Transplant

"Speak." William Wang Jinling took a deep breath and steadied himself.

Caleb Wang's eyes didn't blink; he stared intently at Serena Feng, his gaze burning with intensity.

Serena Feng had seen this kind of look and attitude countless times before; it didn't faze her in the slightest.

Handsome men, nobles—it didn't matter. If they wanted her medical skills, then tigers had to bow and dragons had to coil before her.

Ahem... Of course, once the illness was cured, they'd have nothing left to beg for. But could they guarantee that they'd never fall ill again, or that their loved ones would never need her help?

Doctors are respected because, when you're suffering, only a doctor can save you. And no one can ever say they'll never need a doctor.

Of course, that's only true if your skills are unmatched—irreplaceable. That's exactly what Serena Feng was striving for: to become a doctor no one could replace.

Glancing at William Wang Jinling and Caleb Wang, Serena considered for a moment, then decided to reveal some medical knowledge from her own era—things unheard of in this world.

"I'll tell you, but you must swear that what I say today will never leave this room—no one else can know. And no matter how shocking or unbelievable my words sound, you can't panic. Whatever I say, you can only accept. Remember, I'm a physician, and when it comes to treating your eyes, I'm the absolute authority here."

As she spoke, Serena Feng radiated an undeniable air of authority. This was the presence of someone truly confident; she had the conviction, and it showed.

William Wang Jinling and Caleb Wang were silent for a moment, then nodded solemnly.

"Agreed." Serena Feng had managed to treat an eye disease that had stumped all the famous doctors, so it was understandable if her words sounded a bit unbelievable.

"Then, I ask you to swear: if you break this oath, disaster will fall upon your descendants." Serena Feng knew that in this era, people took oaths very seriously—once they swore, they would keep their word.

Besides, she knew the character of the Wang brothers well; neither of them were the type to gossip.

"Very well. I, William Wang Jinling (Caleb Wang Jinhan), swear never to reveal a single word Serena Feng says today. If I break this oath, may lightning strike me and disaster befall my descendants."

The Wang brothers couldn't help feeling a sense of anticipation—just how astonishing would Serena Feng's words turn out to be?

Now that she'd gotten what she wanted, Serena Feng nodded in satisfaction. Ignoring the brothers' impatience, she made sure to explain her treatment plan in terms they could understand.

Serena Feng spoke at length, but in the end, it all boiled down to one thing: "Corneal transplant."

"Serena Feng, this—how, how is this possible? How could such a thing be done?" The Wang brothers' expressions changed instantly.

Serena Feng's words really were earth-shattering—even for them, it was hard to accept at first.

"What's impossible about it? Just because others can't do it doesn't mean I, Serena Feng, can't. Remember, I am Serena Feng—the only one who can cure your eyes. What I say, I will accomplish." Her words sounded arrogant, but her expression was utterly calm, as if it was only natural.

"But we really can't understand how this could possibly cure anything." Caleb Wang finally snapped out of his shock.

"You're not doctors, so it's normal you don't understand. All you need to know is that this treatment can restore the First Young Master's sight." Serena Feng was ninety percent confident in this.

In any world, nobles have privileges. For ordinary people, a cornea is precious, but to the Wang Clan, it's something they can easily obtain.

The Wang brothers were stunned, falling silent as they slowly processed Serena Feng's words. After a quarter of an hour, Caleb Wang finally asked in a low voice, "So what exactly is a cornea?"

Although Serena Feng tried to use language from this world, some terms were simply beyond William Wang Jinling and Caleb Wang.

"It's a very important part of your eye. With it, you can see." Serena Feng didn't want to over-explain—sometimes, the more you say, the less clear it becomes.

"And what about 'transplant'?" William Wang Jinling was more concerned about those two words.

Just hearing those words gave him a bad feeling.

Serena Feng smiled, crossing her arms, her whole demeanor radiating a cold indifference and detachment.

"A transplant means taking the cornea from someone else's eye and grafting it into yours."

"Is that even possible?" Caleb Wang was utterly shocked.

"I can't accept that. It would mean someone else loses their sight." William Wang Jinling refused without hesitation.

As the First Young Master of the Wang Clan, it would be easy for him to take not just a pair of eyes, but even a life—but this sort of thing...

His conscience couldn't bear it.

"Of course it's possible," Serena Feng answered Caleb Wang first, then turned to William Wang Jinling: "But you don't need to worry about that. I would never harvest from a living person—that's my principle and my ethics as a doctor.

Otherwise, if I cured your eyes but made someone else blind, what would be the point? A doctor's duty isn't to transfer suffering from one person to another, but to eliminate it completely."

The cornea can be taken after death—ideally within half an hour. Others might not be able to manage that, but I think the Wang estate can. After all, there are plenty of death-row prisoners; convincing one to donate their corneas to the Wang Clan wouldn't be difficult.

The cornea is just a tiny, transparent layer in the eye; it won't affect the deceased's appearance, nor will it harm their body.

I'm not worried about sourcing corneas. In the Dongling Dynasty, there are always condemned criminals. With the Wang Clan's resources, obtaining a pair of corneas from an executed prisoner is no problem. What concerns me is you, Young Master Wang—can you accept having someone else's cornea in your eyes?"

Some might think Serena Feng was cold-blooded for even using the dead, but it was still far better than harvesting from the living.

Serena Feng couldn't control the fate of condemned criminals, nor was she dissecting their bodies—she was only taking a pair of corneas.

For a doctor, this was a way to benefit the living. Whether others could accept it was beyond her responsibility.

She'd said everything she needed to say. Serena trusted the Wang brothers wouldn't leak her plan—and even if they did, so what? She'd just deny it.

Of course, she would have the Wang estate obtain the donor's consent; as for their methods, that was none of her concern.

Her only requirements were: never harvest from the living, and never target the innocent.

Anyone sentenced to death was no kind soul—she had no qualms about using them.

Sure enough, Serena Feng's words left William Wang Jinling in silent turmoil.

The thought of putting a dead person's cornea in his own eyes was something he truly couldn't accept.

"Couldn't you use a living donor?" Caleb Wang understood his brother's feelings. Honestly, he couldn't accept having something from a dead person in his own eyes either—it felt terribly unlucky.

Using a living person would be easier to accept—and you could even choose someone you liked. It was just a pair of eyes, and the Wang estate certainly had the means.

If the Wang estate wanted it, a hundred or a thousand pairs of eyes would be no problem.

"Absolutely not." Serena Feng didn't bother to explain—her refusal was absolute.

She was a doctor, not a butcher. She would never harvest organs from the living.

After shooting Caleb Wang a glare, Serena Feng turned back to William Wang Jinling. "Young Master, you really don't need to worry. If someone can help others after death, that's a blessing for them. Although I'm taking the cornea from the dead, within half an hour it's still 'alive'—otherwise, I wouldn't use it, would I?"

"I understand, it's just..." It was so hard to accept.

William Wang Jinling was locked in an agonizing inner conflict.
