No Different Than Family

"Village chief, me?" Zhang Mu was taken aback, clearly surprised.

Both Wu Caiwei and Zhang Mu knew that Su Li had the right to recommend the village chief.

Zhang Mu, being a man, naturally had ambitions to achieve something great and also wanted to be the village chief. But after discussing with Wu Caiwei, they both knew Su Li must have her own plans. If they forced Su Li to recommend Zhang Mu just because of their good relationship, it would put her in a difficult position.

So from beginning to end, many villagers went to Su Li, even Third Aunt Sun sought her out, but Zhang Mu and Wu Caiwei never brought up the matter to Su Li themselves, fearing it would be hard for her.

Zhang Mu and Wu Caiwei thought Su Li would probably keep the village chief position for her own family, like Su Sanyun or Yuanbao, or even Su Shirong. Unexpectedly, Su Li actually approached Zhang Mu.

Seeing Zhang Mu’s surprised and shocked expression, Su Li naturally knew why her close friends hadn’t asked her to be village chief.

Because Zhang Mu and Wu Caiwei were so considerate of her difficulties, Su Li felt that both officially and personally, Zhang Mu was very suitable to be the village chief.

"Brother Zhang Mu, I think you are very suitable to be the village chief," Su Li smiled. "First, you are steady and fair in handling matters, so if you become village chief, you will gain everyone’s respect. Second, your family is wealthy but not greedy, so you won’t lose fairness over small favors when making decisions. Third, you are in your prime, perfect for undertaking a big task, and being village chief will support you. Fourth, I have a selfish reason: I want the village chief to be one of our own, not letting outsiders benefit. My Fourth Uncle is the most qualified by seniority and ability, but unfortunately his household registration isn’t here. Third Uncle is too honest and can’t handle the job. Shirong has improved a lot in business but is too young; no one would listen to a greenhorn village chief. As for Yuanbao, everyone sees him as a fool; how can a fool be village chief? You and my family’s Yuanbao are good brothers, and Caiwei and I are close sisters. Though we’re not blood relatives, our relationship is like family. I want you to be village chief here; it makes me feel at ease."

Zhang Mu was both moved and fired up by Su Li’s words, not knowing what to say except excitedly, "A Li, don’t worry, if I become village chief, I’ll do my best!"

Su Li smiled, "I’ve always believed in your abilities, Brother Zhang Mu. Since you have no objection to being village chief, I’ll recommend you to the village head. Once the village head discusses it with other village heads and reports to the government office, official documents will come down, and you’ll be the village chief. From now on, please take good care of the village as the chief!"

Zhang Mu laughed heartily, "Wow, I never thought I’d snag an official title! I’ll tell Caiwei; she’ll be thrilled!"

"Of course, Caiwei will be the village chief’s wife," Su Li said with a smile.

Zhang Mu was overjoyed and happily saw Su Li off. That night, when he got home and saw Wu Caiwei holding Little Clown feeding the baby, he immediately rushed in.

Wu Caiwei blushed and turned away, "I’m feeding our son. Don’t stare at me, look somewhere else."

Zhang Mu helped Wu Caiwei hold their son and laughed, "My wife is so beautiful, I love looking at her and can never get enough! Honey, I have good news: you’re about to become the village chief’s wife!"

"What!? Village chief’s wife!?" Wu Caiwei didn’t show surprise but instead looked serious and grabbed Zhang Mu’s arm, saying, "Brother Zhang Mu, did you go see A Li? Su Li can recommend whoever she wants for village chief, but we mustn’t make things difficult for her."
