Charlie Thompson's Resentment
As soon as Su Li heard that Wu Caiwei was going into labor, she became extremely anxious and hurried home. She was walking so fast that she slipped several times, but luckily Yuanbao held her up so she didn’t fall.
"Wife, slow down and be careful not to fall," Yuanbao said helplessly, looking at his wife. He wondered why she seemed more worried about Wu Caiwei giving birth than about her own delivery.
Su Li couldn’t care about much else; she was only thinking about how dangerous childbirth must be for women in ancient times. She had to be there with Wu Caiwei!
So Su Li quickened her pace, and Yuanbao could only accompany her, supporting her as they went.
"Master, watch your step!" Su Li slipped again, but this time someone caught her arm from behind. She turned to see it was her little apprentice, Lingdang.
Lingdang naturally moved to Su Li’s side, and with Yuanbao on the other side, they supported her from both sides.
"Good, Lingdang, let’s hurry," Su Li said, looking at the little girl. Lingdang was adorable and instantly likable.
Lingdang nodded and quickened her pace.
Su Li was so focused on Wu Caiwei that she didn’t notice Lingdang’s and Yuanbao’s steps were steady and sure, even on the slippery ice.
Lingdang was one of the top three martial artists among Xiao family’s secret guards, the best female secret guard. With two experts like Lingdang and Yuanbao supporting her on either side, Su Li’s steps were much steadier!
Behind them, Yin Dou, Li Huahua, and Guyu—three young girls—weren’t afraid of falling. They slid on the ice as they walked, laughing and chatting happily in the middle of the group.
They didn’t understand much about childbirth and chatted happily, their laughter like silver bells echoing across the snowy plain.
In the distance, Zhang Zhaocai and a few mischievous village kids were having a snowball fight. Hearing the girls’ laughter, Zhang Zhaocai looked up and saw Yin Dou, Li Huahua, and Guyu dressed warmly in light cotton clothes, their hair styled in cute round buns. They clearly came from wealthy families who never had to worry about food or clothing. Especially Yin Dou, raised in a honey jar, doted on by her parents like a little princess. Her happy, innocent smile was painfully glaring to Zhang Zhaocai.
"That little bitch Yin Dou again!" Zhang Zhaocai glared at Yin Dou, his teeth grinding angrily.
Zhang Zhaocai still remembered when Su Li fell into the water and was gravely ill, his mother Tang Shi took him to become Wang Shi's adopted son. At that time, Yuan Jie brought Yin Dou to visit Wang Shi.
Wang Shi refused to accept Zhang Zhaocai as her son on the spot but was warm and affectionate toward Yin Dou. Zhang Zhaocai resented Yin Dou from then on, believing that Yuan Jie had sabotaged him by deliberately bringing Yin Dou close to Wang Shi to ruin his chance of being adopted.
"If it weren’t for you, I’d be the young master of a wealthy family now!" Zhang Zhaocai angrily threw the snowball he was holding onto the ground and stomped on it. "If it weren’t for that little bitch Yin Dou, I’d be wearing fine, expensive clothes, eating delicious food, and living in a warm big house!"
"Zhaocai, what are you doing!?" A snowball flew over and hit Zhang Zhaocai, who was lost in thought.
Zhang Zhaocai’s face was covered in snow, making him even more frustrated. He glared at the friend who threw the snowball and cursed before stomping home angrily.
Looking at the empty, drafty walls of his home, Zhang Zhaocai clenched his fists tightly. "Yin Dou, you ruined my good fortune. Just you wait, I won’t let you off!"
