Nightshade Siege

12/2/2025

The battle raged on. Thanks to successful intelligence work, the remaining Japanese forces hiding in Nanning City were tracked down. The Southern Military District’s special forces and armed police launched a joint operation, splitting into two teams and swiftly converging on the targeted hotel apartment.

Inside an abandoned underground air-raid shelter leading to the seaside at Mount Raveneye, a large container truck sat outside, camouflaged with leaves and branches. More than twenty heavily armed mercenaries hid inside the shelter. Among them, a skinny white man was setting up a portable radar and operating an advanced signal receiver, nervously searching for electronic signals from the military base in Mount Raveneye on his laptop.

Inside an abandoned underground air-raid shelter leading to the seaside at Dongyao Mountain, a large container truck sat outside, camouflaged with leaves and branches. More than twenty heavily armed mercenaries hid inside the shelter. Among them, a skinny white man was setting up a portable radar and operating an advanced signal receiver, nervously searching for electronic signals from the military base in Dongyao Mountain on his laptop.

"Black Fox, what's the situation? Have you made contact with the Japanese yet?" asked a tall, grim-faced middle-aged man in jungle camouflage, with brown curly hair. This was none other than Frank Falk, the infamous leader of the Nightshade Mercenary Corps.

"Boss, all signals have been cut off. Based on my analysis—the Japanese are probably finished!" said Black Fox, his face clouded with worry.

"Ugh—damn it! Those arrogant Japanese really think this is their turf! Black Fox, try again to reach them. If it doesn’t work, we’re out of here in minutes—this job’s a total loss," Frank Falk growled.

No sooner had he finished speaking than gunfire erupted outside. A mercenary with his face smeared in camouflage paint burst into the shelter, panting and yelling, "Bad news—we’ve been exposed! There are tons of mainland armed police and Dragonsquad special forces outside. They’ve surrounded us, using sheer numbers! We’ve only got twenty-something people. If we don’t break out now, we’re toast!"

"Ah! Damn it! Did we get reverse-tracked?" Frank Falk grabbed his night vision goggles and rushed outside. Through the lens, he saw the Chinese armed police closing in. Seven or eight Shade Squad mercenaries, tasked with perimeter defense, were fiercely exchanging fire with the fast-response units.

Both sides were elite forces, and the fight quickly became a stalemate. But with his wealth of combat experience, Frank Falk realized the Dragonsquad wasn’t rushing to attack. Instead, they were playing it safe, waiting for the mercenaries to run out of ammo before joining the armed police in a human wave assault to finish them off.

A nearby mercenary glanced at Frank Falk's grim face and cautiously asked, "Boss... are they planning to capture us alive?"

Frank Falk replied coldly, "We're mercenaries who risk our lives for money, just like spies. The Geneva Convention doesn't protect us—they'll just kill us all! Even if they catch us, it's a death sentence. Our only option is to break out!"

"How do we break out? It looks like they've already surrounded us—we're trapped—" the mercenary said, his voice trembling slightly.

"I'll have Black Fox try to contact the Japanese again, see if they've got a way to get us out," Frank Falk said. He knew things were dire, but couldn't think of a better plan.

"Boss, I... I just got through to the Japanese support team, but they said the situation's changed. The Chinese anti-submarine ships are searching the coast, so their submarine can't make it. There's really no way—unless..." Black Fox called out urgently, but hesitated at the end.

"Unless what? What trick are those damned Japanese up to now?" Frank Falk asked, frowning.

"Unless we can reach the bay. They've got someone waiting with a speedboat. If we make it to the mouth of the bay, no matter how tough the mainland troops are, they can't catch up to the Japanese custom high-powered airboats!" Black Fox explained.

"Damn those Japanese! It's thirty kilometers to North Bay from here! Even if we break out, that's thirty kilometers of tight security! How are we supposed to get there?! Those Japanese bastards must be joking!" Frank Falk cursed angrily.

"Boss... it's not impossible. I checked the satellite map. Not far from this abandoned underground bunker, there's a stretch of mountain terrain—dense subtropical jungle. If we get through that, the bay isn't far. We've still got a shot," Black Fox said quietly.

Frank Falk thought for a moment, then gritted his teeth and said, "Alright! We'll take that route! We're all experts in jungle and mountain warfare—the mainland police don't stand a chance against us. We'll just have to fight the Chinese Special Ops team in the jungle. They have the numbers, but this is our only way out! Tell everyone to drop anything useless, keep only weapons and ammo! Gather here—snipers and gunners cover our retreat. We're pulling out!"

Black Fox relayed Frank Falk's orders to the dozen or so mercenaries under 'Nightshade.' The twenty-plus mercenaries scattered around immediately sprang into action. In less than a minute, they'd gathered around Frank. He addressed them, "Alright, you guys have plenty of combat experience, so I won't waste words. Work together—when we break out, unleash everything you've got. Survive five minutes and it's jungle warfare! Once we get through the jungle, we can leave this hellhole behind!"

The mercenaries nodded. They were all jungle and mountain warfare specialists—once they entered the forest, it would be their domain, and their chances of escaping alive would soar.

At that moment, the Dragon God Special Ops team and the police launched another attack. Bullets whizzed by. Frank Falk waved Black Fox over, handed him a P5, then led the mercenaries into the container behind a parked semi truck. They opened the thick iron doors halfway for cover.

Frank Falk dashed to the cab, started the engine, and floored the gas pedal. The container truck barreled onto the highway, smashing through barricades, then took a sharp turn up the road. But just as it hit the highway, the truck's tires were spiked by police roadblocks.

The police guarding the perimeter didn't expect the mercenaries to be so ruthless, daring to break through hundreds of officers surrounding them!

Frank Falk wasn't surprised. He kept driving the truck, even as the tires leaked air. In the container, the mercenaries unleashed a barrage of gunfire at the perimeter, followed by over a hundred grenades!

Boom... Boom... Boom... More than a hundred grenades exploded in succession, turning both sides of the highway into a sea of fire. The police officers who rushed to intercept the truck were wounded by the intense breakout.

Despite the blown tires, Frank Falk managed to drive the battered truck about two kilometers before the police closed in again. He led the mercenaries as they jumped out and fled up the hillside by the road.

The mercenaries rushed into the woods on the hillside. Frank Falk grabbed the wiry Black Fox and, along with a gunner, stayed behind to cover the retreat. Nearby, the police closed in again, launching a massive search through the mountains.
