Black Record, A Lifetime of Debt

2/14/2026

The secret Logan Ling had hidden for decades was finally exposed, and the shackles in his heart were lifted. For the first time, he felt truly free.

Actually, once the secret was out, it wasn’t nearly as humiliating as he’d imagined. Seeing only pity—not disgust—in Serena’s, Simon Sun’s, and Left Shore’s eyes, Logan finally felt like a real person.

From this moment on, he no longer had to bear the weight of his past, no longer had to live in constant fear that those around him would discover his difference. He could finally face Serena and Simon Sun openly, without pretending, without worrying that they’d see his brokenness and look at him with contempt.

He was liberated!

Logan closed his eyes and let out a long, heavy breath.

Left Shore patted Logan’s shoulder in silent comfort: everything from Logan’s past had been buried in that great fire. Skyvault Fortress was gone, Fortress Lord Ling was gone—who survived now was a brand new Logan Ling.

Logan’s body was unique. Even with the chains in his heart gone, he still couldn’t tolerate Serena’s nearness or accept anesthetics for a while.

Any time anesthetics or sedatives were used, Logan’s whole body would seize up—a reflex he couldn’t control. Not even Serena or Simon Sun could do anything about it.

Simon Sun’s plan was for Logan to undergo surgery fully awake. But the pain from surgery isn’t something a normal person can endure. Simon explained it to Logan, but Logan didn’t even blink before agreeing.

He’d suffered every kind of pain in his life—pain didn’t scare him. He could promise that no matter how many cuts Simon Sun made, he wouldn’t flinch or move a muscle, giving Simon absolute peace of mind.

Even with Logan’s assurance, Simon Sun was still worried. To make sure the surgery would go smoothly, Simon made a small test incision on Logan—and proved that Logan really could endure pain far beyond normal.

If they hadn’t known what Logan had suffered, Simon Sun and Serena might have thought he was just born insensitive to pain. But knowing his past, they understood—Logan had simply gotten used to it. He’d hurt so long, he’d gone numb.

To say their hearts didn’t ache would be a lie. Even after treating so many patients, Serena and Simon Sun were still deeply moved by Logan’s ordeal. Serena could understand Linden Ling’s motive for revenge, but she could never agree with his methods.

If you’re going to kill, just kill. Linden Ling had forced Logan to live his whole life in the shadows.

Once Serena settled on a treatment plan for Linden Ling, Simon Sun began preparing for the surgery. Serena could help with the prep, but during the actual operation she had to wait outside—Logan couldn’t bear anyone’s touch but Simon’s.

When Bella Qin heard that Simon Sun was going to operate on Logan, she found an excuse to approach him: “Brother Sixing, this isn’t the Jiangnan region—you won’t find a suitable assistant here. Let me help you, okay?”

“No need.” Thanks to Serena’s guidance, Simon Sun was much more composed when facing Bella Qin, and his refusal was firm and clear.

Bella Qin’s eyes filled with tears the moment she heard it. “Brother Sixing, do you dislike me now? I can do really well now—why don’t you test me? I promise I’ll pass.”

Simon Sun glanced at Bella Qin, his heart aching, but he shook his head firmly. “I don’t need an assistant for this surgery.”

Bella Qin had learned well, but because of her health, she could only assist with minor procedures. If she worked too long, her body couldn’t keep up—in the end, they might have to save her instead of the patient.

“How—how could you not need me? On the road, when we ran into patients, you let me help, too. Now it’s only because Sister Serena is going to be your assistant that you don’t need me, isn’t it?” Bella Qin choked out, struggling to keep her tears from falling.

Simon Sun had never noticed it before, but now that he listened closely, he realized how easily Bella Qin’s words could be misunderstood.

Luckily, this time he really didn’t need a surgical assistant. If it were like before, with his master assisting, Bella Qin’s words would make it sound like his master had stolen her place and pushed her out.

He really had been too naïve.

Simon Sun gave a self-mocking smile, but didn’t show it in front of Bella Qin. He just kept insisting he didn’t need any help for this surgery.

Simon Sun was immune to both pleading and pressure—Bella Qin had no choice but to leave, looking dejected, glancing back at every step as if hoping he’d change his mind. But the more she acted like this, the worse Simon felt inside.

How stupid was he, to beg his master to be nicer to Bella Qin? How stupid, to ever think Bella Qin liked him?

Bella Qin was good to everyone—there was no difference in her eyes. She could show kindness and care to anyone, making everyone believe she was a wonderful girl who deserved to be cherished by all.

Left Shore was right—she was exactly the kind of girl he couldn’t afford to provoke!

Serena and Felix Fuller weren’t just making excuses when they said she’d been busy lately. Logan’s surgery was a huge priority for Serena—she oversaw everything, from prep to post-op care. It might not be perfect, but she refused to let any human error cause a medical accident.

Serena needed to take surgical equipment from her Smart Med‑Pack. But when she activated the Smart Med‑Pack and saw the big red letters on the screen, she was stunned.

“What’s going on?” The whole screen was red, and the alarm sound was especially grating. Serena couldn’t help suspecting—was her Smart Med‑Pack about to break down?

“Don’t you dare get temperamental on me.” Serena was anxious—she was certain her rebirth was tied to the Smart Med‑Pack. If it broke, would she just vanish from this world?

She wasn’t afraid of dying, but now she couldn’t bear to die—what would happen to Little Feng Jin if she did?

Serena’s face grew serious as she frantically tapped the Smart Med‑Pack, trying to figure out what was causing the red alert. When she saw the answer, she was dumbfounded.

“Does it have to be this cruel? How could my Medical Ethics Points go so far into the negative? I only killed one person—and he’s not even dead yet!” Seeing the glaring red number on the Medical Ethics System, Serena was on the verge of tears.

What was this nonsense? She remembered clearly she’d had over a hundred points before. Killing one person should’ve cost her a few hundred at most—how could it go negative, and by so much?

“Am I going to spend my whole life paying off this debt?” With –999 points, she’d have to save a thousand people just to break even. And if she wanted to redeem more items, she’d have to keep saving lives—at this rate…

“Looks like I’ll be working for you forever, System Master. Is there any reason for a trial version to be this unreliable?”

She slammed her fist on the ground!

If the Smart Med‑Pack weren’t embedded in her arm, Serena would’ve ripped it out and stomped on it.

This system was just too capricious—deducting points however it liked. Was Jason Lan’s life really that valuable?

“Ugh…” Serena was about to lose it. If she weren’t stuck in ancient times, she’d storm the research institute and make those scientists see what a piece of junk this system was—maybe even expose it as a scam.

“Master, are you okay?” Outside the operating room, Simon Sun rushed over as soon as the servants told him what happened.

The servant said, Miss Feng seemed to be shaken!
