A Daughter of the Yang Family Grows Up—A Shut-in Emerges (Part 2)

The—Second—Day! (Dramatic Pause)

A fancy, high-end hotel. A fancy private dining room. A fancy round banquet table. A bunch of equally fancy chairs. Everything here screams luxury—at least, it looks way fancier than what your average working stiff is used to.

Of course, compared to the hotels owned by Eternal Night Group, this place is downright shabby. It’s all flash and no substance—just a thin layer of luxury on the outside, but nothing special underneath. Still, for a small city like Jiping, this is about as high-end as you’re gonna get.

Seated in this fancy private room are seven people. Let’s take a look at them, one by one. Starting with the head of the table: Old Teacher John Yang, then the previous queen Susan Morrow, the new queen Jill Young, and right next to Jill is Aunt Yang Shu.

Yang Shu sits close to Jill, carefully inspecting her from every possible angle. As a super classy beauty, Aunt Yang’s gaze isn’t exactly obvious, but it’s definitely thorough. She’s been at it for a while now, scanning Jill from head to toe, leaving no corner unchecked—and she’s nowhere near done yet.

Across from them, on John Yang’s other side, sits the current chief of Jiping City Police—and Jill’s second uncle—Quentin Yang.

Quentin’s a fair bit younger than John, and they actually look pretty similar. He’s got a bit of a belly and that faint air of authority you get from years on the job. But being John’s little brother, even though he’s a veteran cop, Quentin still carries that scholarly vibe you’d expect from a teacher.

All three siblings from the previous generation of the Yang family share that same vibe, and it’s been passed down to John too. Sometimes, family really is family—put these four Yangs together and nobody would ever guess they’re from two different households.

Next to Quentin sits his wife, Jill’s aunt-in-law—a middle-aged woman who’s not exactly a beauty queen. She’s a bit on the plump side, looking pretty much like any other lady you’d see dancing in the city square.

Back when Quentin got married, things weren’t like in John’s day. In John’s time, Grandpa and Grandma were fine letting their gorgeous daughter marry a poor but honest guy who’d step up when needed. But Quentin wasn’t so lucky—a penniless orphan could only hope for a match with someone from a similar background.

Luckily, even if Aunt isn’t much to look at, she’s got a great personality. She’s sensible, knows how to handle big stuff, and totally boosts her husband’s luck. Quentin wouldn’t have made it to police chief without his smart, supportive wife backing him up.

"Alright, food’s all here—let me start the first toast!" Old Teacher John Yang, as head of the family, raises his glass: "Today’s theme is simple: welcoming our kid home."

That’s right—today is Jill Young’s second day home, and it’s the official day for her to reveal her identity to the entire Yang family and announce her return. Jill had already given her parents a heads-up, so everything was well prepared and everyone who mattered showed up.

"Yep, welcoming our kid home!" Quentin Yang is visibly excited: "As her uncle, I’m so pumped I can’t even find the words. All I’ll say is—welcome back, welcome back! Here, I’ll drink first!"

Gulp! Quentin throws back a big glass of booze, not about to let anyone stop him.

"Haha, way to go, Uncle! I’ll join in!" With the mood so high, Jill Young isn’t about to back down either—she tilts her head and downs a big glass of Maotai* (a famous Chinese liquor), no problem. The way she drinks has everyone’s eyebrows twitching, but the adults here know Jill’s situation well enough, so it’s not a shock. When it comes to drinking, even if you went round after round, this whole crew couldn’t outdrink her.

*Maotai: A renowned Chinese baijiu (distilled spirit), often served at important banquets and celebrations.

Okay, so the timeline just jumped a day, but the plot skipped a whole lot more. Since readers might be confused, let’s rewind to yesterday and see what went down.

Yesterday, Jill Young already met up with Uncle Quentin and Aunt Yang Shu. The four old Yangs plus Queen Susan spent the whole afternoon in a private meeting, talking over everything. Jill pretty much won over all the elders.

First up was proving she wasn’t some random scammer popping out of nowhere. In Thai soap operas, this would be a nightmare, but for this family, it’s actually super easy.

Susan Morrow remembers everything about her pregnancy and childbirth crystal clear, and Quentin knows all about the mysterious missing girl. As police chief, he’s got the inside scoop—and he’s not clueless about this whole "Chosen One" business, either.

Yang Shu was still a kid back then and doesn’t remember much about the twins’ birth. But she lived through the Shanghai Corpse King incident herself, so she’s way more open to supernatural stuff—and she gets Jill Young’s situation better than most.

You can’t fake the real thing, and you can’t make the fake real. No need to go into the nitty-gritty—bottom line, Jill Young got her uncle and aunt to understand three key things about her.

First: She’s definitely her parents’ biological daughter—and she’s a Chosen One. She crossed over from the womb, spent twenty-six years away, and now she’s back.

Second: She and Jack Young share memories. Everything that happened in the past, she remembers crystal clear. If you don’t believe it, she’ll play a tune for Aunt Yang Shu or spill some of Uncle Quentin’s embarrassing stories—totally authentic, so nobody needs to introduce themselves again.

Third: She’s got some assets out of town, and she came back to take everyone with her. You all know how things are these days—if something goes down, she can protect you. Whether you go or not is up to you, but she hopes everyone thinks it over carefully.

Just those few points sparked a whole afternoon of talk—if you stretched it out, it’d fill several chapters. So, to save space, everything’s packed into those three words: "Day—Two."

Jill figures her elders probably spent all night tossing and turning, unable to sleep. At least Aunt Yang Shu, who was staying over at Jill’s place, totally didn’t get any rest—in fact, she snuck into Jill’s room in her pajamas, clutching a pillow.

She grabbed Jill’s hand, stared and sighed, stroked her platinum hair, hummed tunes together, chatted non-stop—like she was trying to confirm something. At three in the morning, she finally dozed off in Jill’s arms, mumbling, "You are him... but not him..." as she drifted away.

Next morning, Jill wakes up to find Aunt Yang Shu wrapped around her like an octopus, sleeping soundly—and Jill can’t help but laugh and cry at the sight.

The place is overflowing with joy—even Cang Cang is squeaking up a storm. It’s been ages since the hamster saw Jill Young, and it’s so excited it’s practically a blur, zooming all over the house. It spent the whole night cleaning every nook and cranny, and when Jill finally stepped on it, the little guy looked like it’d just won the highest honor—so happy it could burst.

So, here’s the scene: a fancy room, seven people, and one mutant hamster partying it up. Everyone’s having a blast! Cang Cang keeps diving into the wine glasses, soaking and sipping like it’s a hot spring—having the time of its life. Wait, seven people? Let me count again… Something doesn’t add up—the numbers are a little off…

Jill Young keeps one eye on her, watching every move.

Look—she’s opening her mouth!

Ah—nom nom nom, gulp!

Well, what do you know—if you’re not family, you don’t get in the door! That eating habit is totally a Yang Family classic. Details matter, and this one says it all: I, Yang Sherlock, have cracked the case of the apple-headed girl—she’s none other than Uncle Quentin’s daughter, Kathy Yang!

Wow, I did not see that coming—the tiny bean from back then has grown into such a young lady. I’m honestly so proud! But time flies, people change. Just look at my hair—so quickly, it’s turned white. Out with the old, in with the new. Let me eat some steak to calm my nerves.

Ah—nom nom nom, gulp!

Huh?! Why do I suddenly feel two sharp gazes shooting my way? Who is it?!

Ding! Someone texted me? Jill Young pulls out her phone and looks down. The message reads, clear as day: [You can fool everyone else, but you can’t fool me. The Force has already told me everything—you’re not some long-lost cousin at all!]

Whoosh—Jill Young looks up to see the apple-headed girl across the table, staring straight at her while her fingers tap away under the table. She’s got that cool, all-knowing look, and she’s so committed to her intimidating expression that she can’t even check her screen—she’s texting blind.

Ding! Another text comes in.

[Details matter, details are everything, and there’s only one truth—I, Yang Sherlock, have seen through your real identity! Yep, the Force has told me everything—I’ve seen through your secret!]

Huh?! Jill Young glares back, stunned—seen through my secret?!

The apple-headed girl’s nose twitches smugly, but seeing Jill’s weird look, she starts to get nervous, glances down at her phone, and instantly turns beet red. Forgetting her cool, she quickly starts texting again, fingers flying.

[Oops, not boobs—secret! I’ve seen through your secret!]

The slightly frazzled girl can’t help but smack her forehead, her blush reaching all the way to her ears. But she quickly rallies, clears her throat, and with a do-or-die attitude, starts furiously texting again. She finally looks up and shoots Jill a glare, trying to act tough.

[Anyway, you fraud—if you don’t want me to expose your secret—you’ll do as I say! When the sun rises tomorrow, come to the spot I pick. If you behave and cooperate, maybe I’ll go easy on you. But if you don’t… heh heh heh… just wait and see! Evil laugh, evil laugh, evil laugh… Think about it! ]

Nom—the apple-headed girl eats another orange slice to calm down, looking totally sure of herself.
