If You Dare Deceive Me, I'll Divorce You
After the discussion ended, Lily Evans dismissed Eugene Jr., but she still looked troubled.
Lucky came in from outside, sat down beside Lily, took her hand, and gently touched her furrowed brow. "Wife, why are you unhappy?"
Lily sighed softly, looked up at Lucky, and murmured as if talking to herself, "Tell me, is deception good or bad?"
Lucky's heart skipped a beat. He grabbed Lily's hand, pretending not to understand.
Lily never expected her silly husband to answer such a deep question. She simply leaned into his arms and said softly, "I've always believed that lying is wrong, especially to those close to us. But someone once told me that sometimes, there's such a thing as a 'well-intentioned lie.'"
Lucky felt like a little drum was pounding in his chest. He said nothing, just gently held Lily by the waist and listened to her talk.
"But no matter how necessary a lie is, no matter how good its intentions, strip away the pretty wrapping and it's still a lie. Like when a husband cheats and hides it from his wife to avoid upsetting her—calling it a well-intentioned lie. Isn't that just plain wrong?" Lily gently rubbed Lucky's hand. "The liar thinks they're doing it for someone else's good, but is it really good for the person being lied to?"
Lily sighed again. On one hand, she understood that Eugene Warren had no choice but to lie to his parents; on the other, she disliked being the one deceived.
She talked on for a long time, but Lucky stayed silent, lost in his own thoughts.
At that moment, Lily didn't notice Lucky's unusual silence. She looked up and said, "Lucky, I hate being lied to more than anything, no matter the reason. I don't care for so-called 'well-intentioned lies' when it comes to others, but I can't stand people who think they know what's best. Lucky, you're my husband, so remember—never lie to me about anything, understand?"
Lucky looked at Lily, his gaze flickering. "Wife, I understand."
Only then did Lily break into a smile and give Lucky's nose a playful flick. "Haha, silly Lucky! If you ever try to play tricks or lie to me, I'll divorce you! Come on, let's go see Uncle Arthur—I have something to discuss."
With that, Lily grabbed Lucky's hand and headed toward Uncle Arthur's room in the back courtyard.
All the way there, Lucky stayed silent, watching Lily walk ahead of him.
He never imagined Lily hated lies so much. If she ever found out he'd been pretending to be simple-minded to fool her, would she really leave him?
Alexander Hayes, the fearless general who never blinked in the face of death, suddenly realized he had something to fear for the first time.
Lily dragged Lucky into Uncle Arthur's room, called for Uncle Arthur and Aunt Charlotte, and explained what Eugene Warren had asked. "Eugene Jr. hopes everyone will keep this secret. If his parents, Uncle Arthur, Aunt Charlotte, or I ask about Belle later, please help cover things up."
Uncle Arthur and Aunt Charlotte agreed. "Eugene Jr. is a steady child. This is the best way to handle Belle's situation."
Mrs. Charlotte Evans finished speaking, then took Lily's hand. "Lily, you're still young. Young people always want everything to be clear and perfect. But water that's too clear has no fish—life isn't always black and white. When you've been through more, you'll understand. There's a saying: 'Blessed are the forgetful.' Sometimes, letting things slide is a kind of happiness."
