Chapter 125: Spatial Relic

Soth thought bitterly, I’m so damn wronged this time…

After so many years in Seaview City, how could Soth not know the relationship between the Sage’s Spire and the Ashen Tower? They’re mortal enemies, real ones—the kind whose centuries of fighting could fill half of Venomfog Gorge with corpses. Soth wasn’t an idiot; why would he ever mess with the Ashen Tower?

This time, I was just doing a little favor…

This morning, a Grand Mage from the Ashen Tower came looking for Soth, claiming someone had stolen an important Spatial Relic and was now hiding deep in Venomfog Gorge. He wanted the Viper’s Nest to flush the thief out.

Soth figured, you can’t afford to offend the Ashen Tower either. They’re one of the two biggest mage factions in the kingdom’s east, every bit as powerful as the Sage’s Spire. Besides, it was just a quick favor—kick the thief out, send the Grand Mage packing. So Soth agreed without hesitation.

And then…

And then, damn it, Archmage Leon Merlin caught me red-handed.

Just thinking about it made Soth want to spit at his idiot underlings. Seriously, are you all brain-dead? Venomfog Gorge is huge—why did you have to come here of all places…

Now look what’s happened—the walking disaster I finally got rid of refuses to leave!

Of course, Soth couldn’t say a word about it…

What else could he do? Go tell Archmage Leon Merlin, ‘Sorry, but a Grand Mage from the Ashen Tower will be dropping by soon, and it might be awkward if you two meet. Maybe you should leave first?’

Even if you gave Soth ten times the courage, he wouldn’t dare say that.

“Ha… ha… haha. Archmage Leon Merlin, it’s truly an honor for the Viper’s Nest to have you stay. How about coming to my cabin for a drink? I’ve got a few bottles of fine wine from Auckland—I’d be delighted to share a glass or two with you.” Soth’s smile at that moment was more tragic than tears.

“Heh…” Leon Merlin chuckled, fully aware of what Soth was afraid of, so he didn’t bother beating around the bush. “It’s nothing. I just noticed that the young man Viper’s Nest caught is actually someone from the Gilded Rose, so…”

“S-someone from the Gilded Rose!” Soth nearly collapsed when he heard that.

Damn it, why is it always someone from the Gilded Rose!

Last time Soth detained a few Gilded Rose alchemy apprentices, it left him with lasting trauma. Now, hearing it’s another Gilded Rose person, he almost had a nervous breakdown on the spot. For a moment, he silently cursed the Ashen Tower Grand Mage’s ancestors all the way back eighteen generations.

Seriously, does the Ashen Tower have nothing better to do? Why pick a fight with the Gilded Rose? Fine, whatever—if you must mess with the Gilded Rose, can you not drag me into it? You finish with the Gilded Rose and walk away, but I still have to survive in Seaview City!

If Archmage Leon Merlin thinks I’m in cahoots with the Ashen Tower, how am I supposed to keep living in Seaview City?
