The Only Hope

Nearby, Doctor Lin listened to their conversation and anxiously said, "A-Li, I know you've been poisoned and are worried about the child, but you can't just try anything out of desperation! Xiao Wu is only six years old, and he's only read a few books about those foreign medical practices. Now he's come up with this wild idea of a blood transfusion. Even the Lin family's ancestors couldn't do it—how could a little kid possibly succeed!?"

Su Li looked at Doctor Lin, knowing he was worried she might do something reckless out of confusion.

But Su Li was a modern person who had traveled here from the present era. In modern times, blood tests, transfusions, and blood draws are basic medical procedures—not difficult at all.

So when Lin Xiaowu mentioned a blood transfusion, Su Li saw a glimmer of hope.

As long as the blood could be replaced, swapping out the poisoned blood for healthy blood, the toxic blood would no longer harm the baby's brain and nerves, and the level of impairment could be stopped from worsening.

If luck was on their side and the treatment was timely, perhaps the baby's self-repair abilities—stronger than an adult's—would kick in. As the child grew, more healthy brain cells might develop, and maybe normal intelligence could be restored.

But all of this depended on the success of a blood transfusion, something only possible with modern medicine.

In ancient times, people hadn't even figured out what blood circulation was, let alone blood types.

Could Lin Xiaowu really pull off a blood transfusion just with what he'd read in medical books?

Su Li wasn't very confident about it either. But looking at Lin Xiaowu's determined little face, she said, "Xiao Wu, I believe in your method. It's just... we don't have the equipment... equipment..."

Suddenly, Lily's mind lit up. Every time Edward returned from his overseas adventures, she'd have him bring back treasures from France. By now, those exotic items filled two whole courtyards right in the Prince's Manor.

Lily immediately called out, "Quentin, I had people bring back all sorts of gadgets from abroad—there might be just the tool you need!"

Quentin Lin's eyes sparkled. "Lily, let me go look! Maybe I'll actually find it!"

Dr. Rowan Lin's face turned a dramatic shade of blue with exasperation. "Lily, why are you egging Quentin on in his wild schemes?"

Lily met Dr. Rowan Lin's gaze and said with fierce determination, "Dad, we're out of options. Just let Quentin search for the equipment—if he really finds it, it's at least a ray of hope!"

Unable to refuse Lily, Dr. Rowan Lin sighed, disappointment heavy in his voice as he addressed Quentin, "Fine, you stubborn little rascal. Go ahead—hunt for your gadgets! Even if you do find something, the Yuan family won't let you use this wild blood-changing method on their child!"

Quentin Lin looked up at Dr. Rowan Lin, his eyes burning with hope. "Dad, whether they let me try or not, I have to find those tools. I believe—one day, I'll save someone with this blood-changing technique!"

With that, Quentin Lin snatched the key from Lily's hand and bolted toward the courtyard, his small figure bursting with urgency and hope.

Lily watched Quentin's retreating figure, her heart silently pleading: Quentin, you must succeed. My baby depends on you now.

As Quentin dashed away, the Yuan family remained lost in their tears. Even Dr. Rowan Lin had declared the child incurable—who would believe the wild hopes of a six-year-old like Quentin?

Little Yuan the steward cried as he helped, washing and wrapping the child together with the mother and the midwife.

The mentally impaired child opened his eyes wide, mouth slightly agape and drooling, which made Little Yuan's heart ache terribly.

Inside the room, Bailu woke up and softly called, "Yuan Yu-ge, where's the child? Let me hold the baby and feed him."

Little Yuan kept crying, not knowing how he could possibly bring such a child to Bailu. How much would it hurt her to see this?
