Posing in the Wilderness

1/11/2026

That night, Ian Song camped at the foot of a small mountain, two thousand kilometers outside the Jade Maiden Sect.

Bright yellow flames cast a glow over his slightly youthful, handsome face. In his hand he held a branch, skewered with a fat, glistening mountain pheasant roasting over the fire. The rich aroma of meat drifted far into the night breeze.

Thinking about it, it had been a long time since he'd enjoyed barbecue.

Several dozen kilometers away—

—a deadly chase was underway.

The ones being hunted were a pair of young man and woman, both looking grief-stricken and indignant. Their pursuer was a middle-aged man whose eyes gleamed with shadowy malice.

Watching the fleeing pair ahead, the middle-aged man wore a cat-and-mouse grin and called out loudly, "Liam, Wendy, you can't escape! If you obediently surrender and hand over our Lin Clan's supreme treasure, your second uncle Samuel Lin promises not to take your lives—how about it?"

"Dream on! Even if I die, I'll never surrender to a Lin Clan traitor like you, Samuel Lin!"

The young man, Liam Lin, shouted back in anger.

The middle-aged man curled his lip dismissively. "Liam, how can you say that? Your second uncle is doing this for the Lin Clan's good!"

"For the Lin Clan's good? You brought the Huang family to kill my father!" Liam's anger only grew, his eyes full of murderous intent. If he had the strength, he would have torn this traitor to pieces.

The middle-aged man replied, "That's not fair. The real problem is your stubborn old father—if he'd agreed to marry Wendy into the Huang family, none of this would have happened!"

"How could my father ever marry Wendy to Howard Huang, that useless playboy!"

The middle-aged man sneered, "What's wrong with marrying Howard Huang? Sure, he's a wastrel, but he's the Huang clan head's son. Besides, his big brother Hank Huang is already a seed disciple of the Four Beasts Sect and might even become the sect master one day. With Hank's support, the Huang family will dominate Sanyang Town—who could stand against them? So instead of being destroyed by them in the future, we should cling to them now. The Lin Clan could become glorious and prosperous."

"If you want to be the Huang family's dog, go ahead—but we won't!"

Samuel Lin's face darkened with killing intent. He snapped, "Liam, you're just as stubborn as your father! Don't test your second uncle's patience, or I'll really have to get ruthless!"

"Men of the Lin Clan aren't afraid to die!" Liam Lin shouted.

"If you're not afraid to die, why are you running?" Samuel Lin sneered.

"Hmph, want revenge? Try again in your next life!"

Samuel Lin barked coldly, suddenly doubling his speed and closing the distance in an instant.

Seeing this, Liam Lin was shocked. He drew a black tiger-head saber, stamped his foot, and charged at Samuel Lin with a flying slash.

"Roar!"

As the saber swung, a tiger's roar echoed. In the air, the vague shadow of a giant striped tiger appeared, pouncing toward Samuel Lin.

"Liam, I have to admit, you're a cultivation genius—just eighteen and already at the tenth level of Qi-Refining. Unfortunately, you forgot your second uncle is at the Foundation Establishment Realm!"

As he spoke, Samuel Lin produced a longsword and unleashed several consecutive strikes.

Sword-qi surged out like a tide, colliding with the tiger phantom in the air, instantly shattering it. The sword-qi didn't weaken, continuing to shoot toward Liam Lin.

Seeing this, Liam Lin tensed, shoved Wendy Lin aside, and shouted, "Wendy, go ahead!"

As he spoke, Liam Lin swung his tiger-head saber, unleashing slash after slash.

Wendy Lin hesitated for a moment, then sped forward, knowing that staying would only drag her brother down.

Clang! Clang! Clang!

A series of clashes rang out, and Liam Lin staggered back dozens of steps before barely steadying himself.

Samuel Lin didn't press the attack. Instead, he said playfully, "Well? No matter how talented you are, you're still no match for your second uncle. I'll ask you one more time—will you surrender?"

Liam Lin spat on the ground and sneered, "Pah! Dream on if you think I'll surrender to a Huang family lapdog like you!"

"Fine, you little brat! If you want to die, I'll grant your wish!"

With a cold shout, Samuel Lin's figure blurred as he appeared before Liam Lin, his sword unleashing a storm of attacks.

Clang! Clang! Clang! Clang!!

Liam Lin met the attack with his saber but could only block a dozen blows before the sword struck his body.

Bang!

The next moment, Liam Lin's body was sent flying, crashing heavily to the ground as he spat out a mouthful of blood.

Whoosh! Whoosh!

Samuel Lin flashed over and appeared right in front of Liam, pressing his sword to Liam's neck. "Hand over my Lin family's supreme treasure, and I'll spare your life!"

"Dream on! If you've got the guts, kill me!" Liam glared at him, completely unafraid.

"Stubborn brat!"

Samuel Lin flicked his sword, hooking Liam's storage pouch from his waist.

Clatter!

He dumped out everything from the storage pouch, but found nothing he wanted. Samuel's face darkened, growing even more sinister.

"Tell me, where did my Lin family's supreme treasure go?"

Samuel pressed him again, demanding an answer.

Liam just sneered, refusing to say a word.

"You really think I don't know? Is the supreme treasure with Wendy Lin?" Samuel stared hard at Liam, pressing him for the truth.

Sure enough, Liam's face changed, and he blurted out anxiously, "The treasure isn't with Wendy! Don't waste your time!"

"Ha! So my Lin family's supreme treasure really is with Wendy!" Samuel laughed triumphantly.

"No, that's not true! You're wrong, the treasure isn't with Wendy!" Liam shouted, suddenly leaping up and swinging a fist at Samuel's head.

"Courting death!"

With a flash of swordlight, Samuel's blade stabbed straight into Liam's heart. He pulled out the sword and dashed off in the direction Wendy had fled.

Once Samuel was gone, Liam—who'd seemed dead—suddenly stood up, clutching his chest and sneering coldly. "Killing me isn't so easy. Too bad Wendy has to be my scapegoat now. Wendy, I didn't want this, but I can't die, or the Lin Clan will truly be finished. But don't worry, once I've cultivated enough, I'll kill Samuel and avenge you and our father!"

As soon as he finished speaking, Liam turned and fled in the opposite direction.
