Should He Strangle the Baby?
"Yes, Your Highness. What about Boss Su?" the attendant asked.
"Little Chili..." Prince Ling thought of Su Li, his heart scratched as if by a cat. He truly couldn't bear to lose the one he cherished most. Suddenly, a gleam flashed in his eyes: "Little Chili, I will claim you!"
At night, Su Li sat in Wu Caiwei's room, playing with the little baby.
"Chou Chou, call your godmother!" Su Li said affectionately, holding the baby. Because Wu Caiwei had found the baby ugly at birth, she simply gave him the nickname Chou Chou (Ugly).
But now Chou Chou had grown up a bit, fair and tender-skinned, not ugly at all.
"It's not even a full month yet, babies can't talk that early. At least a year old," Wu Caiwei smiled.
Wu Caiwei was doing her postpartum confinement at Su Li's home, served by maids for everything. Wang and Chen families took turns accompanying her, helping with the baby. Her husband doted on her, and her father was at ease. This confinement period completely transformed her into a graceful young woman.
"By the way, how are we planning the full-month celebration?" Su Li asked.
Wu Caiwei held little Chou Chou's tiny hand and smiled, "It's almost a full month already. Time flies. The godmother said the celebration will be at your house since it's cold outside; no one needs to suffer the cold."
Su Li had no objections and nodded, "Then let's follow my mother's wishes and hold it at my place. We have plenty of servants and people; it will be lively for my godson."
The two close friends chatted comfortably in the room. Seeing the time was late, Su Li said, "It's getting late, I should head back. Sleep early."
"Take care watching your step," Wu Caiwei smiled, trying to get off the bed to see her off, but Su Li stopped her, "Lie down properly, don't come out. Be careful not to catch a chill during confinement."
"Oh, you've spoiled me," Wu Caiwei laughed and sat back down. She watched Su Li leave, cradling little Chou Chou, humming a cheerful tune. Suddenly, she remembered another family's baby in the village, born just a day apart from Chou Chou and also nearing a full month—the son of Liu Ru and Su Shimao. Given the Su family's dire straits, she wondered how that child was doing.
Su Family.
Zhao held her grandson in her arms, sitting happily by the bedside. The birth of this boy had lightened the gloomy atmosphere in the house, bringing a bit of vitality to the family.
Liu Ru was resting during her confinement, sleeping most of the time. She had already decided she didn’t want this child, so she simply didn’t care to look after him. Since she planned to escape, she didn’t want to feel sad about leaving the child behind.
Su Laoye and Su Daqi occasionally came in to check on the baby. Even Su Laotai stopped scolding and instead murmured blessings for the great-grandson.
This newborn baby seemed to have reshaped the Su family’s core spirit. Meanwhile, Su Shimao, once the family’s golden boy, had fallen into disgrace and become the most unwelcome member of the household.
Even Zhao, who used to care most about Su Shimao, had shifted her attention to the newborn child.
Su Shimao was driven into the family’s most dilapidated room, sitting on the bed trembling, his eyes full of hatred.
It was all that child’s fault. If it weren’t for that child, Su Shimao would be the Su family’s only heir!
In an instant, a resolute murderous intent flashed in Su Shimao’s eyes: if that child were gone, he would become the sole heir of the Su family. For a moment, he even wanted to strangle the child who had caused him to lose his status!
But then he hesitated...
Su Shimao reached out, slipping his hand under the blanket to grab that lifeless thing. His teeth bit down until they bled in hatred: he could no longer be humane. But that child was his only son. If the child died, then by bloodline the Su family still had the third branch, Su Shirong, to carry on the family line. Su Shimao would truly be left without an heir!
Su Shimao was caught in a boundless internal struggle: should he, under the cover of night, strangle the infant in the cradle?
