You Have Wronged Our General
On the way home, Grace's mind was filled with memories of Morgan Jewel from her previous life—so vivid, as if he were right there.
That young man... he was her friend across generations!
He was the most famous Spirit Artificer in the Vermilion Kingdom.
Grace was the most celebrated Spiritual Alchemist in the Vermilion Kingdom.
Both of them belonged to the Spirit Alliance. Maybe it was because they were both from the Blue Moon Kingdom, or maybe their personalities just clicked—they always got along perfectly.
When he learned that she’d been accused of having an affair with the Vermilion Kingdom’s emperor, he rushed to save her without a second thought.
To help her escape, he died at the hands of the royal guards.
Grace could still remember it vividly: arrows piercing his body, blood everywhere, and the way he looked at her with eyes full of final farewell...
Morgan Jewel... I can’t believe I found you so soon. Grace’s eyes grew red again and again, but she couldn’t help smiling with relief.
When she reached the front door, she was surprised to see Louis Lin and Steward Qin waiting there again.
The two of them sat shoulder to shoulder on the curb under a big tree not far from the Zhu Estate gate, looking pitiful—like abandoned servants.
Grace got out of the carriage and walked over. "Hey? What are you two doing here again? Looking for me?"
Both of them stood up, showing off innocent smiles. "Yep!"
"What's up? Don't tell me Evan Xiao gave you some weird order again?"
"No, no!" they said quickly. "Actually, we wanted to ask you to lend us something."
"What is it?"
"It's... your Antler Serpent." Steward Qin's eyes darted around her, finally landing on her pocket.
"You want to borrow my Antler Serpent?" Grace clutched her pocket. "What for?"
"Well, lately, the General has been swamped with work. But because he misses you so much, he can't focus. The paperwork is piling up!" Steward Qin said. "So, we thought maybe your spirit pet could keep him company, ease his longing, and help him get back to work."
"Ha! Misses me?" Grace sneered. "Those girls from the Four Great Houses are sharpening their knives for him! How could he possibly have time for that?"
"Oh, Miss Grace, you’ve really misunderstood our General!" Louis Lin said. "I was there the day the Empress Dowager made her decision. Before you arrived, the General actually tried to refuse the marriage, but the Empress Dowager said if he didn’t accept, it would insult the Emperor and herself—he had no choice but to agree!"
Grace still sneered, "Are you finished? If so, I’m leaving."
"Wait! Miss Grace!" Louis Lin called out. "Um... the Antler Serpent..."
"Nope, not lending it!" Grace turned and went inside.
Louis Lin and Steward Qin watched her walk away, their faces full of sorrow.
Louis Lin: "Do you think His Highness overheard what we just said?"
Steward Qin nodded.
"The paperwork’s already stacked up halfway to the ceiling. If he doesn’t get back to it soon, something’s bound to go wrong." Louis Lin sighed. "Why isn’t he worried at all?"
"Why don’t we just wait here? Maybe he’ll come out soon." Steward Qin stood on tiptoe, peering at the Zhu Estate’s front door.
"Yeah, let’s wait..." Louis Lin stared at the door too.
But after waiting for half an hour, the Antler Serpent still didn’t show up.
They could only leave, heads hanging in disappointment.
......
Grace had just set foot in the house when someone from Dowager Lady Evelyn Zhu’s quarters came with a message, asking her to come over.
Her brows instantly knitted together.
Something bad must have happened.
Because when good things happen, Dowager Lady Evelyn Zhu never calls for her...
