Divination Needs the Help of a Noble Patron
Raindrops pelted her body. At first, Serena Feng felt pain, but gradually she went numb. Now she felt only cold—bone-deep, soul-chilling cold.
Her mind grew foggy. Serena Feng had no idea how long she’d been running, or even where she was—she just knew she had to keep running for her life, never letting those behind her catch up.
Serena Feng sensed something was wrong. She pinched herself hard at the waist, but it barely helped.
"This is bad. My condition isn’t looking good—I’m not sure I can hold out until I reach the Capital." Unease gnawed at Serena Feng. For a moment, her thoughts were crystal clear, but her body refused to obey.
Serena Feng didn’t realize her weakness wasn’t just from the rain—it was because she was wounded.
There was a finger-length gash at Serena Feng’s waist. It hadn’t hit any vital organs, but it had nicked a blood vessel. Blood streamed down her horse’s back the whole way—how much, she didn’t know. Serena noticed none of it. All she knew was to keep running; as long as she got inside the city, she’d be safe.
Serena Feng had no idea how long she’d been running. All she knew was that her vision grew darker and blurrier—she thought she glimpsed the city gate ahead, but just as she tried to spur herself for a final dash, her strength gave out and she collapsed from her horse.
She thought that fall would leave her crippled—or at least skinned half to death—but someone caught her. Serena jolted awake for a split second, looked up, and saw a familiar face she never expected: "Felix Fuller? What are you doing here?"
"If I hadn’t come, you’d be dead." Felix Fuller was strong, but holding up both Serena Feng and Dr. Marcus Guile was a strain. He signaled to the soldiers behind him, and someone immediately stepped up to untie the ropes and lift Dr. Guile into the carriage first.
Seeing Serena Feng covered in blood, Felix Fuller knew there must have been a fierce battle ahead. He immediately ordered his men to follow the hoofprints and see if they could help.
"Yes, sir." The men Felix Fuller brought were Bloodcloak Guards—now bound to him and following his every order.
Felix Fuller didn’t go to the battle site. Instead, he escorted Serena Feng and Dr. Marcus Guile back. As soon as they entered the city, someone asked, "Sir, should we send word to Ninth Prince Manor?"
Everyone knew about Serena Feng’s close relationship with Prince Nolan. If Felix Fuller saved her, he’d naturally want Prince Nolan to know—so he could collect a favor from him.
This subordinate was clever—but misread the situation. Felix Fuller had no intention of letting Prince Nolan steal his credit. With a cold face, he said, "No need," and ordered his men to keep their mouths shut. If anyone blabbed and brought disaster, even he couldn’t protect them.
Serena Feng had left the manor perfectly fine, but now she was carried back drenched in blood. Feng Manor erupted in panic—doctors were summoned, water was boiled, clothes were changed—everyone terrified something would happen to Serena or Dr. Marcus Guile.
With all this chaos, no one had time to notify Ninth Prince Manor—or to properly host Felix Fuller. Felix didn’t mind and didn’t leave; he simply sat quietly in the flower hall at Feng Manor.
He saw that Serena Feng’s wounds weren’t life-threatening, and figured she’d wake up tonight. As her savior, of course he wanted to show his face—ideally, to earn her deep gratitude and a promise of a hefty reward.
Anonymous good deeds weren’t Felix Fuller’s style.
Feng Manor was in total chaos. After an hour, Serena Feng and Dr. Marcus Guile were finally stabilized. Only then did the butler remember Felix Fuller waiting in the flower hall—but just as he went to thank him and see him off, Left Shore, Beanie, and the Valley Master arrived.
Left Shore and Beanie were covered in blood, and several guards were wounded. The Valley Master was unhurt, but his age and the drenching rain had left him thoroughly spent.
So the chaos at Feng Manor started all over again. Felix Fuller couldn’t just sit and drink tea—he rolled up his sleeves and helped. By the time things calmed down, it was already past midnight and Serena Feng was still unconscious. Felix didn’t want to wait any longer, so he took his leave.
The butler thanked him profusely, saying that as soon as Serena Feng woke, he’d tell her—and when she recovered, she’d come thank Felix Fuller in person. Felix, of course, didn’t accept directly; he quickly demurred, insisting it was just a small favor.
Just as Felix Fuller was about to leave, Beanie—still sore from Left Shore’s beating—spoke up: "Lord Fuller, what made you suddenly leave the city? Are you like Serena, able to predict trouble and know exactly when we’d need rescuing?"
Felix Fuller’s timing was just too perfect—it made everyone wonder. Others kept their suspicions to themselves, but only Beanie dared to ask outright.
The butler was embarrassed, quickly shooting Beanie a look and smiling at Felix Fuller, trying to smooth things over: "Don’t mind him, Lord Fuller—Young Master Owen is just curious."
This kind of thing should be investigated discreetly. Asking outright is almost accusing your benefactor.
Felix Fuller smiled. "No harm done. Young Master Owen’s curiosity is natural, and yes, my arrival was awfully well-timed. But with my friendship with Serena, she’ll understand."
Felix Fuller took the out the butler offered—but Beanie wasn’t so easy to brush off. Ignoring Felix’s excuse, Beanie blinked his bright black eyes and pressed on: "What exactly will Serena understand? Even Prince Nolan didn’t make it in time, but you did. Lord Fuller, you’re not secretly tracking Serena, are you?"
If anyone else had said that, it would’ve sounded like an accusation. But coming from Beanie, it was pure curiosity. Felix Fuller knew Beanie had no filter, so he didn’t get angry—just smiled and said, "Why would I do that? What reason would I have to keep tabs on Serena?"
"Then why was it? Is there some secret you’re not telling?" Beanie pressed. Left Shore had told him Serena sensed danger and, with help from the Snow Wolves, rushed out in time to save them. But what about Felix Fuller?
How did Felix Fuller just happen to leave the city with so many men—right when they needed help?
Beanie couldn’t figure it out. Serena’s uncanny luck was one thing—but Felix Fuller couldn’t possibly have the same foresight. He kept pressing, determined to get an answer.
Beanie was the kind of person even Prince Nolan and Serena Feng were wary of. If he wanted answers, Felix Fuller couldn’t just brush him off. Felix glanced at Left Shore and the Valley Master and saw they were suspicious too—otherwise they wouldn’t let Beanie keep questioning him.
Felix Fuller was shrewd enough to know that if he didn’t give a reason tonight, these people would never trust him. He sighed and said helplessly, "The truth is, if I told you, you probably wouldn’t believe me."
"How do you know if you don’t tell us?" Beanie was even more curious now; Left Shore lifted his eyelids, waiting for an explanation.
Lord Fuller couldn’t possibly have Serena’s luck. Who else would go out in a rainstorm with a troop of men for no reason?
