An Unexpected Surprise

1/19/2026

Evan Chu glanced at the red bottle of Great Return Pills in his hand, then said to Gavin Wei, "These are your Great Return Pills. Take them!"

With that, he tossed it straight to him.

Gavin Wei caught the Great Return Pills and said, "Thank you, Evan! You're seriously amazing. How did you get away with not giving them any Starstones and still not get thrown out or beaten up?"

"Oh, that? I don't really know. Maybe it's because I'm on pretty good terms with the auction master, so they give me special treatment," Evan Chu replied.

"Why aren't you going back? Are you really planning to spend the night here and not leave?" Gavin asked.

"That's right. What, are you planning to get chopped to pieces out on the road? We've already drawn plenty of attention today. I don't want to get ambushed and killed, so it's safer to stay here," Evan said.

Just then, there was a knock at the door. "Young Master, the food and wine you ordered are here. Also, the auction master asked me to tell you she's busy right now, but she'll come see you personally later."

"Alright, got it. You go ahead and do your thing," Evan said.

Then, two young women came in carrying trays. The trays held several exquisite dishes that instantly whetted one's appetite, along with two jugs of wine.

"The auction master said I should stay and serve you!" Lynn said.

Gavin Wei was stunned all over again. His nerves, which had just calmed down, instantly flared back up—having the auction house’s own top hostess personally serve them was just unbelievable.

"Evan, did you... did you actually ask her to serve us?"

"I didn’t ask her. She volunteered!" Evan Chu laughed.

The two young women soon left the room. Evan Chu smiled and said, "Have a seat. You're Lynn, right? You did a great job today!"

"Thank you for the compliment, Young Master. Let me pour you some wine!" Lynn replied, then filled Evan’s glass to the brim and moved to fill Gavin’s as well.

Gavin immediately stood up, a little flustered. "I... I’ll do it myself! I wouldn’t dare trouble Miss Lynn!"

Evan Chu watched Gavin’s nervous reaction and laughed. "Lynn, just let him be! By the way, are there any items in tomorrow’s auction that I’ll need?"

Lynn glanced at Evan and asked, "Do you really want to know, Young Master?"

"Of course. That’s the main reason I came to Bastion City," Evan said seriously.

"There is, and it’s a very rare one too. But you’re not the only person after it, Young Master. It won’t be easy to win," Lynn replied.

"How much is that treasure worth in Starstones? How many people want it?" Evan Chu asked urgently. He wasn’t sure if it was a soul-healing or mind-healing medicine, but either way, he had to get it.

"This kind of medicine is extremely rare. The starting price will be around five hundred thousand Starstones. You need to be mentally prepared, Young Master, or you might get burned when the time comes," Lynn said seriously.

Gavin was so shocked he choked on his wine and coughed for ages before finally sputtering, "Five hundred thousand Starstones? Evan, you mean the stuff you need starts at half a million?"

"That's right. Surprised? Oh, aren’t you consigning something too? Let me see what you’re putting up for auction this time," Evan Chu laughed.

Gavin shot Evan a frustrated look and muttered, "Forget it, my stuff’s not worth auctioning at all. The last day is full of crazy valuable items, and mine is probably worth a couple hundred Starstones at best."

"Let’s see it anyway. Lynn’s here—she can help you check it out. Who knows, maybe it’ll fetch a good price," Evan Chu joked.

Gavin glanced at the two of them, then pulled out a gray, egg-sized bead from his storage belt and said, "It’s just this bead. I stumbled on it in a cave once. It has a faint energy fluctuation, so I thought it was one of those priceless Earth Spirit Pearls. But after having someone look at it, they said it wasn’t, and I was disappointed for ages."

Just then, Luna’s voice rang out in Evan’s mind: "Evan, that’s an Earth Spirit Pearl—a real one! I can’t believe the Earth Spirit Pearl you need showed up so easily."

Evan was so happy he nearly jumped up. It was truly ‘search the world and find it without effort’—he’d stumbled on the exact thing he needed.

Lynn’s eyes also lit up when she saw the bead in Gavin’s hand, but Evan snatched it up in a flash and stuffed it into his storage ring before Gavin could even react.

"Why'd you snatch my bead?" Gavin asked, confused by Evan’s sudden move.

"Haha, I just think it looks nice. Even if it’s not an Earth Spirit Pearl, it’s still pretty cool, so I took it. You’re not gonna ask me for Starstones, right? I did buy you the Great Return Pills," Evan Chu joked, inwardly ecstatic.

Who would’ve thought that just running into someone on the road would net him something this heaven-defying? It was almost unbelievable.

Gavin wanted to protest, but remembering Evan had spent five thousand Starstones to get him the Great Return Pills, he held his tongue.

"Don’t worry, Gavin. I’ll pay you for the bead—one hundred thousand Starstones, so you can’t say I ripped you off," Evan said, seeing Gavin’s hesitation.

"Young Master, you really do have a good eye for treasures!" Lynn remarked.

"Haha, even if Gavin’s stuff isn’t amazing, I still have to look out for him!" Evan said, then shot Lynn a warning glance—she’d clearly noticed the bead was special too.

Just then, a voice Evan found both familiar and unfamiliar called from outside: "Come out with me—I have something to discuss!"

Evan instantly recognized it as Selena’s voice and laughed, "Why not come in and have a seat, Auction Master?"

"Suit yourself. You’ve got one minute!"

Evan knew this woman was not someone he could afford to offend, so he hurried out the door. Seeing her glaring at him furiously, he cursed inwardly—this demoness was definitely about to give him trouble again.

"Come with me!" Selena ordered, striding off. Evan followed, feeling pretty uneasy.

Once they left the auction house, Selena grabbed Evan by the collar and leapt into the sky. In a few breaths, they vanished over Bastion City, wind roaring in Evan’s ears and stinging his face.

They landed on the same meadow as before. Evan stared at Selena, puzzled. "Why bring me here? What do you want to talk about?"

"I wanted you to enjoy the scenery—and pick a good spot for your grave," Selena said coldly.

Evan laughed, "Seriously? You’d really kill me?" But inside, he was speechless—how could she change moods faster than flipping a book? He hadn’t even offended her!

"Enough nonsense!" Selena waved her hand, sending Evan flying several meters back.

Blood surged in Evan’s chest; he nearly coughed up blood but forced it down. He slowly got up, glared at the furious Selena, and said, "You really don’t hold back, huh? If you’re going to kill me, at least give me a reason!"

"No reason—I just don’t like the look of you!" Selena snapped, instantly appearing right in front of Evan. Her speed shocked him; compared to her, his Shifting Position technique was child’s play.

"Wait! Give me a reason. I know you don’t really want to kill me—otherwise you wouldn’t have waited till now. Tell me what’s got you so worked up," Evan said, staring straight at Selena.

Selena could kill him in one move, and her speed was on another level. Evan was gambling—he figured she must have run into trouble, or she wouldn’t be acting like this.

"You want to know?" Selena stared at Evan.

"Of course. Otherwise I’ll die with regrets!"
