An Explanation

"I like you!"

Lynn Chen's voice was loud, echoing through every corner of the school.

Her words, broadcast through the school radio, struck straight to the heart.

"She finally said it!"

Some people looked excitedly in Lynn Chen's direction, their faces full of complicated emotions.

"This is a confession, a real confession! Ahhh, on the last day of senior year, I actually get to witness something that only happens in TV dramas and movies—a public confession!"

A plain-looking girl’s eyes turned red as she covered her mouth, gazing at Lynn Chen.

Whether girl or boy—

Who hasn’t had a crush before?

After all, few get what they wish for.

Right now, as everyone watched Lynn Chen summon her courage, seeing her determined stance, most found themselves thinking of the person they secretly cared about.

"Go for it, Lynn Chen!"

In the radio room, Wendy Wen clenched her fists tightly. Watching Lynn Chen’s back through her phone screen as she stood before Evan Lin, Wendy sniffled, feeling a strange sadness inside.

She’d encouraged Lynn Chen to confess to Evan Lin—maybe because she herself never had that kind of courage.

Honestly, Wendy Wen hadn’t liked Evan Lin at all at first. Especially seeing his unruly attitude, acting like even the teachers couldn’t control him—she’d truly disliked him from the bottom of her heart.

But over the course of the year, with occasional contact and overlap, Wendy found herself warming up to Evan Lin.

No matter what, Evan Lin was strong, had great grades, and always seemed to break the rules—but Wendy had never seen him go out of his way to make trouble for anyone.

In fact, his disinterested attitude toward everything was exactly the kind of calm detachment Wendy had always admired.

The whole school was waiting for Evan Lin’s response.

Lynn Chen’s hand holding the microphone was trembling slightly.

The hot summer wind lifted her long hair.

Just saying those words had already used up all her courage.

She looked at Evan Lin in front of her, face full of nervousness.

Evan Lin, leaning against the wall, pushed off with one foot and stood up straight, stepping fully into the sunlight.

His profile, now sharper and no longer thin as it once was, seemed to glow faintly in the eyes of those watching.

"Say something! Why are you just standing there?"

"Hurry up and answer her!"

"You’re killing me! Ahhh! This is so exciting to watch."

A group of girls looked anxiously in that direction, wishing they could rush over and shove Evan Lin forward.

They all admired Lynn Chen’s courage.

Just like not every boy is outstanding, not every girl is pursued by someone.

This moment will definitely become an unavoidable topic at their class reunions ten or twenty years from now.

By then, they’ll no longer be young—maybe weathered by life and society’s trials—but they’ll always have this memory.

In this summer, they once witnessed the festival of youth!

Someone brought their most longed-for love as the final lesson sounded with the graduation bell!

"Thank you for liking me."

Evan Lin carefully considered his tone, walked forward a few steps, and stopped.

Lynn Chen was still two meters away from him.

She clutched the microphone awkwardly, not knowing what to do.

"Thank you for liking me."

Almost at the same moment—

Wendy Wen’s voice came through the radio, sounding a bit serious.

At this moment, with the whole school waiting, Evan Lin didn’t have a microphone, so his voice couldn’t reach every corner.

Greg Zhao, who was live-streaming the scene for Wendy Wen with his phone, repeated Evan Lin’s words into the device.

Then Wendy Wen, after clearing her throat and steadying her emotions, slowly spoke into the radio mic, broadcasting Evan’s words across campus.

A true live broadcast.

It had to be said, Wendy Wen’s emotional control was spot-on, pulling at everyone’s heartstrings.

"I never expected you’d talk to me this way, on this day."

Evan Lin looked at Lynn Chen, taking her seriously.

Standing before him was Lynn Chen, but in truth, it was also his own past.

What’s called a ‘bond’ is the past that’s already happened and can never be changed.

More importantly, Evan Lin never once looked down on Lynn Chen, even though his status now was far above what it used to be.

Lynn Chen took deep breaths, gripping the microphone and forcing herself to meet Evan Lin’s gaze.

When her eyes met Evan’s clear gaze, Lynn felt a wave of fear and unease.

"Actually, I used to like you."

Evan Lin spoke slowly.

With that one sentence, the whole school exploded.

But soon, everyone quieted down, afraid to miss a single word from Evan Lin.

Even Henry Wang, who had been struggling to push through the crowd, instinctively stopped and perked up his ears.

Lynn Chen’s body trembled, her expression flustered.

These were Evan Lin’s true feelings.

Back then, when Evan Lin first came to Minghai from a small county, seeing a city girl like Lynn Chen—bright, proud, and confident—made him feel nothing but inferiority and pure admiration.

To be honest—

If Lynn Chen hadn’t been so pretty, if she’d been freckled and overweight, then Evan Lin back then probably wouldn’t have thought anything of her.

"When I first arrived in Minghai, you were the most beautiful sight I’d ever seen. Even now, I won’t deny it."

Evan Lin spoke quietly, as if recounting something ordinary.

But every word sparked endless thoughts in the minds of those listening.

They could imagine the innocence and thrill a boy feels when he first meets a beautiful girl—the pounding heart, full of energy.

Lynn Chen’s cheeks turned slightly red.

In the sunlight, her profile looked even more delicate.

"Today’s you likes the current me."

"The old me liked the old you."

Evan Lin spoke slowly.

He didn’t want to hurt Lynn Chen standing before him.

Hearing this, many in the crowd started to worry.

Lynn Chen’s cheeks flushed as she stared blankly.

"So, are you saying you don’t like me?"

Lynn Chen looked at Evan Lin, softly murmuring, looking timid and vulnerable.

There was no arrogance or pride on her face now—she looked more like a child waiting for candy.

Everyone’s hearts were in their throats.

When Wendy Wen repeated this line, even her voice wavered a little.

Evan Lin was silent for a moment.

The surroundings were utterly quiet.

"If you really want an answer, all I can say is—I don’t know, for now."

Evan Lin looked at Lynn Chen, seriously: "I understand your worries and struggles these past few days."

"Back then, you didn’t like the useless me, and that’s normal. You don’t need to feel guilty about it. If I were you, I wouldn’t have liked me either."

"Now you like the capable me, and that’s normal too—there are just a lot more people who like me these days."

After Evan Lin said this, the previously tense atmosphere suddenly relaxed a lot.

Many people around couldn’t help but cover their mouths and laugh.

Even Lynn Chen couldn’t hold back—a smile appeared at the corner of her mouth.

"Let’s use the college entrance exam as a dividing line. After it’s over, let’s both take some time to cool off."

"If, after university, you still feel the same way, then maybe we can talk about this again."

"This is my answer to you—and to the person I used to be."
