Don't Be Afraid, My Wife
"How did May Parker get released without punishment? Didn't David Evans already talk to the county magistrate?" Bai Lu fumed at the thought of the scheming May Parker walking free.
Steward Eugene Warren replied, "The county magistrate is just a ninth-rank official, but the scholar David Evans saved is a second-rank official—Governor Yale. Getting May Parker released was as simple as a word. Neither the magistrate nor David Evans would dare offend the newly arrived Governor Yale, so they declared there wasn't enough evidence and let May Parker go free."
Lily Evans sighed, "What a shame."
Eugene Warren continued sharing what he'd heard: "Apparently, when David Evans was young, he went up the mountain to chop wood and happened to save a scholar from a wolf attack. They lost touch for over a decade, but when David Evans went to the county office for May Parker's case, he ran into Governor Yale, and they recognized each other. Governor Yale is known for repaying kindness—he immediately ordered May Parker's release and gave Samuel Evans and David Evans respectable jobs at the county office. I also heard he'll register Samuel Evans as a Student Scholar."
"What? Even Samuel Evans is becoming a Student Scholar?" Lily Evans's jaw dropped. It looked like the whole Evans Family was about to hit it big thanks to Governor Yale.
"We gave May Parker and Helen Parker a real lesson. Do you think David Evans will go to Governor Yale and speak ill of us? Will it bring trouble for our family?" Bai Lu asked anxiously.
Eugene Warren sighed and shook his head. "I really couldn't say."
Lily Evans was worried the Evans Family might use this chance for revenge. With a second-rank official backing them, if they really wanted to cause trouble, even with Leonard Li supporting the Evans Family, it would be a headache.
After all, Governor Yale is a powerful official with real authority, overseeing Greenfield City. Leonard Li, though a royal prince of the Huainan line, is just a pampered young lord with no actual power.
"Let's not worry about things that haven't happened yet. We've got plenty to deal with as it is. If the Evans Family really tries to get revenge, we'll handle whatever comes our way." Lily Evans flicked her hair.
Bai Lu nodded, "You're right. If we keep worrying, we'll never get any sleep."
Lily Evans smiled, "Don't be afraid, Bai Lu. The Evans Family can't touch us. If they want to make trouble, we'll fight back. Besides, we've got Leonard Li on our side."
Bai Lu relaxed a little after hearing Lily Evans's reassurance.
Lily Evans glanced at Lucky, who was quietly peeling potatoes beside her. She couldn't help but smile—her simple-minded husband always brought her peace of mind.
Lucky looked up, caught Lily Evans's gaze, and grinned. "Don't worry, Lily. If anyone bullies you, I'll protect you!"
Lily Evans laughed, "Alright, my hero. I'll count on you."
The tense atmosphere in the kitchen finally eased. Lily Evans and Bai Lu started chatting about their plans for the coming spring.
Lucky, still peeling potatoes, hummed a cheerful tune, his simple smile lighting up the room.
