, usually so aloof, dashing through the crowd at lightning speed with a pale, frail person in his arms.

Prince Alexander Hayes's face was full of anxiety, clearly deeply concerned about the person in his arms.

The crowd erupted: Who on earth could make the mighty war god himself so frantic, even carrying them personally through the streets!?

Alexander Hayes carried Sophie White, sprinting straight into the Lin Residence and barging into Dr. Rowan Lin's courtyard.

"Father, please save her!" Alexander Hayes placed Sophie White on the couch in Dr. Rowan Lin's dispensary.

Sophie White's wound was on her abdomen, so Dr. Rowan Lin had to undo her clothing to examine it.

Just as Dr. Rowan Lin was about to unfasten Sophie White's clothes, she suddenly reached out and grabbed his wrist, whispering, "No... you mustn't... absolutely not..."

"Why not? You're on the verge of dying, yet you won't let anyone treat your wound?" Dr. Rowan Lin frowned.

"Because... because..." Sophie White hesitated, struggling to lift her head and look at Alexander Hayes.

Seeing that the truth couldn't be hidden any longer, Alexander Hayes quietly said to Dr. Rowan Lin, "Father, Sophie... she's a woman..."

"A girl!?" Dr. Rowan Lin was stunned, and looked Sophie White over again. "Your Highness, judging by this person's attire, she should be your personal Deputy in the barracks. How is your Deputy a woman?"

Alexander Hayes replied, "Father, it's a long story. Let's save Sophie first, then I'll explain."

Then Alexander Hayes turned to Sophie White and said, "Sophie, a healer doesn't care about gender. Your situation is critical—don't worry about such things. Let Dr. Lin examine your wound. If he doesn't see it, how can he treat you?"

But Sophie White shook her head. "General, when I was injured at the border outpost, the doctor wanted to examine me, and I refused. After all, men and women are different. How could I let a man look at such a private place on my abdomen?"

"Sophie, you're usually so unconcerned with propriety, but now that your life is at stake, you're being sentimental!" Alexander Hayes looked at Sophie White's increasingly pale face and said anxiously, "If you keep being stubborn, you'll die!"

Sophie White's wound was on her abdomen, so Dr. Rowan Lin had to undo her clothing to examine it.
