At the dinner table, Quentin Yu and Helen Qi both knew how formidable Evan Lin was, so they didn’t bother trying to mess with him. Instead, they switched gears and started praising Eric Yu from the sidelines, making sure he looked good in front of Lucy Lu and Charles Chen.
Later on, they wanted to talk about Lynn Chen and Eric Yu’s relationship, even planning out which colleges the kids should aim for.
But as soon as the topic came up, Lucy Lu cut them off, saying she wouldn’t interfere with Lynn’s choices. Quentin Yu and Helen Qi exchanged a look and dropped it.
After dinner, Evan Lin got ready to leave, and Lucy Lu stood up from her seat.
“Evan, let me grab those clothes for you. Hold on a sec.”
Lucy left the table, went upstairs, and came back down with a few big bags of clothes—mostly sportswear and some long-sleeve shirts for fall. There were three whole bags, stuffed full.
“I was going to take you shopping last time, but I couldn’t get through to you on the phone. So I had Lynn pick some out for you instead. See if you like them. If not, we’ll go out together this weekend and find something else.”
Lucy smiled and handed him the bags.
Evan took the bags and thanked her.
“Oh, don’t mention it. Why don’t I drive you home? It’s a bit far from here to your place, isn’t it?”
Charles Chen, who’d just had a drink with Quentin Yu, waved his hand. The more he looked at Evan, the more pleased he seemed. Then he turned to Quentin and said, “This kid’s always been smart. Back in Minghai, he even took first place in the Seacrest Province Math Olympiad.”
Quentin Yu just smiled and didn’t comment.
“No need, I’ll just grab a taxi.”
Evan shook his head.
“Then let Lynn walk you out. Lynn, come on!” Lucy called out to Lynn Chen, who was still sitting at the table.
Lynn hesitated a bit, but finally stood up.
"How about I go too?" Eric Yu jumped in quickly.
“No need, it’s not far at all. Eric, you’re a guest tonight—no way I’m making a guest see someone out.” Charles Chen waved him off and raised his glass. “Come on, have a drink with your uncle!”
Lynn walked Evan out the door. As soon as they left, Helen Qi spoke up after thinking it over: “In a few days, the Su family patriarch is having a big birthday party. All kinds of business and political heavyweights from Jinnan will be there. I was thinking, maybe Eric could take Lynn along for some fun. What do you guys think?”
“Let Lynn decide for herself,” Lucy said after a moment’s thought.
Helen Qi smiled. “I just wanted to check with you in case you weren’t okay with it. If you don’t mind, I’ll let Eric talk to Lynn about it directly.”
Charles Chen and Lucy Lu exchanged a glance.
After a few months in Capitalview, Charles had learned the basics about the city. The Su family had deep pockets and serious connections—getting into their circle wasn’t easy.
Helen’s invitation was for Lynn and Eric, not the whole Chen family. That said a lot—events on this scale weren’t up to Quentin alone, and it was clear he wanted Lynn to get used to Eric’s social circle.
Charles and Lucy kept it neutral—not for, not against.
Out on the apartment walkway.
Lynn walked with her arms swinging, footsteps light and barely making a sound. Since leaving the house, she hadn’t said a word to Evan.
The chilly wind swirled around them. Every so often, Lynn snuck a glance at Evan, who silently lugged three big bags of clothes. Her heart felt a little unsettled. She kept thinking about what Evan said earlier—he was living with two women now, a reporter and a flight attendant. That was hard for her to swallow.
Once they reached the street, Lynn was still lost in her own thoughts. She stared at her long shadow under the streetlights, thinking her figure wasn’t bad at all, and her legs looked extra long. Guys probably all like long-legged girls, right?
But her chest was on the smaller side. Unlike Yolanda Fang—her chest was huge, and who knows what she’s up to in Oceanport City these days.
