No One Else to Blame
Lily Evans scoffed, glancing at Sophie White. "Originally, the Prince and I planned to find the right moment to reveal the truth and clear the White Family's name..."
Sophie White’s heart trembled at Lily Evans’s words. She gripped the wooden railing tightly and demanded, "What—what exactly do you mean!?"
Lily Evans smiled faintly. "But now, looking at you, I’ve changed my mind. The White Family may have sacrificed for the Kingdom of Jin, but it’s a shame they produced a daughter as heartless and insane as you—one who murdered dozens of innocent children of Jin. It’s unforgivable. Sophie White, listen carefully: because of your inhuman actions, you’ve erased all the White Family’s contributions. They sacrificed much for the Kingdom of Jin, but you killed even more innocent children! Because of you, all the loyalty and merit of the White Family has been wiped away! Every drop of blood on your hands stains your ancestors; every innocent life you took will be counted against the White Family."
Lily Evans paused, then looked earnestly at Sophie White. "Sophie White, listen closely: because of you, the White Family’s case will never be overturned; because of you, your ancestors will forever bear the name of traitors, never able to clear their reputation. And your actions have made the people of Jin despise and hate the White Family even more. Do you know what the people outside are saying now?"
Sophie White’s body trembled uncontrollably, her lips turning blue, her eyes losing focus.
Lily Evans continued, "The people of Jin say that the entire White Family are monsters to the core. Only monsters could give birth to a daughter as vicious as you, Sophie White! If not for you, the Prince would have overturned the White Family’s case within three years, making them honored martyrs. But now, they’ve become the devils everyone in Jin spits on! Sophie White, you erased your ancestors’ achievements, you shamed your forebears—are you happy now? Are you satisfied? Hmm?"
Every word from Lily Evans was like an invisible steel nail, hammering into Sophie White’s bones, making her shiver uncontrollably.
Scenes of her family’s tragic deaths flashed through Sophie White’s mind, and she remembered curling up in her father’s arms.
Sophie White recalled the vow she made after Alexander Hayes rescued her that year: she swore she would clear her family’s name!
The greatest meaning and wish in Sophie White’s life was to let the world know the White Family were not traitors.
But now, everything they had planned was ruined.
Sophie White suddenly looked up, her eyes bloodshot, glaring venomously at Lily Evans. "It's all because of you, all because of you! If it weren't for you, witch, I would never have gone down this path of no return!"
"Things have come to this, and you still don't think you're at fault? You actually push all the blame onto me?" Lily Evans looked at Sophie White, shaking her head. "You really are a cruel woman."
After speaking, Lily Evans looked at Sophie White with disappointment, then turned and walked out.
After a few steps, Sophie White suddenly shouted, "Stop right there!"
Lily Evans stopped, frowned, and looked back.
Sophie White slowly knelt on the ground, pleading with Lily Evans, "I'm begging you—even if you hate me, it doesn't matter, but please, you must ask the Prince to clear my family's name!"
Lily Evans sighed, looking seriously at Sophie White. "Sophie White, think carefully. You killed so many children, shattered so many families. Even if your family's case is overturned, do you think the people of Jin will stop cursing the White Family? The only difference is, the crime changes from traitor to murderer. Sophie White, this is a crime you placed on your family with your own hands—no one else is to blame."
