Journey to the Healer's Sanctuary (3)

12/2/2025

Maxwell Jing narrowed his eyes at the corpse on the ground. Suddenly, he grabbed Ethan Gu and walked out. Behind the rockery, Maxwell spoke, his tone certain: "You did this!"

Ethan Gu glanced at him, remaining silent.

Seeing his tacit admission, Maxwell Jing couldn't help but frown. Did Lucas Lu say something he shouldn't have? If he had known, he would have killed Lucas Lu outright!

He had considered that an incident at this time would cause a stir. Given Ethan Gu's character, he would seize on this and never let go. To make him willingly hand over the Treasure Map was nearly impossible!

Besides, Lucas Lu truly respected Ethan Gu. Once Lucas figured things out, he would never bother Ethan again. Maxwell had already set someone to watch Lucas Lu!

But with Ethan Gu's abilities, finding a loophole to kill Lucas Lu wasn't surprising at all!

Noticing Maxwell Jing's troubled expression, Ethan Gu suddenly spoke, "If you don't want him dead, I can bring him back to life!" Although Maxwell called him an enemy, Ethan had kept a backup plan just in case!

"Huh? You can bring the dead back?" A sudden voice startled them both. Neither had noticed anyone approaching—how careless!

Turning to see who it was, Maxwell Jing rolled his eyes. "Susie Yun, can you not scare people like that?" He was now fully aware of Ryan Ouyang's presence. At this moment, Susie Yun was being held by Ryan Ouyang, her feet off the ground. With her aura concealed, it really was hard to notice her!

Susie Yun quickly asked Ryan Ouyang to put her down. If anyone saw them like this, it would be quite alarming. But she had only come to eavesdrop because Maxwell Jing and Ethan Gu seemed so secretive!

Ethan Gu glanced at the corpse in the hall from afar and asked, "Should I save him? If we don't, he'll really die!"

Maxwell Jing waved his hand, saying, "Forget it, let him die!" He had no fondness for Lucas Lu, even if Lucas had only a partial understanding of the situation; he was still an accomplice. Dying suited him just fine! Besides, whatever the sect leader wanted, Ethan Gu wouldn't be able to keep it anyway.

He just wondered how Lucas Lu felt about dying at the hands of the young master he admired most.

With so many people around, it was impossible to investigate even if they wanted to. Besides, no one wanted to make enemies at this time—having too many enemies brought no benefit. In the end, the matter was left unresolved, but everyone became more cautious, guarding against hidden threats.

As Martial Alliance Chief, Liam Duanmu was responsible for finding the real culprit when someone died without reason among the righteous. So, even though no one pursued the matter, he did not give up searching for clues.

But since Ethan Gu had acted personally, it would be hard to find any clues.

Knowing that Ethan Gu was responsible, Damien Gray and Morgan Shangguan didn't ask further—after all, the death of Lucas Lu made no difference.

Seeing Maxwell Jing looking troubled, Ethan Gu finally said when they were alone, "If you're really that upset, I can go save him!" He should still be able to save him, right?

Maxwell Jing snapped out of it and rolled his eyes. "Which eye of yours saw me being upset?"

Then why do you look like I owe you something?

Maxwell Jing raised his hands in surrender. "You don't owe me—fine, I owe you, okay?" After a pause, he asked as if nothing was wrong, "Did Lucas Lu say anything?"

Ethan Gu narrowed his eyes at him. "You've been worrying about that all along?"

Maxwell Jing waved it off. "I'm just asking!"

"Really?" Ethan Gu gave him a skeptical look and pondered, "He said..." He paused, as if thinking about something.

Maxwell Jing asked nervously, "What did he say?"

"Who?" With that, he turned and left.

Maxwell Jing looked around but didn't see anyone. He stood there, stunned for a while, before finally realizing that Lucas Lu had only said one word: "Who?" That was the first reaction upon seeing a stranger or sensing sudden killing intent. He should have known—with Ethan Gu's skills, Lucas wouldn't have had much chance to say anything, unless Ethan asked. But Ethan would never pry into his secrets, even if he was curious!

Maxwell Jing was completely dumbfounded. Had he just been played? His mouth twitched as he muttered, "Some things never change!"

Squinting at Ethan Gu's retreating figure, Maxwell Jing sighed and whispered, "Maybe I shouldn't stay so close to you."

Tsk, tsk... truly touching!

Hearing that troublemaker's voice, Maxwell Jing snapped back to reality. "When did you show up? Weren't you gone? You're as elusive as the sect master!"

Quentin Hua's skills were truly unfathomable—even both Ethan Gu and Maxwell Jing hadn't noticed him!

Quentin Hua ignored his question and instead threw an arm around his shoulder, asking suspiciously, "Are you sure Little Ethan really doesn't have any special feelings for you?"

Maxwell Jing shoved him away, as if disgusted, and brushed off imaginary dust from his shoulder. "It's just family, don't you get it?"

"Family?" Quentin Hua looked skeptical. "I really hate that ugly guy from the Iron Thunder Gang—how come Ethan Gu never goes to kill him? Aren't they supposed to be brothers?"

Maxwell Jing frowned. "What did he ever do to you? Don't tell me it's just because he's ugly!" Though, to be honest, he really wasn't much to look at.

Quentin Hua stared at him incredulously. "Didn't you notice that day when I pushed him away, he glared at me?"

Good thing Maxwell Jing wasn't drinking tea at that moment, or he would have spat it all over Quentin Hua!

Seeing Maxwell Jing completely speechless, Quentin Hua suddenly became serious, squinting and saying, "You don't have to deny it. Ethan Gu really is different with you!"

Maxwell Jing smiled, a bit bitterly. "I know, but it's really just family—and partly habit!" Some things were just impossible to change.

Hearing this, Quentin Hua frowned. People always said bystanders saw things more clearly, but maybe Maxwell Jing understood better than anyone. Quentin smiled, shook his head, and sighed, "No wonder! I, as the sect master, can't compare to you. After all, you two have slept side by side since childhood! Habits like that take time to form!"
