Resistance Forces and the Guard Company
Inside Mesa City, in a nondescript residential house.
A group of people sat in a circle inside a room.
They were loosely led by a refined young man, the same one who had appeared outside Spring Moon Tavern earlier.
“Who would’ve thought, really, who would’ve thought—the Special Police actually arrested soldiers.” A gray-robed elder sighed.
“I heard it was the new minister, Landon Lu, who gave the order,” said another sharp-faced young man.
“Don’t be fooled by these crooks. This Lu guy just got here—he’s obviously trying to make a name for himself, so he’s putting on a show with the military.”
This time, the speaker was a handsome young man. His clothes were plain, but he radiated an air of wealth.
“I agree with Brother Fu’s analysis. Whether it’s the Special Police or the army, they’re all the same—none of them can be trusted.” The refined young man, Victor the Sixth Young Master, nodded.
“You flatter me, Sixth Young Master.”
Getting Victor’s agreement, Darren Fu looked quite pleased and gave him a respectful nod.
“Mr. Carter Cao’s assassination attempt failed. I wonder if he managed to escape safely?” Victor, the Sixth Young Master, said worriedly.
“No need to worry about Mr. Cao, Sixth Young Master. He’s incredibly skilled—even if the attempt failed, he’ll get away just fine.” Old Gan, the branch’s gray-robed financial manager, comforted him in a deep voice.
Victor sighed. “I hope so.”
“By the way, how are our moles in the Special Police doing?” Victor suddenly asked Old Gan.
“Sixth Young Master, we’ve already bribed over ten ordinary Special Police officers and one squad leader.” Old Gan said proudly.
“Good job, Old Gan!” Victor nodded with satisfaction. “What about the city government?”
“Darren Fu is handling the city government side.” Old Gan replied.
For a moment, Victor’s gaze fell on the handsome young man.
He said proudly, “Sixth Young Master, I’ve already infiltrated the Secretariat Office of city government. Right now, I’m working on becoming First Deputy Mayor Charles Wang’s personal secretary. Once I get that job, I’ll have access to all sorts of secrets.”
Everyone was visibly excited to hear this.
The next moment, Darren Fu looked troubled. “But smoothing things over and entertaining people costs money. If I want to become Charles Wang’s secretary, I’ll need some serious funds!”
“How much do you need?” Victor asked.
“At least this much.” Darren Fu held up five fingers.
Victor nodded. “Fifty thousand? Old Gan, you’re in charge of the Mesa City branch’s finances, right? Give Brother Fu fifty thousand later.”
Darren Fu interrupted, “Sixth Young Master, you misunderstood—it’s not fifty thousand, it’s five hundred thousand. That secretary job is way too important; there’s no way fifty thousand would be enough.”
“My mistake!” Victor nodded again, then turned to Old Gan. “Old Gan, can you come up with half a million?”
Old Gan gave a bitter smile. “Sixth Young Master, our branch has only been around for less than three months, and it’s made up of poor folks. Forget half a million—even fifty thousand, or ten thousand, I can’t get together.”
“How can you get anything done with no money?” Darren Fu’s face darkened.
“Yeah, Old Gan, see if you can think of something,” Victor added.
“Sigh...” Old Gan hesitated, but in the end said nothing.
Victor got anxious. “Old Gan, can you get the money for Brother Fu or not?”
“Sixth Young Master, I’ll do my best!”
Victor smiled. “I’ll leave it to you, Old Gan!”
Soon, Victor and his guards left with Darren Fu, leaving only Old Gan and the sharp-faced young man in the room.
The sharp-faced young man was indignant. “Old Gan, why’d you agree to give Darren Fu money?”
Old Gan sighed helplessly. “Victor himself asked—how could I say no?”
“Hmph, Victor too—how can he trust a playboy like Darren Fu?” the young man grumbled.
“Enough complaining. Hurry up and figure out a way to scrape together some money for Darren Fu!” Old Gan said, then got up and walked out.
...
96th Division Headquarters, Commander’s Office.
Guard Company Commander Warren Wen hurried in to report to Division Commander Harvey Guan: “Commander, the Mesa City Special Police have arrested Lieutenant Colonel Kevin Guan and Colonel Zane Zhou!” (Warren Wen: Guard Company commander; Harvey Guan: division commander of the 96th Division)
“What was the reason?” Harvey Guan asked in a deep voice.
Warren Wen replied, “During his mission, Lieutenant Colonel Guan caused some damage to a restaurant in Mesa City. The new Special Police Minister, Landon Lu, used it as a pretext to detain him. Then, when Colonel Zhou came to argue, that arrogant Landon Lu detained him too!”
After hearing Warren Wen’s report, Harvey Guan’s eyes grew more contemptuous. “Wen, are you telling the truth?”
Warren Wen answered without changing expression, “Commander, that’s what I was told, but the details still need to be confirmed.”
“Heh.”
Harvey Guan let out a strange laugh. “I know what kind of person Kevin Guan is—he wouldn’t just let a bunch of Special Police arrest him. And since when does Zane Zhou only talk things out? Wen, if you’re going to lie, at least make it believable!”
“Yes, Commander!” Warren Wen saluted, looking embarrassed.
But then Harvey Guan’s tone shifted. “Still, that Landon Lu is getting awfully bold—arresting Kevin Guan was one thing, but daring to detain Zane Zhou as well? He’s clearly got no respect for our 96th Division. Take the Guard Company and go bring back those two good-for-nothings. And as for Landon Lu, give him a little lesson if you have to.”
“Yes, Commander!”
Warren Wen saluted again before leaving the commander’s office, then called out through his communicator, “All Guard Company personnel, assemble at Training Field One!”
The 96th Division’s Guard Company was the strongest unit in the division—the minimum requirement for joining was War General-level strength, and each member was equipped with a Black Dragon battle mech worth fifty million credits.
On top of that, their weapons were all state-of-the-art.
This Guard Company could easily wipe out a regular army of ten thousand.
Soon, all one hundred members of the Guard Company had assembled at Training Field One.
Warren Wen barked, “By order of the commander, we’re heading to the Mesa City Special Police base to rescue Lieutenant Colonel Guan and Colonel Zhou. Everyone, grab your weapons and move out—the destination is Mesa City!”
As soon as he finished, the soldiers rushed to the military vehicles parked at the edge of the field. In an instant, a hundred vehicles roared to life, forming two columns and speeding straight toward Mesa City.
