Parading Through the Streets

After giving Howard Kay a taste of his own medicine, Shawn Young realized it was getting late. He remembered that since returning to Clearview City, he hadn’t gone home yet. So, he ordered Howard Kay—who was still hugging the toilet and singing—to go upstairs and change, then headed out himself to walk to the police station for work.

Howard Kay obediently went up to the second floor and changed into a police uniform, put on his black-rimmed glasses, and grabbed his briefcase. Instantly, he reverted to his usual image as the shrewd police chief. When he came downstairs and stood before the three of them, Joanna Gong couldn’t help but feel a wave of fear. She quickly moved next to Shawn Young and nervously asked, “Shawn, d-do you think he’s back to normal?”

“Yeah, he looks totally normal now. Do you think he was just faking all that weird stuff earlier?” Rainie Cheng asked, her face full of doubt.

“Heh—don’t worry, he’s still under my control. You just can’t tell! This is exactly what I want: he acts according to his original personality, but follows my commands. It looks natural, so he won’t slip up!” Shawn Young explained with a grin.

“But what if—what if he gets out of our sight and actually goes back to normal?” Rainie Cheng still looked uneasy.

“Oh, don’t worry, Rainie. I’ve got his soul consciousness locked down with my Mystic Sea Divine Technique. Even if he runs to the ends of the earth—as long as he’s on this planet—I can control his mind. And if you’re worried about him escaping, I can use my Radiant Vision Spell to track him instantly!” Shawn Young said.

“Oh, that’s good! Even if he does escape, as long as we know where he is, we can always catch him again. It’d just take a bit more effort.” Rainie Cheng nodded.

“Howard Kay, now, walk to work from here!” Shawn Young commanded.

“Yes, Master!” Howard Kay replied respectfully. Then he turned and naturally walked out of the villa, heading straight for the police station downtown.

“Uh—Shawn, it’s at least ten kilometers from here to downtown. You’re really making him walk all the way to work?” Joanna Gong asked quickly.

“Heh, yep! Chief Kay’s way too fat, so let’s call it his weight loss plan! Plus, I really don’t want him riding in the car with us—he was just hugging the toilet and singing! He still smells like a bathroom. I’d be suffocated if he came with us!” Shawn Young said, grinning mischievously.

“You’re the worst! So, where are we headed now?” Rainie Cheng asked with a laugh.

“Home,” Shawn Young replied.

“H-home? Your place?” The two women suddenly felt a little nervous, like daughters-in-law meeting the in-laws for the first time.

“Of course! We’re back in Clearview City, so why not go home? My family’s super friendly, and you two aren’t strangers, right? Let’s go!” Shawn Young grabbed both women by the hand and led them out of the villa to Rainie Cheng’s Audi, the one with the dented hood.

The car cruised toward the city center. As they were about to enter downtown, Shawn called home, but no one answered. He realized it was Sunday, so his family was probably helping his mom at the fruit stall. Shawn said to Rainie, “Rainie, head for the First People’s Hospital. My family should be there.”

“Okay, just tell me how to get there,” Rainie Cheng replied.

Shawn gave Rainie directions. Once they entered the city, they turned a few corners and arrived at the bustling street in front of Clearview City First People’s Hospital. Rainie pulled the car into a repair shop at the street entrance for some quick maintenance, then she and Joanna Gong followed Shawn across the street to a row of shops facing the hospital entrance.

Clearview City First People’s Hospital was the biggest and best hospital in town and the whole district. It saw tons of patients every day, so naturally, their families, coworkers, and friends were always coming and going. Over time, a bustling commercial area sprang up around the hospital—restaurants, flower shops, fruit stands, pharmacies, you name it.

Shawn Young’s mother, Linda Young, ran a little fruit stall in the row of shops across from the First People’s Hospital. She’d been at it for nearly ten years, earning enough to put her two kids, Shawn and Sherry, through school and cover the family’s expenses. With her husband Sam Young working at the pharmaceutical factory for less than two bucks a month, life was frugal and a bit tight. Still, the Youngs were a harmonious bunch, living a simple, peaceful life just like countless ordinary folks in China.

Shawn led Rainie Cheng and Joanna Gong toward his mom’s fruit stall. The girls knew they’d be meeting Shawn’s family, so they’d dressed up a bit. Rainie wore a simple sky-blue dress with her long hair down, looking more like a stylish office lady than her usual police uniform. The outfit made her even more stunning—her tall, graceful figure and refined features gave her a mature, confident allure that made Shawn’s eyes light up.

Joanna Gong wore a casual pink T-shirt and black skirt, with pink sneakers that showed off her youthful charm. Her figure was already eye-catching, but even plain clothes made her look dazzling. With her pretty oval face and flawless skin, she was the picture of youthful beauty and allure. She’d always been famous in Clearview City for her looks—back in high school, she was a campus queen, and now in college, she was even more striking!

Since inheriting Elder Thomas’s legacy, Shawn Young had used the Divine Remedy to cleanse his body, unlock his meridians, and cultivated the Celestial Essence from the Codex of Ascension. Thanks to the Dual Harmony Technique, he’d changed a lot in a short time—his acne was gone, and his formerly skinny frame had filled out. His looks had improved dramatically. With his sharp features and newfound confidence, Shawn radiated strength—an aura you only see in truly powerful people. For someone so young to have that kind of presence was rare anywhere in the world, let alone in a small city like Clearview.

With the three of them looking so gorgeous, walking down the busy street, they naturally drew tons of stares. Young guys looked at them with admiration, envy, and even a bit of greed, their eyes glued to Rainie and Joanna. Meanwhile, the girls checked out Shawn, secretly fantasizing about having a guy like him. Shawn couldn’t help but feel proud, pulling Rainie and Joanna closer by the hand, showing off just how close they were—which only made people even more jealous! One poor guy was so distracted watching them that he walked right into a lamppost.

"Thud—" The poor guy fell to the ground, a big red bump swelling on his forehead. He angrily got up and kicked the innocent lamppost, but he kicked too hard and let out a miserable scream, clutching his injured leg. Limping inside the hospital, he became yet another patient at the First People’s Hospital. Now that’s what you call a tragedy.
