Unprovoked Hostility

Capitalview Century Park Estate, Capitalview City.

This estate sits on the outer edge of Capitalview’s business district, right between the city center and the suburbs. Most residents here have some family wealth, but not enough to be truly rich.

Housing prices here are much higher than in Brightsea City, since Southcap Province is better located and more economically developed.

At nine in the morning, Lucy Lu stood at the estate gate, watching Evan Lin walk over. She hurried up to him, face full of concern: "Didn’t you say you’d call me when you arrived? I could’ve picked you up! Capitalview is huge, not like Minghai. What if you got lost?"

"If something really happened, how would I explain it to your mom?"

Last night, after teaching those scam artists a lesson, Evan wandered into the city with his backpack. By the time he arrived, dawn was breaking, so he found a bun shop and grabbed some breakfast.

When seven o’clock rolled around, Evan figured Lucy Lu would be up by then, so he called her, got the address, and headed over.

"I’m not a little kid anymore. Nothing’s going to happen to me."

Evan chuckled. Lucy Lu shot him a look, then led him into the estate.

"Capitalview is way bigger than Minghai. I know you’re not a kid, but you’re still new here, so of course I worry about you."

"These past few days, your Uncle Chen has been busy starting his new company and has been a bit overwhelmed, but he still asked a few days ago when you’d be arriving."

Lucy Lu knew Uncle Chen used to be a bit dissatisfied with Evan, but ever since Evan saved Haiyang Sheng, Uncle Chen’s attitude has completely changed.

Lillian’s already started at Capitalview First High School, and I’ve taken care of your transfer paperwork and prepared your new room. I promised your mom you wouldn’t suffer here, so if anything bothers you, just tell me.

Lucy Lu led Evan further inside.

The estate’s houses were well built, with leafy lanes and nice greenery.

Evan had meant to mention he was thinking of finding his own place, but Lucy Lu’s excited chatter left him no chance to get a word in. Seeing how happy she was, Evan decided to wait a few days before bringing it up, not wanting to rain on her parade.

"Hey, Lucy Lu, who’s this? Is he Lillian’s little brother?"

Just as they reached a villa, a woman dressed like a rich wife from the neighboring villa came out. She smiled warmly, but after her eyes paused on Evan for a moment and took in his plain clothes, a look of subtle disdain flashed across her face.

But when she looked at Lucy Lu, her eyes were much more enthusiastic.

"He’s my godson—no different from my own child," Lucy Lu replied with a smile when she saw the woman.

"Godson?" The neighbor woman was stunned for a moment, then looked Evan up and down again.

With those extra glances, her gaze seemed to grow subtly hostile, which left Evan a bit puzzled.

"Yeah, he transferred here with Lillian. He’ll be in senior year at Capitalview First High School," Lucy Lu nodded.

"Oh, so he’s living with you guys then?" The neighbor asked, sounding like she was fishing for information. Lucy Lu just nodded briskly, "Of course, he’s staying at our place."

"Alright then, you two get settled in. When you have time, I’ll have my kid Renren show Lillian around Capitalview—since you’ve been here a while and haven’t gone out much, right?" The woman spoke loudly in a fake-friendly way. "Anyway, I’ve got things to do, so I’ll head out now."

As she left, she shot Evan another look, this time with even more obvious hostility.

"She lives next door. Her husband runs a small company, so they’ve got a bit of money," Lucy Lu explained as they headed back to the villa.

Lucy Lu gave Evan a quick rundown about the neighbor’s family as they walked inside.

The villa in Capitalview wasn’t as spacious as the one in Brightsea Garden Court back in Brightsea City, but it was definitely brighter and had a more modern layout.

"Let me show you your room first. It’s at the end of the hallway on the second floor, right next to Lillian’s. The lighting’s pretty good, and if you have any questions or want to ask Lillian something, it’s super convenient."

As she spoke, Lucy Lu led Evan upstairs.

While she was saying all this, Evan keenly noticed something a little odd in Lucy Lu’s eyes—a hint of playfulness, even.

Once they reached the room, Lucy Lu opened the wardrobe to reveal several sets of brand-new clothes.

"Lillian and I picked these out for you when we went shopping a few days ago. You’re not a kid anymore—you’re a young man now, so you should learn to dress yourself up a bit."

"And over there, I got you a computer so you can look up whatever you need online. Also, since it’s a bit of a trek to Capitalview First High School, I’ll show you the way later."

The room’s window faced south, so the lighting was great, and everything was spotless—Evan figured Lucy Lu must clean it often.

Noticing all these details, Evan looked at Lucy Lu seriously. "Thank you, Auntie Lu. You really didn’t have to go to all this trouble."

"Trouble? Please! If I can make sure your daily life is sorted out, all you need to do is study hard—that’s the best way you could ever repay me, got it?" Lucy Lu smiled. "Go shower first. Lillian probably won’t be back for lunch, so do you want to report to school today or wait until tomorrow?"

"This afternoon," Evan said, straightforward as ever.

He didn’t have anything else going on, so he answered decisively.

After Lucy Lu left the room, Evan took a shower and changed into fresh clothes, feeling a lot more refreshed.

At lunchtime, Uncle Chen was out for business and Lillian ate at school, but Lucy Lu still cooked up a whole spread just for Evan.

In the afternoon, Lucy Lu wanted to take Evan to Capitalview First High School herself, but he insisted on going alone. She just handed him the transfer paperwork and told him to go straight to the academic affairs office to find the dean, who would take him to his new class.
