Chickens and Rabbits in the Same Cage
Shane Shen took the paper, and written on it was: 'A number of chickens and rabbits are placed together in a cage. There are thirty-five heads above, and ninety-four feet below. How many chickens and rabbits are in the cage?'
Shane stared blankly at the question. What kind of weird puzzle is this? How are you supposed to solve it?
Lily Evans looked unimpressed, casting a cool glance at Shane. She said lightly, 'If you can't solve it, don't force yourself. Honestly, not everyone can handle this kind of problem.'
Shane, challenged by this young lady's dismissive attitude, immediately felt his competitive spirit flare up. 'Who says I can't solve it? Just wait, I'll show you!' he retorted.
With that, Shane sat down at the desk, staring at the puzzle, grabbed an abacus, and started working out the answer.
Lily sipped her tea calmly, sitting in silence. The only sound in the study was the crisp clatter of the abacus.
Meanwhile, Mr. Wu, worried Shane might get himself into trouble, hurried off to find Leonard Li.
But Leonard Li was fast asleep in his room. Mr. Wu anxiously paced outside, knowing full well that his young master had a terrible temper when woken. Nobody dared disturb Leonard Li, fearing they'd end up on the wrong side of his mood.
Mr. Wu circled outside the room anxiously. After a while, Leonard Li finally woke up groggily, saw Mr. Wu's shadow outside, and grumbled, 'Mr. Wu, what are you pacing around for? Can't you let me sleep in peace?'
Cold sweat broke out on Mr. Wu's forehead instantly. Sure enough, his young master was in a terrible mood right after waking up.
"Young Master, that Miss Evans you do business with has come to our manor. She's been waiting for you in the parlor for quite some time," Mr. Wu reported.
"What, she's here!" Leonard Li shot up from bed like a startled carp, dashed barefoot across the room, kicked open the door, and shouted, "Come on, someone help me get dressed!"
Two maidservants hurried in to help Leonard Li dress and wash up. Mr. Wu secretly wiped the sweat from his brow, relieved that the young master hadn't blamed him for disturbing his rest this time.
"How long has Miss Evans been here? Did you serve her good tea?" Leonard Li urged the maids to hurry with his clothes while firing off questions.
Mr. Wu replied, "Miss Evans has been here for almost two hours, sir. I've served her fine tea and snacks, of course. But..."
"Spit it out, what is it!" Leonard Li was especially impatient today.
"It's just that your friend, Master Shen, is also in the parlor. He seems to have some prejudice against Miss Evans..." Mr. Wu hadn't finished speaking when Leonard Li shot out the door like a gust of wind, muttering, "Why did that rascal Shen go looking for her? Hey, don't let him bully Lily!"
"Oh dear, Young Master, you haven't even changed your shoes!" Mr. Wu cried, grabbing Leonard Li's shoes and chasing after him.
Leonard Li snatched his shoes, hopping along as he put them on, and finally managed to get them on before dashing straight to the parlor.
The parlor wasn't the battlefield Leonard Li had imagined. When he arrived, he was surprised to find Shane Shen glued to his seat, hunched over the desk, not even looking up when he heard Leonard come in.
"Mr. Li, I've finally been waiting for you!" Lily Evans breathed a sigh of relief when she saw Leonard Li appear, rising with a bright smile and a graceful bow.
Seeing she was perfectly fine, Leonard Li relaxed and flopped into a chair, taking a sip of tea. He rubbed his head and groaned, "Ugh, I drank too much last night. My head's killing me! It's all Shen's fault—he's so sly, wouldn't drink himself, just kept pouring me more! Hey, Shen, what are you doing over there?"
Shane Shen frowned, not even looking up. "Quit your yapping, I'm busy here."
