Turning Against Family
May Parker's neck was being squeezed so tightly she thought she was going to suffocate. Her eyes bulged, and she clawed desperately at Samuel Evans's arm, unable to believe that while the villagers had let her go, her own brother was now trying to strangle her to death!
"Brother, let me go... Please, I'm your sister... I don't want to die..." May Parker rolled her eyes, gasping out broken, incomplete sentences.
"If you don't die, how will anyone else live? How could you be so selfish!" Samuel Evans was like a madman. "You forced me—you made me do this! It's all your fault, you wretched woman!"
"Samuel, stop!" Helen Parker rushed in, breathless. The moment she entered, she saw May Parker about to be strangled and immediately threw herself at Samuel Evans, slapping his arm while crying, "Samuel, let go! Are you trying to kill your own mother?"
Samuel Evans's eyes were bloodshot as he glared at Helen Parker. "Get out of my way!"
Helen Parker saw May Parker was about to pass out and fought desperately to pry Samuel Evans's fingers away.
"Sam, hurry and help!" Susan Evans, Grandma Evans, and Sam Evans also rushed in.
Sam Evans quickly tried to pry Samuel Evans's hand away. As a strong farmer, Sam Evans easily overpowered the scholarly Samuel Evans. Only then was May Parker rescued, slumping to the ground, gasping for air with wide, terrified eyes.
Helen Parker hugged May Parker and sobbed, "My poor girl, what did we do to deserve this?"
"Samuel, May Parker is still your sister..." Even Susan Evans couldn't bear to watch and spoke up to intervene.
Samuel Evans shot her a murderous glare, his eyes full of rage and malice. Susan Evans shivered in fear!
Was this still the refined scholar? No, he looked more like a butcher ready to kill!
May Parker sat for a long time before she could catch her breath, trembling all over, tears streaming down her face. She couldn't believe her own brother would rather kill her for the sake of his reputation.
"Now that something's happened, you want to kill me?" May Parker's anger and grievance finally boiled over. Leaning on Helen Parker's arm, she staggered to her feet, glaring at Samuel Evans. "Brother, are you so desperate to see me dead because you're scared I'll expose your dirty secret about selling your own sister?"
A cold light flashed in Samuel Evans's eyes. He slapped her hard and cursed, "You shameless woman, how dare you spout such nonsense!"
May Parker's mouth filled with blood, but she gave a chilling smile, staring right at Samuel Evans. "Do you dare let the family know it was you who pushed me onto Benjamin Zhang's bed? You coaxed me, saying if I served him well, I'd become the Zhang family's young madam! You took me out with Benjamin Zhang, and now you pretend to be so righteous, wishing you could strangle me to wash your hands of it. But you were the one who sold your own sister!"
Helen Parker swayed as she heard this. "May Parker, don't say such things! Your brother only acted out of anger, don't blame him!"
Samuel Evans's gaze grew even more frightening. He glared at May Parker, spitting out each word: "You shameless woman, say one more word and I'll beat you to death right now!"
"Go on, kill me then!" May Parker stared at Samuel Evans, her heart colder than ice in the dead of winter. "Brother, I protected your reputation before. When the Village Chief asked how I got involved with Benjamin Zhang, I bit my tongue and said I went to him myself—I never exposed you! I never thought the brother I protected with my life would turn on me and try to kill me!"
