Sean Kerr Pursues Rona Muir in Capital City
"Alright, let's not think about this for now. Go back and talk things over with Miles Gu, and listen to what he has to say before making any decisions." Rona Muir reached out and patted Cici's shoulder, offering her advice.
Cici nodded.
At that moment, a voice called from behind: "Rona, Cici!"
Both Cici and Rona Muir turned around at the same time.
When Rona Muir saw who it was, her face went pale, like she'd seen a ghost. She blurted out, "What is he doing here?"
Cici looked just as stunned. "I'm shocked too! This is a cultural exchange, not a trade show!"
The person who left both Rona Muir and Cici looking utterly stunned, as if they'd seen a ghost, was none other than Sean Kerr.
Cici glanced at Sean Kerr, thin and anxious as he rushed toward them. Instinctively, she turned to leave.
But Rona Muir wasn't about to let her get away.
She reached out and grabbed Cici's wrist. "Why keep the fun to yourself? Let's all hear what he has to say!"
Cici couldn't break free, so she could only smile politely at Sean Kerr. "What brings you here? This is a cultural exchange—usually only people from the Ministry of Culture or the Cultural Office are interested in this sort of thing, right?"
"I came here just to find you two," Sean Kerr replied without hesitation. "The opening ceremony is over, and you don't have anything else scheduled, right? Let me treat you to dinner!"
He must really mean it—inviting people all the way to Capital City for a meal!
"Rona, Cici has gotten her memory back. Are you still not willing to forgive me?" Sean Kerr pleaded with Rona Muir. "Even in court, good behavior gets you a reduced sentence! Haven't I behaved well enough?"
Cici nudged Rona Muir. "Forget it, you two should go eat by yourselves. I still have..."
"No way. We're all going together," Rona Muir insisted—she was definitely not letting Cici escape! If we're eating, we all eat together; if not, then no one eats!
Seeing that Rona Muir was finally willing to give him a chance, Sean Kerr was overjoyed. "Great, let's all go together!"
Cici greeted Mr. Yun, then left the venue with Sean Kerr and Rona Muir.
It was Cici's first time in Capital City, so she kept quiet the whole time and just followed their lead.
Sean Kerr drove Cici and Rona Muir, winding through the streets until they reached a lively spot.
Well, to Cecilia Gu, it seems like everywhere is lively...
As soon as the three sat down, Sean Kerr got straight to the point: "Rona, I've taken care of everything. Please give me another chance."
Cecilia Gu just hugged her water cup and played the background character.
Rona Muir frowned. "Sean Kerr, haven't you thought about doing anything else these past few years besides this? Didn't I make myself clear enough?"
"I know, but I've also told you—I won't give up," Sean Kerr said seriously, looking at Rona Muir. "I didn't know how to cherish you before, didn't see how wonderful you are, and almost missed my chance! But now I've learned, and I won't let my family's troubles hurt you again!"
Rona Muir sighed. "That's not what I care about. It's your parents' values—they're completely different from mine. I don't want to be someone who just depends on others. I want to build my own career and chase my own dreams. Let me ask you something: If we were together, after we got married, would I still be allowed to run my company? Would we have to have kids right away? And if we did, would I have to be a housewife, staying home every day? Sean Kerr, I've really thought about our relationship. Your persistence moves me, but I'm not eighteen anymore—I see things differently now. I won't be a housewife. The Kerr Family is so prestigious—would they let their daughter-in-law be out in the world, working?"
Sean Kerr was just about to speak.
But Rona Muir continued, "Even if you agree, would your family? I know your family never really liked me. Your mom's words to me were always so condescending. I don't want to embarrass myself, so I've kept rejecting you. You're doing great now, you've taken over the whole Kerr Family, but can you really call the shots in your family? Let me give you a simple example: The Yin Family lets Cecilia Gu be a translator, lets her run a company, and doesn't force her to get married. Can the Kerr Family do that?"
Cecilia Gu, the background character, felt so innocent!
"Sean Kerr, we're not kids anymore. We need to be mature about our feelings," Rona Muir said earnestly. "Your family only accepts me because of your pressure—that's not real acceptance. I may not come from a wealthy family, but I have my pride. Look at Cici—her old Gu Family or the Yun Family now, neither compares to the Yin Family, but the Yin Family truly accepts her."
Cecilia Gu nodded. "That's true."
"If we work hard enough, we can change anything," Sean Kerr replied, sounding a little down.
He really had put in a lot of effort.
He'd gone from a young master who didn't care about family business and just wanted to run a small company for fun, to who he was now—all for her.
But why did she have to dismiss all his efforts and hard work?
"Some things can't be changed just by working hard. Take Cici and Max Mo, for example—Max Mo likes Cici enough, right? But Cici has never liked him back," Rona Muir said, using Cecilia Gu as an example.
Cecilia Gu felt awkward—was her role as the background character just to be used as an example?
Rona Muir quickly wrapped things up. "Sean Kerr, I won't deny that I have feelings for you. But until I've grown enough to stand shoulder to shoulder with you, I won't say yes. No matter how hard you try, it's the same—I want equality, not charity."

Cecilia Gu nodded along. "That's true, too."
Sean Kerr's eyes dimmed. "I'll wait for you!"
"You're not that young anymore, and your family might not want to wait. Sean Kerr, just let it go," Rona Muir said calmly. "Maybe your parents are right. If you listen to them, your future will be smooth. With your background, you could have your pick of socialites across the country. You wouldn't have any trouble, and you wouldn't have to fight your family."
"No matter what you say, I won't give up easily," Sean Kerr said through gritted teeth. "Fine, I'll wait for you to grow, I'll wait until you can stand shoulder to shoulder with me! I'll see what excuse you come up with then!"
"Alright then." Rona Muir smiled brightly.
Rona Muir's smile dazzled Sean Kerr.
After dinner, on the way back, Cecilia Gu couldn't help but ask Rona Muir, "So what do you really think of him?"
"It's just like that," Rona Muir sighed. "You know how bad his family is toward me."
Cecilia Gu looked at Rona Muir, speechless. "So you plan to keep stringing him along?"
"Exactly," Rona Muir answered frankly. "I always planned to drag this out, wait until he realizes how boring it all is and gives up on his own. Wouldn't that make everyone happy?"
"Are you saying you have no feelings for him at all?" Cecilia Gu snorted. "None of those guys you met on blind dates lasted, did they?"
"Hey, don't expose me!" Rona Muir pinched Cecilia Gu's cheek. "At least let me save some face!"
Cecilia Gu grinned. "Because I know you best!"
The two were still messing around when Rona Muir's phone suddenly rang—it was an unfamiliar number.
Rona Muir answered casually, but the moment the caller spoke, her face changed instantly!
Cecilia Gu watched Rona Muir curiously as Rona switched the call to speaker.
A commanding voice came through the phone: "Miss Muir, I heard Sean Kerr went to Capital City. Did he come to see you?"
Rona Muir sighed. "Mrs. Kerr, why are you asking me?"
The call was from Sean Kerr's own mother!
Cecilia Gu still remembered that woman—always so serious, even her smile had to fit noble etiquette.
Sean Kerr's mother had personally called!
"I've been doing what you asked for ages now. I've always avoided Sean Kerr and never reached out to him," Rona Muir replied patiently. "I really don't know what else I can do! Do you want me to go find a man and get married right now to satisfy you?"
Mrs. Kerr's voice was still cold. "Miss Muir, you were doing fine abroad. Why did you suddenly come back to China?"
Oh, come on!
Rona Muir almost lost her temper!
Mrs. Kerr really is meddlesome, worrying about things that have nothing to do with her!
She'd already gone out of her way to avoid him, and yet Mrs. Kerr still thought it wasn't enough?
"Sorry, Mrs. Kerr. Your son goes where he wants—I'm not responsible for keeping an eye on him," Rona Muir replied politely but distantly. "I'll keep my promise to you and continue to stay away from him!"
Mrs. Kerr was annoyed by Rona Muir's response.
After a moment, Mrs. Kerr continued, "Since you're all in Capital City, that's fine. I'll be heading there in a few days myself—the daughter of the Finance Office is having a birthday, and many people will be invited. The Kerr Family plans to use the occasion to officially announce her engagement to Sean Kerr... I hope you'll attend, Miss Muir."
"Alright, if I'm free, I'll definitely come. I'll bring my most sincere blessings and gifts. Now I'll let you get back to searching for your son. Goodbye." Rona Muir hung up after saying this.
Cecilia Gu stood by, stunned. "Didn't Sean Kerr say he'd settled things with his family? This doesn't look settled at all!"
"Oh? Maybe it's because during New Year's I made a show of defiance to his family, and that made them all dislike me," Rona Muir said, looking unconcerned.
