It's over. They're really vampire bats.
Am I really going to die on this deserted island today?
I'm so unwilling. Really, so unwilling!
I still have family, friends, a husband, a child!
There are still so many wishes I haven't fulfilled!
Am I really going to die here?
Seeing Cecilia Gu's face turn pale in an instant, Earl Field decided he'd teased her enough. He finally coughed lightly and said, "But don't worry. You forgot one thing: bats have another natural enemy—humans. Because humans are smarter than they are."
After saying this, Earl Field shook his wrist, took off his watch, and pressed a few buttons. The watch suddenly came apart into a pile of components.
Cecilia Gu stared in shock as Earl Field reassembled the watch into a strange-looking device. She couldn't help but ask, "What is that?"
"This is a sonar device. I used it back when I went deep-sea exploring to drive away sharks and other dangerous creatures. You probably don't know, but I'm actually a champion deep-sea diver," Earl Field said softly. "Bats rely on ultrasound for everything. You learned that in school, didn't you?"
Cecilia nearly burst into tears. "Yeah, I learned it, but what good does that do now?"
"Actually, sonar systems are a kind of ultrasound," Earl Field explained. "It works the same underwater as it does on land. The only difference is, you need different frequencies for different species."
Earl Field adjusted the device in his hand and pressed a button. "As long as we find the bats' frequency, we can drive them away effectively."
As soon as Earl Field finished speaking, a huge swarm of bats overhead suddenly scattered and flew out in a rush.
Cecilia was so startled by the bats' sudden movement that she shivered and sat right next to Earl Field, completely stunned.
Seeing Cecilia move closer on her own, a hint of joy flickered in Earl Field's red eyes.
Cecilia didn't notice Earl Field's gaze at all. She just stared at the bats overhead, terrified they'd come rushing back at her.
The ultrasound from Earl Field's watch only worked within a certain range.
The bats farther away didn't move at all, still watching the two of them below, eyes gleaming with menace.
Once again, Cecilia was on the verge of tears.
