"Hello? Who's this?"
Evan Lin hadn't changed his phone number, but the number calling him now had no name saved.
And it wasn't a cell phone—it was a landline number.
"Evan?"
A voice on the other end called out, sounding a bit uncertain.
"Hank Chu?"
Hearing that familiar voice, Evan quickly realized who it was. He grabbed his phone, sat down on the couch by the window, and laughed: "Not bad, man. Ever since you started college, you haven't called me once. I've tried reaching you a few times but never got through. What made you think of me today?"
Evan and Hank Chu had been friends since childhood, so Evan knew his personality well.
Unlike Ken Feng, Hank always struck Evan as more steady and mature.
Maybe it was because their families were so similar growing up, but Evan and Hank had always been closest.
Back then, Hank Chu had a crush on Amelia Jiao. But because Hank only got into a second-tier university, Amelia decided he had no real future and cut him off completely.
Hank was stubborn. With Evan's connections, he could have easily won Amelia over, but in the end he chose to draw a clear line and sever ties, even though it hurt.
"So... I wanted to ask, could you... could you lend me some money?"
Hank lowered his voice, sounding worried and unsure.
"Sure. How much?"
Evan nodded.
"Ten thousand, I guess."
Hank sounded unsure.
"Okay, I'll transfer the money to you in a bit. Where are you right now? I'm free these days, so I'll come find you, grab a meal, and catch up."
Evan could tell Hank was hinting at something more.
When it came to childhood friends, Evan always helped however he could.
Ken Feng, for example, had bounced back after his heartbreak and was now full of energy again.
And Evan understood Hank's character.
If it wasn't absolutely necessary, Hank would never ask Evan to borrow money.
That's just how he was.
If he was calling Evan to borrow money now, things must really be desperate.
"Alright, I'm at North Hill University of Science and Technology. Call me when you get here—I'm still using the same phone number."
Hank said.
"Why'd you call me from a landline instead of your cell?" Evan asked.
"My cell's busted. I need to get a new one later. Anyway, that's it for now—call me when you get here."
