The Black-Robed Man

1/11/2026

Over a hundred mech warriors unleashed their full power, and with divine weapons in hand, the thousands of giant rats stood no chance. In just a quarter of an hour, more than half of them were slaughtered.

Just then—

"Squeak! Squeak! Squeak!"

The shrill cries of rats and the hissing of snakes echoed nonstop. Suddenly, swarms of giant rats and snakes surged in from several tunnels, overwhelming the Plumridge City Special Police.

The shrill cries of rats and the hissing of snakes echoed nonstop. Suddenly, swarms of giant rats and snakes surged in from several tunnels.

"Switch to laser cannons!" Captain Ryan Zhou barked sharply. (Ryan Zhou, captain of the Mech Squad and major institutional backer)

"Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom!"

With a wave of his hand, Ian Song (vice-captain of the Mech Squad and registered Psychic Adept) led the Mech Squad up onto the stairs, slashing down the giant snakes and rats that leapt at them.

There were so many giant snakes and rats that aiming was pointless.

"Careful, Zhou! Giant rats are coming from the tunnel behind you!" came Harvey Zhang’s warning through the communicator. (Harvey Zhang, chief of the Plumridge City Special Police)

But almost immediately, more giant rats and snakes poured in from the tunnels, filling the hall again.

"Keep firing!"

"Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom!"

After several rounds of laser cannon fire, the giant rats and snakes finally realized the danger and retreated from the hall, escaping back into the tunnels as the Plumridge City Special Police pressed their advantage.

"Advance!"

With a wave of Captain Ryan Zhou’s hand, the team entered a tunnel and soon arrived at the hall where the swords and sabers had been stored earlier.

This hall was free of giant rats and snakes, so the Plumridge City Special Police pressed on again, and finally reached the vast chamber.

Seeing the dense swarms of snakes and rats inside, the Plumridge City Special Police couldn’t help showing fear.

"Open fire!"

At Ryan Zhou’s order, a hundred mech warriors lined up at the foot of the stairs and opened fire one after another.

"Boom! Boom! Boom!"

Explosions thundered nonstop as giant snakes and rats were blasted into chunks of meat by the laser cannons.

"Hiss!"

Two Plumridge City Special Police officers guarding the site barked the order at the black-robed man.

Both the Snake King and Rat King roared in fury, and instantly, masses of giant snakes and rats charged in packs up toward the passage.

The black-robed man sneered and swung his sword. Instantly, the heads of both Plumridge City Special Police officers flew high into the air.

"Yes, sir!"

The other Plumridge City Special Police officers immediately opened fire.

The explosions from the laser cannons kept coming, killing swarms of giant rats and snakes. But there were simply too many in this chamber—after a quarter of an hour, only about a tenth had been killed.

"Careful, Zhou! Giant rats are coming from the tunnel behind you!" came Harvey Zhang’s warning through the communicator.

Ryan Zhou’s face darkened, and he quickly ordered ten mech warriors to turn their guns and face the rear.

Sure enough, less than ten seconds later, real "Squeak! Squeak! Squeak!" noises came from behind—a massive horde of giant rats had circled around through another tunnel.

Attacked from both front and rear!

The Plumridge City Special Police officers were horrified by what they saw.

The Snake King let out another piercing screech. Suddenly, hundreds of emerald-green little snakes shot out from the swarm like lightning, darting toward the crowd, followed by thousands of giant snakes over twenty meters long surging after them.

The black-robed man swung his sword again, and dozens of thin sword beams instantly pierced through the heads of dozens of Plumridge City Special Police officers.

Watching the Plumridge City Special Police officers drop dead one after another, the black-robed man wore a look of twisted satisfaction.

If they weren’t wearing mechs, being hit by that venom would mean certain death or serious injury. But with their armor, the liquid only stained their suits with color.

"Slash!"

A flash of sword light—Ian Song’s single strike sliced dozens of emerald snakes clean in half.

"Boom! Boom!"

At once, five mech warriors and over a hundred Plumridge City Special Police officers charged toward the black-robed man.

"Thud! Thud! Thud!"

"Bang! Bang! Bang!"

The Mech Squad swung their swords at the snakes’ heads. Though they managed to decapitate more than a dozen, the rest slammed into them, scattering their formation.

"Hmph!"

Only Ian Song remained unmoved. He gave a cold snort and uttered a series of strange syllables. Instantly, the fifty or so remaining giant snakes were hypnotized. They turned around and began attacking the other snakes.

Above the palace, Harvey Zhang stared at the video feed from below, his mouth agape in shock—a mere one-star Psychic Adept could hypnotize over fifty giant snakes at once? That seemed almost unbelievable.

Ryan Zhou shouted praise: "Well done, Lu!"

With those fifty snakes hypnotized, the battle stabilized again. But more and more giant rats kept pouring in.

Ryan Zhou made a snap decision.

"Everyone fall back to the stairs and blow up the tunnel!"

With more than ten tunnels, blowing up one wouldn’t matter.

"Boom! Boom!"

Under the barrage of laser cannon fire, the tunnel behind them collapsed, and for the moment, they no longer had to fight on two fronts.

Above the underground palace, everyone watched the battle below with tense anticipation.

Suddenly, a black-robed man appeared around the edge of the site.

His gaze seemed to pierce through layers of empty space into the underground palace. Muttering to himself, he said, "Who would have thought there’d be an S-class treasure here!"

Inside the palace, Ian Song’s brow furrowed—he sensed a system host had appeared nearby.

"Did he detect the presence of the Evolution Divine Pearl?"

The system could grant its host all sorts of skills and powers, so it wasn’t surprising that a host could detect the Evolution Divine Pearl’s presence.

With a thought, Ian Song activated his Clairvoyance ability and looked outside the palace. Sure enough, he spotted a black-robed man with a sinister expression at the edge of the construction site.

"Who are you? This site is sealed off—leave immediately!"

Two SWAT officers guarding the site barked the order at the black-robed man.

"Insects like you aren’t even worthy to speak to me!"

The black-robed man sneered and swung his sword. Instantly, the heads of both SWAT officers flew high into the air.

"Enemy attack!"

The other SWAT officers immediately opened fire.

Laser guns fired at a blistering rate—three shots per second—so in a flash, hundreds of beams shot toward the black-robed man.

"Heh."

With a soft chuckle, the black-robed man didn’t even bother to dodge.

Strangely, the lasers broke apart when they got within a meter of his body.

"How... how is that possible?"

The SWAT officers were horrified by what they saw.

"Die, insects!"

The black-robed man swung his sword again, and dozens of thin sword beams instantly pierced through the heads of dozens of SWAT officers.

Watching the SWAT officers drop dead one after another, the black-robed man wore a look of twisted satisfaction.

"Death... is the most wonderful thing!"

"What’s going on?"

Harvey Zhang had already noticed the commotion!

"Damn, someone’s broken into the site—quick, capture him!" Yunhai shouted.

At once, five mech warriors and over a hundred SWAT officers charged toward the black-robed man.

But the black-robed man didn’t look worried at all. He strolled forward, his demeanor as casual as if he were out for a walk.
