Escape for Life, William Must Not Die Here

2/14/2026

Serena Feng hurriedly cut William Wang Jinling off, afraid he'd say something to make things even more awkward: "It's fine, really, I get it, you don't need to explain."

The moment she finished speaking, Serena felt cold sweat break out all over her forehead.

Ugh, what kind of nonsense was she saying? Anyone listening in would probably think she was some kind of brazen woman.

Cough, cough... Embarrassed, Serena turned her face away, not daring to look at William, silently criticizing herself in her heart.

Serena Feng, you're really losing your edge—acting more and more like an ancient maiden. As a doctor, you've seen it all; in the modern world, you've seen plenty of naked men, and you never got shy or awkward about it. So why are you so useless now?

Serena knocked herself lightly on the head, reminding herself to stay calm and not act like some sheltered ancient noblewoman. Just think of her female colleagues in urology.

Those women see it every day, even have to touch and sometimes collect semen by hand. If everyone were as squeamish as her, no urology doctor or nurse would survive.

Though the carriage was pitch dark, William Wang Jinling could clearly sense all of Serena's little movements and frustrations.

Don't forget, William used to be blind, so he's far more sensitive than most in the dark. None of Serena's tiny actions escaped his notice. Still, he was decent enough not to tease her—he just quietly savored the moment.

The road to Clearwater Town wouldn't be lonely anymore; just recalling everything that happened tonight would keep him happy for a long time.

Inside the carriage, the atmosphere was warm; outside, blood was everywhere. Strangely enough, after all this fighting in the Imperial Capital, not a single patrolling guard had shown up.

Whoever was pulling the strings behind the scenes was truly ruthless.

It seemed the Emperor was growing more and more wary of the Wang Clan.

"Patriarch, the assassins are tough—and there’s more than one group. The hidden guards urge us to leave at once; it’s too dangerous here." The coachman's voice was more tense than before, showing how dire things had become.

William Wang Jinling immediately sobered up. He knew exactly how strong his own guards were, which meant the enemy was going all out. After a brief hesitation, he ordered: "Head for Prince Samuel Manor."

"Yes, sir." The coachman leapt onto the carriage and snapped the whip: "Hyah!"

The carriage broke through the assassins' encirclement and charged into the night...

"Chase them! Whoever kills the Wang Clan Patriarch will be richly rewarded!"

That cold voice pierced through the carriage, reaching both William and Serena's ears.

So, their real target was William Wang Jinling!

"Serena, I'm sorry for dragging you into this." William Wang Jinling felt deeply guilty. He'd meant to escort her home, but now he'd gotten Serena caught in a deadly trap.

"Don't talk about dragging me in or not. There’s more than one batch of assassins—some might be after me, too." She’d left the palace with William for his protection; now that trouble had found him, how could she blame him for it?

Just as Serena finished speaking, the coachman called out, "Patriarch, there’s another group of assassins ahead."

That meant at least three waves of killers were lying in wait for them tonight.

"We must be really popular," Serena joked bitterly, trying to lighten the mood.

"It's the Wang Clan's carriage, and Serena Feng is inside. The master’s order: leave no one alive." Once the assassins confirmed their targets, they surged forward to surround the carriage.

"Break through!" William knew that if they were stopped, death was the only outcome.

"Stop that carriage—don’t let them get away!" The assassins knew if William and Serena escaped, killing them next time would be much harder.

"Yes, sir." The coachman was tense, but not panicked—you could tell Wang Clan servants had seen their share of trouble.

The carriage jolted violently as it crashed about; inside, William and Serena were tossed around, both looking pale and grim.

"Looks like our luck tonight is pretty rotten," William said with a bitter smile. He'd only brought eight hidden guards, the standard for a Grand Heir—not nearly enough for a Patriarch. Tonight, it looked like they might not make it out.

"Definitely bad luck." Two unlucky people together wasn’t just double the trouble—the assassins kept stacking up, making things deadly. Serena reached down to her calf, pulled out a surgical scalpel, and with a few quick slashes, cut open her skirt and sleeves.

"You actually brought a dagger into the palace?" William stared at the cold gleam of Serena’s scalpel. "How did you even get it in?"

Palace entry checks were strict—eunuchs and maids would sweep a giant magnetite stone over your body, making it impossible to sneak in any iron weapon.

"I just brought it in like this." Serena waved the scalpel. Weapons here were all iron, and the palace used magnetite for checks—but her scalpel was high-chromium stainless steel, completely undetectable.

"Next time, I’ll prep two for you to carry for self-defense. Even in the palace, you’ll be safe." Serena didn’t explain too much; after removing the excess fabric, she bent down and opened the carriage door.

The carriage barreled ahead, scattering the assassins, but they were relentless, chasing close behind. This was a main avenue in the Imperial Capital, not the wilderness—the carriage couldn’t go far or fast.

"Jinling, there’s no way we’ll shake these assassins in the carriage. We need to ride."

"Alright, I’ll have the coachman stop." William knew Serena’s horsemanship was top-notch.

"No need—that’ll just waste time. We’ll jump out directly." The carriage was fast, but to Serena, it was nothing—she’d jumped from speeding cars before; this was child’s play.

"Jinling, jump!" Once she was ready, Serena grabbed William and leapt down.

As soon as they hit the ground, William stumbled forward from momentum—but found Serena pulling him along, keeping him running and on his feet.

They landed safely. Seeing William unharmed, Serena breathed a sigh of relief. She'd inherited her jump technique from her Demolition Team Captain, but... she'd never jumped with someone else before. On the battlefield, she was always the one being protected.

"Hurry—William and Serena have jumped off the carriage! Cut them off, leave no survivors!" The assassins, seeing their targets escape, went wild and charged after them.

"Patriarch, we can't hold out much longer!" Half of William's guards were blocking the first two waves, the rest were tangled with the third. Now, only two guards and the coachman were left at his side.

With so little fighting strength, protecting William was impossible.

"Split up, kill them! The Wang Clan Patriarch can't fight—just take out his guards and our job is done." The assassin leader knew how to play mind games; his words fired up his men even more.

William's guards were skilled, but even the best can't fight off dozens alone. Soon, they were drenched in blood.

Serena didn’t need to look back to know how fierce the battle was behind her. But she had no time to worry—survival came first. Otherwise, she’d be letting the guards sacrifice themselves for nothing.

"Jinling, I'm going to jump onto a horse. You keep running, don’t stop." Serena let go of William, regulated her breathing, and matched her pace to the horse—ready to vault up in one smooth motion...
