Apology and Making Amends
Eugene Warren held the medicine in his hand, watching Belle's puffed-up cheeks as she fumed, finding this little girl truly adorable.
"Thank you, Belle. I'll go deliver the medicine to Madam right away!" Eugene grinned and hurried off with the medicine.
"Pah! Who's your sister? Stop calling me that!" Belle glared fiercely at Eugene and stomped back to her room, still fuming.
Eugene brought the medicine to Arthur Evans’s room. Arthur, while applying medicine to Mrs. Charlotte Evans, teased as he saw Eugene sweating profusely, "Eugene, what mischief are you up to now?"
Eugene chuckled, "Master, it’s nothing. I just ran into Miss Belle in the backyard and played a little joke on her."
Mrs. Charlotte Evans, who had watched Eugene grow up, shot him a look and laughed, "You’ve never been proper since you were a child. I think we ought to find you a wife to keep you in line!"
Eugene quickly waved his hands, "No, no, Mrs. Evans, I’m not getting married! What if I end up with someone as fierce as my mother? Look at how miserable my father is, always under her thumb. I don’t want that!"
Mrs. Charlotte Evans and Arthur Evans exchanged a smile. "With your temperament, you really do need a strong wife to keep you in check!"
Eugene immediately put on a woeful face, announced he was off to pay respects to the Evans family, and slipped out of the room.
"Eugene greets Second Madam, Miss Lily, and Master Jack." Eugene respectfully greeted the three members of the Evans family; outside, he was always reliable and steady.
"You must be Eugene Jr. the steward, right? Uncle Arthur always talks about you and your father, says you’re steady and reliable." Lily saw how thorough and composed Eugene was, clearly a trusted aide of Uncle Arthur.
Eugene smiled modestly, "Miss Lily flatters me. I just do what I can. If you need anything, just ask."
Margaret Evans, who was nearby, smiled and said, "Eugene, you’re too polite. We’re all one family here. If you need anything, just let us know."
Mrs. Silver came out to call for Lily, "Miss Lily, Granny Yin asked you to come over for a moment."
Lily handed Jack to Margaret Evans and followed Mrs. Silver to Granny Yin’s room.
Granny Yin sat cross-legged on the heated brick bed, her face calm. Seeing Lily enter, she patted the spot beside her. "Lily, come, sit."
Lily obediently sat down. Granny Yin took her hand and asked with concern, "I heard you were wronged today. Are you alright?"
Lily smiled and shook her head. "Thank you for your concern, Granny Yin. I’m fine. It’s just a small matter, nothing to worry about."
Granny Yin nodded, pleased. "That’s good. If anyone bullies you, just tell Granny. I’ll stand up for you."
Lily felt warm inside and nodded. "Thank you, Granny Yin."
At this moment, Ernie Lee’s mother rushed in, dragging Ernie Lee behind her. She knelt and kowtowed to Lily, sobbing, "Miss Lily, please forgive my son! He knows he was wrong!"
