Guess Who I Am
On the paper, Su Li wrote concisely and clearly:
First, fill the five-jin wine jar from the wine pool, then pour it into the six-jin wine jar. Fill the five-jin jar again and continue pouring into the six-jin jar until the six-jin jar is full. At this point, the five-jin jar has four jin left. Pour all the wine from the six-jin jar back into the wine pool, then pour the remaining four jin from the five-jin jar into the empty six-jin jar. Now the six-jin jar contains only four jin. Fill the five-jin jar again from the wine pool, then pour into the six-jin jar until it is full. The five-jin jar will have three jin left, which can be sold to customers.
Mr. Zhuge read Su Li's solution many times, mentally simulating the process, and found it indeed worked as Su Li described. This way, three jin of wine could be sold separately!
"This method is brilliant!" Mr. Zhuge slapped his thigh, clearly still fascinated by the problem.
"I've solved both problems, please fulfill your promise, Mr. Zhuge," Su Li smiled.
Mr. Zhuge nodded while looking at the answers: "I naturally won't go back on my word. Su Lady, please wait a few days, and I will send a suitable teacher to your village."
Su Li cupped her hands and smiled: "Thank you very much, sir."
Mr. Zhuge was so excited he ignored everything else, staring at the paper, feeling the answers were simply ingenious.
Suddenly, an elderly man who had been silent for a long time in the back room spoke anxiously: "Zhuge, did this young lady really solve the second problem as well?"
Mr. Zhuge turned and said: "Yes, teacher, she solved it. It's concise and skillful, absolutely flawless!"
The elderly man's voice grew more urgent: "Quickly bring the answer in, let me have a look!"
Mr. Zhuge stood up, holding the two sheets Su Li had written, and walked into the room. The door was slightly ajar, Su Li instinctively peeked inside, wanting to see what the elderly man looked like, but Mr. Zhuge's wide robe blocked her view.
After Mr. Zhuge entered, he immediately closed the door.
Su Li and Li Yanhao exchanged glances, not knowing what mischief they were up to.
Inside, they heard Mr. Zhuge moving about, then low voices talking and the sound of paper rustling, followed by the mysterious elderly man's sigh: "So this is how the wine jar problem is solved... truly ingenious!"
Su Li stuck out her tongue; that problem posed by Mr. Zhuge's teacher—seems even he didn't know the answer!
The mysterious elderly man inside suddenly spoke to Su Li: "Young lady, you are very clever. Now, I will ask you another question. If you can answer it, I will also help you build a school in your village. How about that?"
Su Li immediately became interested. If Mr. Zhuge was so impressive, his teacher must be even more so. With such help, Haizi Village's school would have no worries!
So Su Li decisively said, "Please, sir, ask your question. I will do my best to answer."
The elderly man's voice carried a smile: "Truly clever and decisive, no beating around the bush. Very good! Since you are so smart, can you guess who I am?"
"Your identity, sir?" Su Li frowned, deep in thought.
Li Yanhao whispered beside her, "A Li, do you really want to answer? You know nothing about Mr. Zhuge, and even I don't know who his teacher is. There are so many people in this world, how could you possibly guess?"
Su Li lowered her head, suddenly a flash of insight struck her mind: "I know who you are, sir!"
